DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Visitors hostile after unretiring

So I've retired and unretired my fortress a few times, and each time, the visitors in my fortress stick around and become "hostile" after unretiring. They aren't actually hostile though, they just mill around at ground level, not eating or sleeping. Now I have a total of 163 visitors, compared to my dwarven population of 147.

Anyone notice anything like this? I dunno what to do besides killing all the visitors or start a new fortress. :(

The year is 646, and over six years have passed since the first settlers arrived in Athelkadol. The wealth of the settlement has brought many migrants, and the population of this teeming metropolis is about 205. The wealth enjoyed by these dwarves is coveted by the kobolds and goblins of the area, and they have tried many a time to siege and destroy the city. All their efforts have so far been in vain but...

After the latest siege, the carcasses of the dead goblins and their monstrous mounts lay strewn about. Ever so careful about hygiene, the dwarves set to work dumping their dead enemies into a garbage pit.

The overseer of this city decided some time ago that a simple hole, channeled into the earth would do fine as a garbage pit. He did not think about dwarves that -enter- the pit to dump their waste, rather then pitching the waste over into the pit. Chaos ensued when waste thrown into the pit hit dwarves inside the pit. The waste was thrown at such a high speed that garbage tore right through flesh. In just a few seconds, 12 dwarves lay dead or dying, including a socialite and her newborn child. Thus began the spiral into madness.

So, what are some stupid tantrum spirals that you've been responsible for? I've had a few, but this one is by far the most face palm worthy. I'm face palming right now and the tantrum has only begun. 30 dwarves dead. Only 170 left to go! Oh wait, 171. A baby was just born.

DF Gameplay Questions / Peasants not working

So I've been running this fortress for about 5 years, and there's now a generation of children growing up into peasants. Thing is, they can't seem to do any work I assign them, specifically, mining. I trapped some of them in a tunnel deep underground and I was planning on making them explore the caverns, but they can't mine. They'll grab the mining pick, but unlike my other miners who hold it with one hand, the three peasants multigrasp their pick.

They do the same thing with the axe I gave them as well, and they won't even build with stone that's near them. I thought maybe it was the tools, but there are two other migrants I trapped with them and they build/mine/chop like I tell them to.

What gives? Are all my peasants doomed to hollow lives of hauling?
