DF Gameplay Questions / Re: List of Vampire Facts
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:47:22 am »
After scratching my head in confusion attempting to locate my newly promoted Militia Captain, I replaced him with the second most qualified candidate.
The initial Captain turned up drained of blood in his bedroom. And after a detailed investigation I discovered the identity of his vampire assailant. (I ended up using the memorial trick).

The Vampire was none other than the replacement Militia Captain! He will be glad to know that he is now Captain of a one man squad and that he will be able to hone his skills until the end of time...

DF Gameplay Questions / Interesting Terrain Embark
« on: June 12, 2012, 08:53:59 pm »
Hey guys,

When generating a world and I tend to use maximum elevation variance, and choose an embark site with 8's 9's and *'s for relative elevation or a point where two rivers (streams) converge so that the site is good for plateaus, waterfalls and terraces. I usually embark on a 3x3 to save FPS. I also like multiple biomes with at least 1 wooded or better biome.

I'd like to embark on a site with a central hill, or failing that, some other strategic/interesting terrain feature and was wondering what tips, preferences or advice you lovely people have for generating and locating such an embark site. All input is welcome.

I recently tried to embark on an archipelago (water tiles around most of the edges) but it looked a bit rubbish and relative elevation was flat so I killed it.

DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack [0.34.07] [V12]

@slaytanic

thanks for the link. I may have to fiddle about a little, but at least i know where to edit the interface without actually running DF. If I get it reconfigured i'll post it up for other laptop users.

@Slaytanic

Well I'm not entirely sure but I recall that without LNP keybindings, on a laptop you have to hold shift when pressing the right hand button (>, =, pgDn) for stuff like navigation of z-levels and lists/menus.
There might be more things that are changed, I just know that without the tweaks of the keybindings it make DF a nightmare to play on my laptop.

I have had a look at manually changing keybindings myself but there's a lot of lists to go through and I am a lazy newb :)

@slaytanic

so to clarify, you've successfully updated the the lazy newb keybindings so that laptop users are able to build minecart tracks etc. ? If this is the case thankyou as I've been waiting ages to start a fort with post-34.07 DF.

DF Gameplay Questions / Missing HFS!
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:41:38 am »
 I recently embarked on a site, and using DF hack to position my central stairway I noticed that the entire map is revealed and there doesn't appear to be any HFS on any Z-level all the way down to the magma sea (it's a fairly shallow site of about 50 z-levels due to FPS constraints). Has this happened to anyone else before?

The main problem for me is that I use a laptop...so I need to wait for the lazy newb keybindings.

It's likely to be that your megabeasts/semi-megabeasts are all dying out. Try upping the number of semi-megabeasts by 5 or 10. I wouldn't make the 'end year' too low either, keep it on the default of 1050 to be safe.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No flux stone?
« on: April 02, 2012, 06:34:56 pm »
I'm finding it now. It seems to be only on worlds that have maxed out minerals, lowered it to about 500 and flux is fine.

I'm also having trouble creating world's containing flux with version .07. It doesn't appear to be anywhere in the worlds the I'm generating. Been prospecting and all I'm finding is some marble on occasion.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: FPS Problems, Playing on a weak laptop.
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:19:15 pm »
Thanks for all the advice and help guys, I'm running a 3x3, I turned off weather and temperature and my FPS is going really well. Got about 80 dwarfs and it hasn't dropped below 45 yet!

I do feel cheaty not having magma so I'm probably going to do some tests next time and try and find a good compromise.
Thanks again to everyone who gave advice,

@white_darkness
yeah I'm a student so I use it for pretty much everything. I haven't tried culling temperature and weather but i will soon, is it just a case of disabling them with the lazy newb pack?

@knutur yes it's windows. i have instigated steps 1.,2.,3, and 5. and will do some research on 4.

 Thanks for the help so far guys I'm going to test out the changes and see if my frame rate holds up a bit better once things start to get busy. I'm also trying to generate a shallower world as I've heard that may help.

DF Gameplay Questions / FPS Problems, Playing on a weak laptop.
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:43:18 pm »
Hey,

  My laptop is a bit too old and weak and so it starts to lag as soon as I get my first big wave of immigrants. I've tried some of the stuff to streamline it, like assigning traffic areas/highways and caging animals. I was wondering if somebody would be able to give me some specific advice to streamline DF so that my laptop could cope a bit better.

My Ram is 2GB and my processor is about 4 years old but it's nothing special from a £300 laptop.

Thankyou in advance

         Ben
