DF General Discussion / Choose A Side!!!
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:11:25 am »
Scenario:

It is the first year and your dwarves are busy working. Unbeknownst to them, there are two parties on the way to the fort. One party consists of highly trained goblin assassins with some kickass armor. The other party consists of an elven caravan containing mostly useless crap.

Would you-

A.) Want the Goblins to win and try your luck at, somehow, defeating them (or outsmarting them)?
B.) Want the Elves to win and hope that they bring you something that can benefit you?

Oh yeah.. Come up with your own answers if the ones I posted don't do it for ya.

GO!!!.

And don't use rough stones for building, make blocks.

Also, blocks can be put in bins and you could sell the bins. But who would want to sell a perfectly fine stone block?

Wow dude!!! I did not know that. Thank you. :)

why would you need rain for a farming plot anyway (to return to OP). Either you can farm it or not, since rain won't make muddy stone.

Don't the crops need to be watered?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Longest Running Fort?
« on: April 22, 2012, 08:09:43 pm »
What was your longest running fort (If you don't know, go by memory or make something up. I like reading about this stuff for whatever reason...)? What were it's moments of greatness and how did it fall? Mine lasted about 15 years and fell apart do to general corruption.

P.S.- Yes... I suck at Dwarf Fortress (Although "suck" is a relative term in this case...).

Vegas.
Vegas often takes the form of a Female Human and is associated with Luck, One-Piece suits, and Bunny Ear Headbands.

Oh. Like "Lady Luck", right? I mean... Does she get her name from Las Vegas (known for it's casinos)? Or is it just a coincidence?
Yes.
Yes? Yes what? Yes about the coincidence? Or the other thing?

That Armok has sent you rain is a sign of great destiny. You have been chosen to shed blood in his name for all eternity.

Go forth and fullfill your role! Please Armok and become a god amongst men!

It's kinda weird that you said that 'cause I'm in the process of building a military training facility right now...

Have you ever had one of those moments where it seemed like Armok was (somehow) listening to you? Here's mine-

I was staring at a farm plot and was thinking about how I had to wait for rain (I'm too lazy to irrigate it myself.) and it suddenly started to rain. Now, my crops will get water!!!

Sooo... Anybody have moments like that?

Make rock crafts out of the stone; they're lightweight, and sell for much much more.

Good idea. :)

Me:You!!!
Other Dwarf: Who? Me?
Me:Yes. You. What is your name?
Other Dwarf: Uuuuh... Urist?
Me: Okay, Urist... I want you to bring everybody into the woods and start cutting down trees.
Urist: Why?
Me: Our survival is at stake and I am counting on you to help us see through this situation.
Urist: Ummm... Okay, but...
Me: Are you on my side or not?
Urist: Yeah... But...
Me: Look... This work is most definitely going to suck, but just think about all of your descendants gathering around the magnificent statue made made in your honor.
Urist: *thinks for a second* Sounds good.
Me: Yes. It does. Now, get to work!!!
Urist: Okay. *walks away*
Me: *thinking to myself* Sucker...

The more you buy, the more wagons will come in the future.

And record a macro to select a bunch.
I use enter, down arrow x12

*facepalm* Macros... OF COURSE!!! Thanks a bunch!!!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / HELP!!! Too many resources!!!
« on: April 22, 2012, 05:13:54 pm »
I'm not sure if I'm playing it correctly, but it seems that I always end up with a huge abundance of stuff (usually wood and stone) that I don't need. Since I'm a greedy bastard, atom smashing is out of the question. I would prefer to trade it for stuff that would serve a better purpose (or help me skip some steps in the manufacturing of certain items). The only problem is that the trade caravan has that stupid weight limit and I don't want to hack the game files to change it. Is it possible to "trick" the next caravan to bring more wagons the next time around? Also, is it possible to select n entire page of items on the "bring items to depot" screen? I'm tired of clicking on EACH item. Sometimes, I just want to get rid of everything on the list. Thanks.

DF Suggestions / Where Are All The Volcanoes?
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:46:08 pm »
I find it funny that the magma just sits there and doesn't do anything (unless you make it do something). I think that there should be a random chance that the mountain explodes, spewing hot magma all over your dwarven settlement. To make stuff more FUN, the poisonous gasses could suffocate nearby dwarves as well. Luckily, the dwarves can protect themselves by living in their obsidian "volcano shelter" for a few months (or years).

Also, the volcano could erupt when you are playing in a different region causing a small change to the environment. A region near the erupted volcano, for example, could have a harder time growing crops because the sunlight is blocked by the volcanic smoke.

On the plus side, volcanic ash could be a better fertilizer for certain plants (but could kill other plants).

As a side note to Toady, I understand that implementing a feature like this would probably take a LOT of time, but I think it would be AWESOME if you did. :)
