General Discussion / Re: The Weiner thread
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:54:49 pm »
This was several days ago, maybe over a week, and I wouldn't even begin to know where to start looking or even when it was exactly said, but I was listening to NPR and I specifically heard mention that someone had contacted (in at least one case) the woman in question and she responded saying the whole thing was consensual. I remember that fact fairly clearly.

I could be wrong, or they could be wrong. I don't know, this is an old source at this point, but I feel that it's enough to say, at least, that it's possible that in one or more of the cases there could have been consent.

No, I don't like that he lied. No I don't like some of the other things have have come out from this case, but really, I think the pictures honestly aren't that big of a deal, and if they hadn't accidentally ended up on twitter, none of this, likely, would have ever surfaced.

I feel I have to correct something here.

The Three worlds system is a very outdated and misused set of terms. In this case, it's being used in a completely wrong way. (Even if you go by Mao's definition, which I'm not.)

The First, Second, Third world definitions came about during the Cold war. First world, included the US, Western Europe and their allies. The second world was the communist led countries, including the Soviet Union and China. The third world was basically everywhere else there was for the first two to fight over, including large portions of South and Central America, the Middle East, Africa as well as most East Asian countries, notably Korea and Vietnam.

While there is some correlation between a third world label and that country being poor, it's not really meant to be an economic term at all. It's entirely political.

*Deep Breath*

You may continue.

I think the point IS to play on mist energy only. You can get a good amount of playing in per day that way if you're careful. Buying more energy should really only be for crafting, IMHO.

General Discussion / Re: Good Fantasy / Sci-Fi / Alt. History Books?

I have to mention Nathan Lowell's books again. Most of them are currently limited to mp3 audiobook format, but don't let that stop you, (especially since those versions are free). The text versions, as they come out, seem to be high quality as well.

Series is called the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper.

First set of books follows one, Ishmael Horatio Wong(sp?) as he rises through the ranks from lowly Quarter Share assisstant steward all the way up to, eventually Owner's share of his own ship.

Second set, that's currently in production of the audiobook format. Is Shaman's tale. Following the comings and goings of a agricultural planet, more closely of a specific fishing village, and even more closely of the shaman of said village and his son. I don't describe it well though.

All of these are available on http://www.podiobooks.com

Thought it might be worth noting that along with a few other free to play MMOs, Spiral Knights is now on steam, with steam implementation. (Your steam friends that play will be automatically added to your in game friends list, if you log in using your steam account)

Also, I figured out how to fix my ATI x1950's problem with this game. Turn down the Catalyst A.I. setting

Love hearing about successful flights almost as much as doing them myself.

Thanks to all, again. I was keeping a close eye on this game. Now I guess I'll keep an even closer eye on it.

My piddly little Valentine rammed up under the nose of a KV. Apparently a Valentine is short enough that a KV can't get the gun down low enough to fire on it from point blank. Personally I only did around 6% damage to it, but I distracted it enough that my team mates were able to flank it and kill it. The enemy was firing on me the whole time, leaving me with less than 50 hitpoints after that little knife fight. I was careful the rest of the match and actually survived though, and we went on to win that one.

If it was even close to say, a more polished SWAT 4 it would be acceptable as a tactical fps. XCOM

*A blank stare appears on your teammate's face.* "YoooURe eeeen mmmmY way, Siiir." *He drops a grenade at your feet.*

SELFEDIT: I don't see why there needs to be any polish. Seems like SWAT 4 would work perfectly with just a reskin of everything.

More polish mostly meaning AI that isn't the pants on heads retards of SWAT 4 :P

The more I think of this idea the more I like it, if they absolutely insist on making XCOM into an FPS. Think about SWAT levels: you can never be sure how many enemies there will be or where as it randomized the maps each time. Just add RPG/strategy elements and permadeath of squad members and it would work well.

And what I was saying was at certain levels of pants on headedness, treachery(in the form of psi control) and idiocy(in the form of bad AI) are indistinguishable.

I'm reading The Blue Lagoon at the moment. Just got done reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Not sure what I'll settle on next as I'm almost done with my current book.

Spoiler: RULES (click to show/hide)

Ugh... way to take all the fun out of it :(

I'm tired of agonizingly slow people on my commute to work!  I want to fly over them!

Nothing says you can't fly over them, you just need a proper license to do so.

I think we've got a few problems already classifying this as an ultralight, assuming the claims are true.
All quotes from http://www.ultralightflying.com/ultralight-vehicle-regulations/ultralight-vehicle-regulations.html

A single person ultralight must:

Quote
Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons

If this thing is as big of a gas guzzler as is said, 5 gallons isn't going to get you a very long flight.

Quote
Is not capable of more than 55 knots (63 mph) calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight;

If it's capable of reaching 173 mph, as claimed, then that's good reason to not classify it as an ultralight.

As for using it as a terror platform, if people don't listen to the regulations...

Quote
* No person may operate any ultralight vehicle in a manner that creates a hazard to other persons or property.

* No person may allow an object to be dropped from an ultralight vehicle if such action creates a hazard to other persons or property.

You've still got this rule:
Quote
Operations Over Congested Areas

No person may operate an ultralight vehicle over any congested area of a city, town or settlement, or over any open-air assembly of persons.

Now, I can't go without saying that waivers can be given and exceptions can be made, but the regulations, at least argue against what some of you, and even the articles, are suggesting.
