DF Gameplay Questions / Stuck Miserable Dwarf
« on: April 04, 2012, 07:14:18 pm »
So, I was grinding copper axes to level my weaponsmith, and accidentally melted down one of his masterworks. The resulting unhappy thought (his only one) was apparently enough to completely negate the positive thoughts from his spouse, child, legendary meals, fine drinks, bedroom like a personal palace, satisfying work, yelling at someone in charge, starting a fist fight, enjoying a tastefully arranged and sublimely fabutastic statue, admiring his cabinet, and breaking a +marble throne+. He has no active labors, a bedroom I was reserving for the baron when he arrives, and nothing to do all day except diddle around in the dining hall or statue garden admiring shiny crap. Checking Dwarf Therapist, he's still at '0' happiness, and now he's stuck in the dining hall with the 'sleep' task active, but not moving. I'd rather not have him go insane (especially right in the middle of the damn dining hall), as I've invested quite a bit of time and resources into getting this derp up to a high level. If he does, I'm not worried about a tantrum spiral or anything, as EVERYONE else is ecstatic.

Is there anything else I can do for Urist McCrybaby, aside from walling him off before he beserks?

The tooltip for the aquifer option uses "you're" when it should be "your".[/grammarnazi]

Really awesome having everything in one place, for when I finally get around to updating. Love the little touches put into the tooltips as well! Made me laugh quite a bit. :D

I've seen dwarves get happy thoughts from admiring doors in statue gardens, so I'd assume they do count. It's basically a wall, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Soldier Mayor
« on: March 27, 2012, 06:21:34 pm »
Alright, thanks. My main concern was that I would see something like, "Mayor cancels kill Goblin Spearman: Console Urist McLazyPeasant" or something. If unhappy dwarves/liaisons start following him around for advice, at least he has a bunch of meat shield groupies.

DF Gameplay Questions / Soldier Mayor
« on: March 27, 2012, 12:12:38 pm »
So, one of my soldiers has been elected mayor. He has his office and what not, and seems happy enough (ecstatic), but is this going to conflict with him being able to fight? I don't really care if it creates problems with him being a parasitic noble, but losing a soldier after years of training would be quite a bummer.

If he can't fill both rolls, is there any way to prematurely end his term as mayor, short of an unfortunate accident?

Thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Artifact Iron Buckler vs Steel Shield

Hmm, thanks for the replies.

I didn't realize that material had less of an effect on shield performance than armor. While it seems a shame to leave an artifact piece of equipment unused, from what I've read the shield/buckler slot is too important to risk using sub-par equipment... and if shields have significantly more blockage, that seals the deal.

Maybe I'll give it to some useless hammerer or something, to make him feel special.

Nope.avi
I don't understand?  Is this a tool which helps game bugs with ghosts?

It's a TF2 reference, and just means 'nope'. If you're curious, look up 'Nope.avi' on youtube.

DF Gameplay Questions / Artifact Iron Buckler vs Steel Shield
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:04:52 pm »
I'm a bit new to DF, and have a question with a fortress I recently started.

One of my Urist McUseless migrants just made an artifact iron buckler, and as glad as I am to morph an Accomplished Cheesemaker into an armorsmith, I was wondering if the buckler was actually useful. I'm not exactly sure what the parameters are around shielding mechanics, but I'm guessing here that a shield offers more coverage than a buckler. Then again, I'm also assuming an artifact iron item will be stronger than a comparable steel one. Is it a reasonable trade off, or should I just let the thing rust?

Thanks.

Edit:
Should probably have specified this, sorry... the shields would currently be used by Axedwarves and possibly later Speardwarves.
