DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Soldiers and Relationships
« on: October 28, 2014, 11:54:36 am »
Hi! I don't post here very much because most of my questions end up answered in some long and drawn out science thread (You know, the ones where people do horrible things to dorfs.) But uh, I'm curious. Does anyone know why it's impossible for soldiers to form any kind of relationships with their squad mates? I've always liked to imagine that my military is a band of brothers (or sisters) but looking in relationships you find that the person they've been sparring with every day for 3 years is a complete stranger to them. Is this a thing that's getting changed eventually or something that there's a fix for? I know it's a small detail but it drives me crazy..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Oh my Kobold
« on: April 02, 2014, 07:05:11 pm »
Okay so. I've heard talk about embarking with a cave in your site before and subsequently finding friendly creatures there.. During Embark I ended up with a Kobold cave... Is it normal for caves like this to have over 100 kobolds? Because there are a lot of kobolds.. There may in fact be too many kobolds. My small military finds more the deeper we go and as we are on year 9 now with no goblin activity I'm concerned that these adorable kobolds are somehow the cause of it... Do friendly Kobolds en mass stop goblins?

(I put the pictures as spoilers so they don't cover the entire page.)

TL'DR How do I hold all of these Kobolds?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Question about Miasma
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:39:32 pm »
I've always used methods that drop invaders down large pits, But nomal corpses do eventually rot into bones..... It's very random though. I've had a few goblin corpses sitting in one of my mass graves for years and go nowhere. But I've had others that go in and turn to bones a few months later.. It should be noted however that out of every stack of bones I get. The last bone is unuseable, like, . Exactly who and what rots is also up for debate, stray animals that died from starvation or goblins do not, most goblins do though. I have screen shots, I'll upload them when I get home.

They End up like
Goblin Namehaver's bone. when they're not useable
Goblin Namehaver's bone . When they are useable.

I don't think you can dump carts diagonally. And while outside works.... I get into a weird paranoid state while playing Dwarffortress Any link to the outside that isn't filled with a defense fills me with an OCD induced dread.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question about Miasma
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:11:14 am »
Sorry, I didn't see any exacts about this on the wiki

In a standard one of my fortresses there is normally a ridiculously large room where I plant corpses until they can grow into bones (as my name implies) with minecarts however I can have them all dropped down a hole where they will sit on a corpse stockpile until ripe. How many z levels down would I need to make it so the Miasma can't creep back up? I'm not quite sure where the cut off point is.

Does that mean undead sieges from the halls as well as the tower? If so that's awsome.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mountain Hall Neighbors?

I'm in vanilla DF, no tile sets, no mods, no messing with the raws. I have "Mountain Hall" neighbors seerate from my dwarves (my parent civ is on the other side of the map). There's nothing in the wiki about it. What does this mean?

Ever since they've only sent ambush squads led by elves.
A sure sign that they are tunneled way past the bottom of the barrel.

It's just not been a good embark for them, It's not even just my dorfs who have dismissed them as a minor threat. They lost their law-bringer in their first ambush, We figured out an ambush was happening when we tried to peel him out of a trap. Then an ambush they tried a few seasons later during the elf caravan was just comical. The elfs actively ignored them, setting up the trade depot while the goblins as a group chased different merchants around eventually ending with them all chasing a single merchant through the trap hallway.. A few more seasons later they had their first siege during a human caravan, charging in and immediately having their leader stabbed through the brain by a caravan guard causing the rest of the siege to retreat. All of my engravings seem to be goblins being ripped apart by traps.. or that dragon that came at the same time as their ambush.

Does anyone know if they accept gift baskets? maybe some tasteful goblin bone jewelry.

Anyone else have any stories about tragic goblin civs that just really aren't cut out for this attacking thing?

Nah, Just started a new fort in a hybrid Mirthful forest/Good desert.

There's a longsword just sitting there. Waiting.

I know I'm past the deadline but I still would like to share this. A child threw a party in the upper leves of my Fort during a siege. I hadn't scrambled the military yet because the traps normally keep everything out, they jammed all of the traps with gore and had gotten in. Attending the party was a ranger, a few random civillians, and a bunch of children. The goblins broke in and stomed the party, everyone started to flee except for the ranger, he calmly turned and shot a gobin through the brain. A few attempted to get down the narrow passage way and he just kept picking them off one shot per goblin. Eventually enough got into the room and surrounded him, the military arrived shortly after and avenged him, He was the only death duing this siege, This crazy bastard who during normal seiges would stand on the roof and shoot at bowmen despite none of the burrows being outside, this crazy  son of a bich who chased down packs of unicorns because the elephants were too easy, The crazy bastard who shot a titan down in an open field before it could reach the fort because he wanted a drink from the well. He will be missed.

I haven't been deep enough to see it yet. But I know it's there. This is actually the first time i've found one. I zoomed on it an it shot me down soooo many z levels just to show me blackness. So yes they are in this version. Assuming we are talking about the HFS fun stick that ushers in a rain of clowns.
