DF Suggestions / Re: Cults
« on: July 25, 2012, 11:13:56 pm »
Probably. IRL, priests held a high station because they lead the religion that was the backbone of their society. Imagine how influential they'd be if the gods were REAL...
Please don't turn this post into the start of a religious debate. Seriously, it will just end in tears for everyone who isn't merely annoyed, and I'll likely be in the latter category.

How am I turning this thread into a religious debate? Wait- You ARE talking about ME, right? 'Cause I don't appreciate that you are accusing me of something like that. Is this about what I said about the difference between a "cult" and a "religion" and that I called early Christianity a "cult"? Because I hate to break it to everyone, but it WAS a cult. And, in case you forgot, I was using Christianity as an example. Here's another example- Some low budget movies have a "cult" of "followers". Happy now?

By the way, you are one of the people on this forum who's logic is great enough to gain and keep my respect. Let's keep it that way, shall we?

The tax break thing was a joke, by the way.

Let's all agree that we enjoy this thread and don't want anything bad to happen to it, okay?

1. Thanks.
2. Can you say, "Fu--Oh, no! I'm being eaten by a zombie! And my left arm, which is really not being as successful."
3. Pretty much.
4. Voudoun, IIRC, has some haungans who are willing to make zombies but  most don't like those. Of course, this is vague recollections from a somewhat well-researched RPG supplement...

2.) This gives the player a bigger reason to find and expel/kill cultists.
4.) Thanks for the information.

Also, I must point out that a cult is technically a religion that isn't big enough to be called a religion. An example of this would be Christianity, which started as a Jewish cult. The reason I'm mentioning this is because the temples (suggested elsewhere) should have an effect on whether a belief system is still a "cult" or if it is considered to be big enough to be  called a "religion".

Guys, guys, we really don't need this on our forums. Man up and say nothing if you've nothing but flames or firewood in your words.

That, and I want to read more about this. I find the supernatural to be fascinating whether I believe it exists or not.

This guy's right. This thread was about Astral Projection. Let's agree to disagree and get back on topic.

I know this is kinda random, but perhaps, when the economy works again, the High Priests can get a tax break, based upon the amount of worshippers inside their temples?

And you've walked into ass hat land.
Excuse me? Let's get one thing straight- You aren't going to call me an "asshat". Do you understand me?

MrWiggles beat me to it.

If you don't like dwarves hauling stuff from construction sites, don't let dwarves haul the items or don't build in areas where stuff's being taken away from. That's control. If you don't like not being able to control every litle thing your dwarves do, play another game.

Setting construction above hauling would have at least as many problems as setting hauling above construction does now.

*FACEPALM!!!*

The POINT of this ENTIRE thread was that the dwarves were INEFFICIENT at hauling stuff away from build sites. I never said that I didn't like that they hauled stuff away. Also, isn't DF about MICROMANAGEMENT? As in, "the player controls the little details"? The job suspension problem is less of a detail and more of a headache, if you ask me. That's all I'm trying to say. Actually, here's an example of what I'm trying to say (based on reality)-

My father owns a general contracting business. What do you think he would say or do, if i asked him what the construction workers do when a large stone is blocking a construction site? He would laugh at me, then ask me, "Why do you ask such stupid questions?" What do you think the foreman would do or say to a worker who goes, "Oh no!!! I can't build here because a HUGE rock is in the way!!!"? He would fire him. That's what.

And THAT is the point of my thread.

Anyway, it's kinda sad that a race as hard working as the dwarves can't take two frikken seconds to move something that's blocking a build site, but decide to suspend the construction instead.

This is one of the most unambiguously great ideas in the history of suggestions! Just placing a properly prepared totem on a slain corpse to keep it from rising seems no more supernatural than the corpses rising in the first place.
Perhaps, but it doesn't make sense. "I'll put this skull, a symbol of death, on a corpse to prevent the powers of death from working on it!"

