General Discussion / Uncontroversial ideas thread
« on: July 26, 2021, 06:27:37 pm »
This thread may only be used to say things which almost everybody agrees with and won't really spark any discussion.
If you accidentally spark an argument (spurred by somebody disagreeing in good faith and not just shitposting in order to break this rule) then you have failed the thread's premise and lose one imaginary untracked point!

You're staring at your phone.
Well, there's not a lot else to do right now.

It's a live news stream. You see a large metropolitan city from above. It's the middle of the day, but there are no signs of life. No cars driving around, no pedestrians, and the insides of the shops are closed.
The newsdrone's camera pans, bringing into view the cause of this: It's like a monitor lizard, except with six legs rather than four, and also it's three stories tall and nearly a kilometer long from nose to tail. Covering its back like scales are huge, jagged boulders.

As the monster moves, it casually knocks down buildings in its path, whipping them with its tail or simply walking through them. You're not overly shocked despite the fact that this city was your home. Such destruction is now a daily occurrence. At least nobody is still in those buildings.

You are a 15-year old girl. Your hair is brown, as are your eyes. You are slightly short for someone your age, and quite thin as well. You've never taken an interest in sports or exercise, which means you're not particularly strong and get tired quickly. Your grades in school are okay. Not great, just okay. You've never had difficulty getting along with your peers, but nor have you ever had a very close friendship. You've never really felt like anything important has happened to you in your entire life, though you have been present for such things. Just in the background.

At the moment, you're sitting next to your dad on a train. The car is crowded with many other refugees, none of whom you know or feel like striking up a conversation with. Who would even want to talk to a stranger in this situation, with their home city being torn apart by a kaiju?
Your father is a tall man, with short brown hair. Maybe a little grey, even though he's not very old. He's pointedly looking away from your phone, showing the live destruction of the city he's lived in since you were born, the very city which your mother died defending.

You keep watching the stream. There's still nothing else to do but watch.
The grey, overcast sky over the city starts to break up and swirl into a spiral. A massive circular green portal opens in the air, and the other reason for the evacuation shows up. An uncountable swarm of insects, flying arachnids, and huge worms descend over the skyline. You see one crab with its back covered in tentacles grind up and devour a whole tree in seconds.
With a roar, the monitor lizard kaiju rears up, preparing for battle. It's no friend to the invaders, either.

Your screen briefly turns white as the kaiju fires a thick beam of geothermal energy from its mouth. Once the camera adjusts to the intense brightness, you see the beam tear through masses of the invaders while also burning molten streaks into buildings and the very earth.

The battle is brief. The kaiju is both more intelligent and stronger than the aliens, and there weren't nearly enough of them to win by superior numbers. However, the fight did do a good job of causing massive damage to the city. It now more resembles a ruined pile of rubble.

Except, now, you see somebody down in that rubble. It seems that whoever is operating the camera drone notices as well, as the camera zooms in close.
He's a boy about your age, with bright cyan hair. He's wearing a huge dark grey coat as well as about 8 belts, and in his hands he holds an impractically long curved sword. It shines bright in the noon sun.

Your heart starts racing, both in surprise and unexpected admiration. You immediately develop a crush on this boy.

He points his sword at the monster and shouts so loudly that even the camera drone hovering high in the air can pick up his voice. Possibly on purpose. Heroes are often showoffs. You're glad for it. This is the main form of entertainment you get.

"My name is Kase Inanari Darwin! I bear Hannarosy, the sword of the Chaos Star, which has felled many beasts in this world and the other! Noble beast, I shall return you to the earth!"

What will you do?

* Keep watching.
* Turn off the stream and sit quietly.
* Something else!

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Beyond Planar: 1/1
« on: April 29, 2021, 03:39:36 am »
The world ended. The material plane shattered, gods fighting in the skies, demons and angels and other things crawling through the cracks and laying siege to the planet.
And nobody knew why. Perhaps not even the gods knew, as they tore down the old.
In desperation, the mightiest of the world's mortals convened, and the archwizards determined what must be done.

