DF Gameplay Questions / Moving asterisks on the map
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:01:12 pm »
I found nothing about it: What do these moving asterisks on the fast-travel map in the adventure mode mean? I tried to zoom in on one of them, but there was nothing extraordinary.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the new running mechanics. That would explain why the zombies got me all the times.
Does running tire you out?

When I entered the tower, it became obvious what happened: The necromancers fled from the undeads they created. In the tower, I saw two necromancers attacking their own creations, though the zombies didn't return the punches. Separated zombie limbs where however resurrected by the necromancers.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Necromancers running away from tower?
« on: July 08, 2014, 01:48:25 pm »
I just created a new world with a new adventurer and approached a necromancer's tower. Upon arrival, I see three necromancers fleeing in panic from the tower. The necromancers are neutral to me, but i really would like to know why they fled. They were quite fast, too. A lot faster than my demigod adventurer with light baggage...
So... has anyone any idea why?

I suppose the other inhabitants of the hamlets will eventually become suspicious when the necromancer fails to grow old, and she will flee. I'm not sure, though. Maybe that has changed and the town has its very own friendly necromancer from the neighbourhood.

I finally managed to get my hands on a necromancer's slab after destroying literally every undead in the tower. I raised an army of several hundred undeads, marched to the north to an abandoned fortress. I countered several ambushes of dozens of goblins or kobolds. I was almost there, I just needed to cross one last river. I had only a novice swimming skill, but it was just a small river, not unlike many others I encountered.
Except that it was dark and there was a waterfall just outside of my field of vision. I drifted down the waterfall and began to drown. In the next moment that was my least problem, since dozens of undead bodies dropped on my head. I was dead.

I did this in another case, where the possible area was only five tiles on the world map (and I was lucky, it was in the first one). I can't use the maximal fort size, since DF hugs all the working memory if I do that, a fourth of a world map tile works though. That means, there are more than 400 possible places to search with a fortress, leading to an expectation value of 200 forts before I find the corpse. Probably less, if I embark on the most probable sites first.
To check for items: don't I need a bookkeeper with a room and a chair for this? This takes significantly more time.

I did, but as I said, the region is rather large. It takes up roughly a third of the continent and is larger than most human realms.
I can narrow it down to a smaller area, since I know where I was and where I wanted to go, but it is still al lot of space.

DF Gameplay Questions / Locating the corpse of an adventurer

I have a habit of bringing the corpses of my more successful adventurers to a central resting place.
However, one adventurer who slew many night trolls got murderd in his sleep by goblins while resting outside. To find his corpse, I would have to search a really large area, which is kind of annoying. Is there a better way to find a specific dead person?

If you can trust the wiki, then yes.
Also, I remember that someone at the museum became a husk after becoming a vampire or a necromancer, I do not remember which one it was.
Edit: It was a necromancer. I am not sure if the same thing would happen for a vampire (vampires don't need to breath, unlike necromancers).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't find the Roc in her lair
« on: June 19, 2014, 01:38:53 pm »
Tried it, but id did not work. However, I found her later (or she found me) on the other end of the world while I was out to kill a titan. Just before its shrine, kobolds and the Roc attacked me. I have no idea why she was there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't find the Roc in her lair
« on: June 17, 2014, 04:32:34 am »
Recently, I was requested to kill a Roc named Fath Largevigor the Snake of Glaciers. This Roc was one of the favourite motifs for engravings in a long-running fortress, so I took a long trip through the Spike of Dragons, the mountain where she lives.
When I arrived at her lair, I saw no Roc, but a few undead roaming around. Since my character was a necromancer, I recruited them as minions and waited for Fath. After a short time, Fath attacked and struck down some of my minions. I threw a dagger at her, but missed. Before I had a chance to throw another object, Fath took off and left the site. I haven't seen her since.
I wandered around a bit, got rid of a kobold ambush, went back to the lair, but Fath was not there.
So how do I find this Roc? I waited at her lair for a long time, but she did not appear again.

Thanks for the tips. The random room thing was problematic, because most of my rooms where in use.
The solution was to declare a small statue garden in a lockable room and assign it to the vampire. Despite his depression, he visited the room eventually. After that, I locked the door and activated the spikes.

For that, I need a crime first. And for the "crime" of violating export bans or production orders, conviction is done without any possibilities for me to interfere. Is there an option to convict someone besides hoping for an additional vampire to strike?