I like this idea. After all, just about every religion has one There's a thread called "cults" that would be a perfect fit for this idea. Perhaps, we can combine the two ideas?
Cultists using totems would make sense. Cultists warding off the undead usually wouldn't make sense, depending on the cult. Totems warding off the undead is stupid--use the symbols of dwarven deities or whatever.

Quote
As for general suggestions- I think it would be interesting, if civs were more/less likely to trade with/attack your fort, depending on what was being "advertised" via the use of the totems. In the "Cults" thread, there is talk of building temples. Perhaps, the totems an act as enhancements to the temples? After all, the difference between a church and a synagogue is the symbols that are used inside and around the building.
Totems would probably turn off more civilized folk and attract more barbaric folk, especially if the totems were of sentient races. Harvest some elf skulls somehow and turn them into totems, and you could be trading with the goblins whilst defending against dwarven sieges! These goblin traders would be rare, but as goblin culture "infected" yours, more goblins would be fine with coming here and you'd be able to collect elf skulls more easily than before, thanks to more lenient ethics towards eating people.

It's voodoo, but that's normally evil and related to zombies. So necros would ally with the voodoo guys with totems.
Not exactly, but close enough.

1.) Agreed.
2.) But if the cultists use these items in their temples to ATTRACT the undead...?
3.) Is this an agreement?
4.) Yes. What most people call "Voodoo" is actually "Hoodoo" and I can't seem to recall anything about those belief systems raising the dead. There might be though. It's been awhile since I read up on the topic, so I've probably forgotten stuff.

Quote from: Shitty Analogy
Next time I see my old man, I will mention that he should change the way he drives when he is stuck in traffic. I'm sure he will be much obliged by me telling him that his driving style sucks...

Alright, so we have the shitty analogy as above. Its doing a really poor job of saying that  you cant adjust your play style because you can't control when their is conflicting jobs when you're placing constructions.

So, for the Analogy to be true, then the above needs to be applicable to how Dwarf Fortress plays.

And this is why it's shitty Analogy.

You're fully capable of controlling hauling or construction placement. Where as with traffic, you'll often be in traffic through happenstance no matter your driving (playing) style.

So, are you always going to ignore the whole hauling is more important vs. construction placement?

I am fully capable of those things? How? 'Cause every time I put down stockpiles for items, the dwarves take their precious time to move said items out of the way. If I had control over these things, I wouldn't have suggested this in the first place!!!

I believe that construction and hauling should go hand in hand. That's all. It's not like there's anything wrong with having an opinion, is there?

DwarfMeister: your need to throw personal insults is quite unbecoming. I argued with facts and links, not ad hominems.

btw you're STILL trying to one-up the Russians ? xD. Well you can use your anecdote of one guy who packs vodka away, and I actually cite figures. Each Russian drinks 15.76 litres of pure ethanol per year vs 9.44 in the USA. It's in a different league up there. And the USA's alcohol consumption is FAR better recorded than Russia, so that probably a low estimate on Russian consumption. I'll take researched figures over "gut logic", "me and my buddies" anecdotes any day.

Btw: Cheetar was responding to your statement "Believe it or not, we love our booze so much that we have counseling centers ". Every country has that. Except those where alcohol is illegal. Then you said there's security related to drinking because "We are Americans.". Hell, everywhere else has that too in area or times of the year where people are prone to heavy drinking. It's the same deal everywhere. You specifically stated America was somehow unique in this area, and Cheetar only stated that that was not the case. You would seem to be "moving the goal posts".