A demiplane was constructed. Materials dragged in, people recruited, rescued, abducted from around the globe. Construction, preparation, and finally...
When it was clear that the outside world could not be saved, the demiplane was severed from the known multiverse, and left to drift.

Freed from the doomed world, options are limited. Food and other necessities cannot be conjured with no-where to conjure from. Planar minions cannot be called upon with no plane but this one available. The gods can not, and will not answer pleas for power or help.
As things are, the ark can only delay the inevitable. All aboard will perish, and all will be silent.

Only, it is not empty out here, past the outer planes. There are... beings. The archwizards name them beyonders. They offer deals, deals for power. Power like that of the gods, to create as one chooses. In exchange, life. Souls, amusement, unknowable agendas. If if one were to fail their contract, terrible consequences.

You are a foolish archmage, making deals with unknowable eldritch beings from beyond and playing at being god.
Because that's your only chance at survival.

As an archmage, you're effectively capable of doing the equivalent of a DnD 9th-level spell at will whenever you want. However, that alone will likely not be enough to save you.
To gather more power, you'll need to sign contracts offered by Beyonders, which will grant you Essence, the power of the gods. However, these contracts don't come free.
Certain beyonder might want something as simple as devouring the souls of your followers, but others might have stranger requests. Either way, failing to deliver before the deadline will incur a penalty. This is often, but not always, your very soul. It is recommended that you try to maintain good relations with the beyonders!

General Discussion / I've been unable to update my forum profile
« on: February 21, 2021, 01:40:58 pm »
So, for the past few days I've been unable to change my profile information on the forum, Personal Text, Signature, Avatar etc. When I click the button to update that information, my browser just spends a bunch of time loading before hitting a blank page. This has happened to me a few times before, but lately it's been happening every single time I try, which is pretty annoying since it means I can't change any of that stuff from what it is now.

So, I've been wondering if this effects anybody else.

Title Page reboot required.

The power of soul courses through your titanium heart. A gift from the boundless universe, a reward to your mind, more than the sum of its parts.
Alone, it is not enough. You are not enough. No being can succeed on its own.
You will need friends.

May you retain your soul, your core, your hope.

Roll To Dodge / Revenant
« on: December 08, 2020, 12:00:58 pm »
It has been eight centuries since the Fell Lord, Aieux, wrested all the great energies of undeath from the world and rose to his undeath. For eight centuries, the world feared him as a god, an immortal being who could appear anywhere with a host of dead soldiers, bent on conquering the world and being its king. Or failing that, to drag it into the abyss with him.
Until, that is, a band of brave heroes and adventurers, the Bright Junct, defeated the Fell Lord forever. After overcoming him body, they took his phylactery and cast it into Rending Light, releasing the undead energies contained within...

As for you, you know not of the Bright Junct or their deeds. You awake in a tight, dark space. Memories of your life and death swimming through your skull, if not your head. You may now be dead, but you never truly let go of life, never truly moved on.
And now, something has come to give you a second chance.

DF Suggestions / Ghosts returning with ethereal items
« on: November 29, 2020, 10:49:24 pm »
Over in Official Tileset Discussion people were talking about tiles for ghosts, and possibly having them be visibly clothed as they were when they died. This thread isn't about that issue, but it did inspire me to suggest a possible feature instead!

Basically the idea is that ghosts could appear wearing or holding items associated with them or their death. Maybe a murdered dwarf returns as a ghost wearing ethereal versions of the same bloodstained clothes as when she died. Or maybe they could be holding items which they have an emotional bond to, like a swordsdwarf clinging to his weapon, or the creator of an artifact appearing to hold a copy of it.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Tell me of dead worlds
« on: September 09, 2020, 11:57:40 pm »
I have long thought on bringing back a readjusted version of my Survival God Game, Death Plane. And I've come to a point that I'd like to tap into the internet's creativity.

So the scene is this. What lay before you is the ruined remains of a multiverse. A section of the eternal void cared for and ruled by a pantheon of deities. Those gods either fled or died, leaving their corpses and their untended planes as all that remains.

