It takes awfully long to get the started seven married anyway.

And then did ARMOK say, the east is the holiest of directions, and thou shouldst not stand there lest thou be strucketh. down by my holiest of beards. And then did the dorfs did say, we shall build from the west, for more do we fear the beard of ARMOK than the strike of the elephant.

Permission to sig? =(

How do you turn off migrants, period?

General consensus is that you can't avoid the first two waves of migrants, but putting the pop cap on 0 should work after the outpost liaison leaves with the first caravan.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Desert Fortress and Pyramids!

Wow that is actually a great tip indeed. I need to study for the finals, but the main pyramid is almost complete and this new method is going to help a lot with the temples.

Not going to stop when they start coming. I think. I had a few years without sieges after I defeated them back to back for a while and got bored.
Is it possible to beat the green masses?

Yeah, the only thing that changed about booze and cooking is that now you can't make meals out of nothing but booze.

What I wanna know is, how come my dwarves cancel attending a party to go get a drink? Isn't drinking something you can do while you party?

( they don't actually drink while partying, I think. They stand around and socialize but where's the fun in that)

Well that's explained by the dorf mind, which is quite different to ours, spots the difference between drinks which are consumed as a part of social activity to those that are drunk to slake their thirst. So a dorf could drink 3 barrels of sunshine in a party environment but would gain zero nourishment from that. To circumvent this, the dorfs make a mental choice to leave the party and drink and come back. Without actually ever leaving the dining room, or even moving from their spot. Marvelous.

The mysteries of the dorf mind are numerous indeed, friends.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Nudist Fort: Possible?

I had a legendary dining room, legendary rooms with solid gold furniture, no deaths whatsoever, engraved everything everywhere with statues lining the halls. And still kids got to 0 happiness in a few months if I didn't make clothing for them.

So in my experience the uncovered thoughts add up very quickly and they are huge hits to happiness. Especially the no pants one.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: does anyone use castes
« on: May 26, 2012, 04:48:10 am »
I like to call them guilds, and migration with families frustrates me to no end because I can't just stick everyone in the related guildhalls since they insist on sleeping with their families.

Maybe a stricter caste system like "You belong to the guild of the more skilled and renowned spouse, and we don't care if you are a great fisherdorf so you better start learning how to work stone or it's the army in the squad called Red Shirts." would make for a good narrative. I should get to that after I'm done with my desert fort.

I'd need to learn how to use minecarts to to facilitate relative isolation though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Post how your workshops are set up!
« on: May 26, 2012, 04:34:26 am »
hmm. More recently I started setting them up in several Z levels when I figured out that going up or down a stair is the same as moving one square to a side. So instead of building a big 30x30 stockpile I make some smaller ones and put stairs. Didn't really do the math on how useful that is but it seems to work well enough.

You can drop the floor under a flier and it'll fall down and get stunned? I HAD NO IDEA.

Inspiring, to say the least.

Minecraft is not even similar to Dwarf Fortress. Like it was said before in this thread, one is a sandbox building game while other is a management game. If we're going to put every game with digging in it in the same category as DF, we might as well say Terraria is more similar to DF than Minecraft is, because it has a hell that you can dig down to, goblins that siege and some degree of NPC housing that you have to build a town for.

Pretty ridiculous to even compare those three.

Mineraft was originally planned as a total ripoff of Dwarf Fortress, then it took an arrow to the knee HERESY!!! *BLAM* then it became something almost entirely different; Minecraft's not a space management by an stretch of the word, though it's a great deal more user-friendly than DF, despite the fact that both lack tutorials.

Basically, it's the difference between normal legos and lego robotics if lego robotics could easily be mistaken for Matrix Code. Both are cool in their own way, but you can't make giant lava defense systems that inexplicably flood your farms with water, or beat back the forces of Hell itself and grow strawberries there.

Those memes in that first sentence made my eyes bleed and I almost slashed my wrists because I knew the sources for them. Sigh. I shall call  you brother from now on, because we are very similar.

I like minecraft, but my problem with it is.. that it's empty. I've built my share of grand cities with glowing towers spiraling into the night sky where gravity defying islands float and pour impossible rivers into the sea below.. but they were devoid of life, even in multiplayer. There is no purpose to whatever you build other than looking pretty. It just doesn't matter.

What I mean is: it lacks the spark of life the dorfs in dwarf fortress has, however faulty and stupid and unrealistic they are, there is no denying they seem almost alive with their vermin infested halls and sad little lives they spend as pawns to capricious and generally malicious Gods of Blood. That in my view is the single most important achievement of DF, one that Minecraft lacks.

It is totally fine as a sandbox builder though, and it is lots of fun for how much it costs and it's always nice to play it for a while when a new update comes along.

Oooh, that's mighty nice. And yes, it's useful that they can walk over the surface as they please, I love that. My first one still has about 30 levels to go, but it's alright, while they work I prepare the plans for the sun temple.
