DF Suggestions / Clean Work Area
« on: July 23, 2012, 05:06:55 am »
It always ticks me off that build orders get cancelled because, "Oh no!!! A sock is in the way!!!", but common sense tells us that this problem shouldn't happen because people usually prepare the work area before they build upon it. I suggest that a check be performed, and if there is something blocking the construction of something, it gets moved to an adjacent square (that is empty). I think Urist would approve.

DF General Discussion / Obituaries

Have you ever had a moment in DF where one (or more) of your dwarves do something so awesome that you HAVE to tell EVERYONE about it? Now's your chance. Here's an example to get you started-

I had a dwarf by the name of Kogan (I forgot his last name.). After watching his friends and family die at the hands of the enemy, he struggled for about two years alone in the wilderness searching for whatever plants he could get his hands on to eat along with burying the dead. He suffered through many trials (At one point of time, I missed a trade caravan because I wasn't paying attention and on top of that, the migrants that were supposed to show up never did.). When the migrants finally showed up over two years later, he helped to rebuild the settlement, and with his visionary leadership, the fortress flourished.

Okay... I'm not sure what to make of this idea, but here goes-

I was recently playing DF when one of my dwarves did something so awesome that I wanted to tell everyone about it. However, going onto the forum and saying, "Urist McDwarf did THIS!!!" would've been a waste of everyone's time. Then, it hit me- An obituary section that is set aside for us to tell everyone about our awesome dwarves. Yay or nay?

P.S.- If you are curious, I'll tell you what my dwarf did that made me so happy.

DF Suggestions / Valkyries
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:38:32 am »
Last week, I was watching Max Payne (Yes, it's a movie now.) and there was a part that mentioned that Valkyries are War Angels. Of course, I was unable to post last week (for certain reasons), but I thought that I would mention that when I heard those words, I thought of Dwarf Fortress. That's my main suggestion.

My sub-suggestion is the following-

In order to summon the Valks to help them in battle, the dwarf needs to drink a special elixir. However, only some of the dwarves can use the elixir to summon the Valks. The ones that aren't so lucky will have horrible hallucinations and kill themselves.

Yay or Nay?

DF General Discussion / Amazing Discovery!!!
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:29:48 am »
Sometimes, I will randomly do pointless things in DF because I can, but this time, I’m glad I did this time because I have discovered a cool Easter egg hidden within DF!!! If you want to unlock it, just do what I did.

1.) Play Adventure Mode.
2.) Create a human character with any stats.
3.) Head to the closest market and trade all your items for cheese. And I mean ALL of your items!!!
4.) Go into an empty house and drop all of the cheese on the ground. Leave it there.
5.) Walk around (*without using the Travel Screen until your character succumbs to starvation. You are allowed to rest at Towns/Cities/whatever to prevent death by Night Creatures (VERY important!!!).
6.) Play Adventure Mode again.
7.) Go to the spot where you dropped the cheese in the previous game. You will come across a peculiar sight- An injured cat chasing a mouse while a confused human Cook and his pet dog watch.
8.) Hit ‘K’ and move the cursor over them to view their names. **Do those names sound familiar to you?

*Not really sure if you can use the Travel Screen or not, but to be safe, just do what I did, okay?
**HINT- One of them is everybody’s favorite fat orange feline!!!

P.S.- I checked the Raws and I didn’t see anything about this, so I think this feature is hardcoded.

Good luck!!!

DF General Discussion / Another DF Movie Thread!!!
« on: June 30, 2012, 03:08:17 pm »
I had this swimming around in my head for the past few days and I'll go BERSERK!!! if I don't post it.

People have already posted their DF movie ideas, but I decided to do something a bit different. Instead of posting the usual, I have decided to give my DF movie idea the Hollywood treatment. By that, I mean that NOTHING is going to be accurate, but it would still entertain the masses. Here goes-

Narrator: An ancient discovery...
*Cut to scientist (played by a scrawny Chris Hemsworth) reluctantly pulling out a cotton candy stick.*
*Cut to people screaming in an elevator during an earthquake, followed by the power going out.*
Narrator: DARKNESS... Has arrived...
Narrator: And only ONE man...
Narrator: Can save us all!!!
*Cut to scientist from earlier scene trying to read the ingredients label on the cotton candy stick and yelling, "Zustash Kin Gorroth? What does it even mean?" followed by him swiping his arm across his worktable.
*Cut to scientist hammering down drinks at the local bar. A short man (played by Danny Devito) says, "We need to talk. Privately.*
*Cut to short guy outside of the bar saying, "You have been chosen by the ancients to defeat the God of Blood. Only then, will our species break the ancient slave curse.*
Narrator: The WAR has begun!!!
MIlitary General: Our weapons have no effect on these creatures!!!
Soldier: There are too many of them!!!
Soldier: Aaaaaah!!! *gets bitten by a crazy person*
Female Doctor (**played by Katy Perry): It appears as if the teeth have pierced through the cranial wall, bruising the brain!!!
Female Doctor *after looking at the scientist*: Have you been working out? *pan to a muscular Chris Hemsworth*
Scientist *with a strong accent*: I dunno, but I could go for a beer right about now.
*Cut to scene of a creepy guy in a hood (played by Alan Rickman) drinking blood from a chalice.
Guy in hood: *laughs evilly* Nobody shall defeat my blood army!!!
*Cut to scene of scientist practicing the art of swinging the cotton candy stick around*
Scientist (while frusterated with his training): I can't do it!!!
Short guy:  The others can do LOTS of stuff. Like digging *nods over to another short guy, who happens to be practicing his trench digging*. Can you dig? *pause* I made my point. Shut up and keep training!!!
*Cut to another scene of crazy people biting everyone.*
Short guy: You must destroy those who raise the dead!!!
Scientist: Tickles a zombie in the stomach with the cotton candy stick, followed by the short guy beheading a necromancer with a double-bladed axe.
Short guy: And THAT is how you stop them.
*Cut to cliched scene of the (now Godly-looking) scientist and Armok fighting with two different flavors of cotton candy while surrounded by a bunch of fog and a cool strobelight effect*
Armok: Once I destroy you, there will be NOTHING stopping me from enslaving your ENTIRE race!!!
Scientist (looking hella badass with long hair and huge muscles): We'll see about THAT!!!
*Cut to black*
*Sound of breathing, followed by the silhouette of Chris Hemsworth saying, "What have I done?".*
*The words "Dwarf Fortress" slam up against the screen*
Narrator: DWARF FORTRESS!!!
Post Title: Written and produced by Eric Kripke (Terminator 4, Supernatural TV series)
Post Title: And directed by Michael Bay (War Of The Worlds, Transformers)