I can't use personal insults? Are you f***ing kidding me? The guy's acting like a dick. What I did was fair and square. And what's this BS about me hating Russia? You don't f***ing know me, Dude, so I suggest that you keep your mouth shut about that. If anything, I was making a joke about my own country by saying that we are so bad at handling our liquor that we NEED police protection, but the guy that was arguing with me decided that he could be a hero by telling me off. That's not cool. In fact, what I said was, in fact, a LOT nicer than the things he said. I basically said that we enjoy our booze, but we overdo it sometimes. He said that we are a bunch of pussies that can't hold our liquor. I'm not going to take that lying down. Maybe, if he apologized for what he said, I'll apologize for not doing enough research into the matter, which makes me wonder- Who would even waste their time finding out how much MORE one country drinks from another? This isn't a competition and I think it's pretty sad that people got butthurt over something HARMLESS that I said and try to shut me up with "research", "statistics", and name calling. In other words, acting like a child.

I suggested changing your playstyle because it would avoid the issue which seems to annoy you so much.

Next time I see my old man, I will mention that he should change the way he drives when he is stuck in traffic. I'm sure he will be much obliged by me telling him that his driving style sucks...
The analogy doesn't fit. Traffic is not something you can control. You have full control over whether or not you designate a construction zone on top of items which are currently queued for hauling. To use your analogy, this would be like your old man demanding that the speed limit be raised so that he can get to work on time rather than leaving the house a few minutes earlier. Change your behavior to fit the environment, because the world isn't going to conform to your wishes.

I mean I'm not telling you that you can't complain, just that complaining is going to do no good. Until Toady makes another pass at hauling, things are going to stay the way they are. You can avoid the issue by ensuring that the construction area is clear of items which your dwarves will be hauling/using. If you continue designating walls on top of items then it is entirely your fault when you get gaps in the wall.

If this WERE changed, we'd have your opposite on the forum RIGHT NOW complaining about job cancellation spam due to items that were moved by builders not respecting the in-use tags.

It DOES fit. And traffic CAN be controlled. Ever heard of a stoplight? And, for the record, I'm aware that the world isn't at my beck and call. DF, however, can be improved upon. And the improvement that I suggested was for it to be EASIER to build walls in areas that are LITTERED with lots of items. I'm not you and I'm fine with that. If you want to have crooked walls, be my guest, but I consider them to be an eyesore. And when did I say that jobs should be cancelled? I was saying that moving the item should be PART of the building job. What's so hard to understand about that?

It's an American brand. Beer is a big thing here, especially in the South (NASCAR might have something to do with this!!!). Believe it or not, we love our booze so much that we have counseling centers (Al-Anon) that help people kick their drinking habits because a lot of us (still small compared to the general population) become a danger to others when we are intoxicated. In fact, during holidays, you'll notice a HUGE increase in the amount of police patrolling the streets because... We are Americans. ;)

Americans aren't actually that extraodinary in alcohol abuse, compared to most other countries.

I never said we were. I was saying that we ENJOY our booze.

lol @ the idea that other countries don't have AA honestly what do americans think goes on in other countries. we don't live in caves!

EVERY other English-speaking country consumes MORE alcohol than the gentrified pussies in USA. (UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand). While Russians consider beer to be a soft-drink and sell it to 10 year olds openly. (Real men of course drink unmixed Vodka by the gallon.) Germans and Northeners in the UK drink beer which is 8-10% alcohol. Even the French manage to down more yummy Ethanol per person per year than weak-livered Americans.

Here's the top alcohol consumers: USA is #24 in beer consumption, and not in the top 50 for general alcohol:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_alcohol_consumption

When did I ever say that Americans drink MORE than everybody else? And who do you think you're calling a pussy? 8-10% alcohol? Pfft!!! That's NOTHING!!! And your argument about drinking unmixed vodka sucks because I know LOTS of people who drink it "by the gallon". In fact, I know a guy who does that whenever he possibly can. Obviously, you are one of those 10 year olds that you have spoken of. And for the record, my liver's pretty damn strong.

By the way, statistics don't take into account the people who DIDN'T report their drinking habits.

Al-Anon doesn't do that; it's for family members and friends of alcoholics, and that sort of thing. You're thinking of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

They aren't the same thing?