**I told you it was getting the Hollywood treatment, didn't I? ;)

DF Suggestions / Plant Oil As Lubricant
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:12:48 pm »
I was just thinking that, since we have minecarts now, the dwarves should be a le to use plant oils to lubricate the wheels/ball bearings on the carts. If the dwarves neglect to regularly oil the wheels, the carts would slow down, create sparks (which can light things on fire), or derail the carts.

P.S.- Sorry about the topic name. I just wanted something that would make people go, "What's this idiot want now?" and then, click on it.

I apologize for such a stupid idea. :(

EDIT- I changed the thread name.

DF General Discussion / Favorite Deity?
« on: June 26, 2012, 10:30:27 am »
Who is your fave DF God or Goddess and WHY?

My favorite God would be Armok because, let's face it- DF is a VIOLENT game and Armok TOTALLY fits into the dark setting within the game.

Okay... That was a crappy explanation. Let me try again-

I like Armok because it provides inspiration to build bigger and better forts. And by bigger, I mean more menacing and by better, I mean filled with more deadly traps and highly trained soldiers. Armok, in my opinion, is the most powerful DF God of them all because, frankly, He is like a hydrogen bomb against a hospital full of newborn children (That's a metaphor for those "pro-life" type DF Gods and Godesses, by the way.). Just ask yourself- If you were approached by two groups, and one of them haf the ability to WIPE OUT the other (and anybody else that stood in their way), wouldn't you join them?

DF General Discussion / Hand Of Armok

Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever created a realistic looking hand flipping the bird out of Admantine as a Megaproject in DF?

DF General Discussion / Quick Fortress/Adventure Mode Question
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:37:50 pm »
If I trade something in Fortress Mode (such as a crapload of gems) to a trade caravan, would I see those traded gems in another fortress in Adventure mode? Or does the game not keep track of stuff like that?

DF General Discussion / Something To Think About
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:43:16 am »
The current version of DF is 0.34.

In other words, DF is ONLY 34% completed!!!

IMAGINE what version 1.0 will be like!!!

DF Suggestions / Cemeteries
« on: May 17, 2012, 08:37:49 pm »
The current burial methods take up too much space and are WAY too time consuming!!! We should be able to just drop the bodies in a designated hole in the ground (in a Cemetary Zone), cover it up with some dirt, and be done with it!!!

P.S.- Perhaps, certain corpses (like elves) can be used to nourish the land to increase the likelihood of a bountiful harvest?

It just hit me that the goblins should ride on the back of land animals that could kill anybody who stepped in the way (like a Hell's Angel on a motorcycle), beat the shit out of their victims and ride off with the stolen loot. To top it off, the animals should make loud noises, so that EVERYBODY can hear them coming.

DF Suggestions / Air Horns
« on: May 17, 2012, 05:17:11 pm »
I think that it would be greatly beneficial to allow the player to build air horns that could be triggered by different type of input. An example of its usage would be an emergency alert system that AUTOMATICALLY tells the dwarves to stop working and move to a designated area (instead of having to do it manually), allow the military to prepare for battle, and when done, will send an "all clear" sound to tell everybody to start working again.  We could also make use of the flowing water to make some kind of synthesizer with the air horns (Different horns for different musical notes.). On top of that, if we allow the player to swap out the air horn sounds using a special DF folder, I'm SURE that they will create some pretty ineresting stuff. Sooo.. What do you think?.

P.S- I almost forgot, but the musical horns could provide happy thoughts to your dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Better Dwarven Computer Using Minecarts?
« on: May 17, 2012, 04:11:04 pm »
I was thinking about dwarven computers and minecarts a little bit and came to the conclusion that DF players could, by building minecarts out of different materials and setting them to not have to be filled before being pushed down a track, create better timing systems for their dwarven computers. An example would be that the CPU in the computer I'm using right now runs at 3Ghz (3.3 as of tomorrow, when my new CPU comes in from Newegg), but the RAM in my computer runs only at 800Mhz (slow, I know). All in all, I think it would improve the development of dwarven computers because we can now adjust the speed of different things being triggered, if that makes sense to anybody. Anyway, I thought I'd jut throw that one out there and see what anybody else thought about it.