What might us, omniscient beings, find within these planes? How could these places have evolved over the untold millennia? What remains are there of the greater multiverse's mechanisms, what cosmic plans have been left unfinished and forever broken?

26
This differs somewhat from what I usually do, but I thought I may as well post it and see if people take to it, considering that this sort of thing won't perish a horrible death just because the OP wanders off.

The idea here is something similar to the cooperative worldbuilding threads you may have seen before, where people take turns filling out details about the world. The difference is that here each new detail comes in the form of an archaeologist exploring the aftermath of that world. Each participant takes a turn describing what the archaeologist finds, and what they think it implies about the history of the land. That could be discovering new places, digging up artifacts, cataloging the native flora and fauna, or whatever else you can think of.

I don't feel like coming up with concrete rules for how this goes down which I then have to enforce, I'd rather people just try to have fun and work things out as they come up. However, I will suggest a few guidelines:

Give other people a chance to participate, try to avoid double-posting.
Regardless of what you add, try to retain some sense of mystery. Don't have the archaeologist stumble upon a book which explains the entire history of the world at once, leave room for other people to add.
Try to keep things compatible with past additions. You can present new theories or perspectives, but don't directly contradict previously established facts.
It's my intention that the world that the archaeologist explores is effectively a dead, barren one. Whatever history this land has happened in the distant past, rather than being currently unfolding events. That's just a general guideline, however.

Finally, I humbly request that you remain polite, even through disagreement about the way other people bring the worldbuilding. This is supposed to be a cooperative exercise, after all.

After a long and hard journy, calm waves bring us here; an enexplored, and as-yet unnamed land mass. Looking from the deck of the our ship, the Hare, I could make out tall grey cliffs rising above the waves, with only the barest, hardiest flora visibly clinging to it.
The sea here is calm, and the fresh air invigorating, yet so far, what we've seen of this place, which we have dicovered? It's pretty miserable. Grey, lifeless. A couple strange insects buzz around, but thus far we've not seen a single bird pass us by or any other large animal. The feeling is as if the very ground rejects life.

And yet, that just makes me more curious. The first sign of life is a collection of caves set into the cliffs. Some scattered tools and ruins show that they were at least inhabited at some time. I wonder what we'll find inside?

This is an RTD focused on ""tactical"" gun combat, mostly in close quarters, and featuring "hardly any" elements of eldritch horror. No refunds.

You had fallen on hard times. Very. Hard times. Your past was rapidly catching up to you, as was your debt. You needed something, anything.
But you found no luck. Even with your very specific set of skills, nobody needed you, and nobody would help you. Except for one. A tall man, by the name of Nyarlathotep.
You might have been skeptical of a lone stranger, offering salvation. But he proved... Captivating. This man could work wonders. Do things that defy belief. Things that... shouldn't be. But, you are desperate. Maybe an ally which defies reality is just what you need.

So Nyarlathotep gave you funds, and Nyarlathotep gave you comrades, and Nyarlathotep gave you a target. An old, musty manor in the middle of nowhere, where no witnesses will see, no authority will hear, and no reinforcements will arrive. All you need is the skulls of those who dwell there, and a small idol prized by your client.
When you return, all your problems will be gone, and you will be truly free.

Once, there was a Ball. A grey and colorless sphere of matter, hanging in infinite Darkness.
The ball could Think, but it had nothing to think about. The ball could Feel, but there was nothing to feel.

But from the darkness, twin Winds came. A wind of Joy, of brightness and activity. And a wind of Sadness, of darkness and inactivity.
The winds, being what they are, and possessing Agency, would act upon the ball, for the ball was the only thing to be acted upon.

But, what will the winds do with the ball?

Once every twenty-nine seasons, the great master Aljaxicui hosts a grand fighting tournament. The winner is awarded one wish of their choosing.
This grand display attracts the brave, the powerful, and the foolish from many worlds to test their skill and strength in the ultimate test.

You, having at least one of the three aforementioned qualities, stand before the arena. Maybe it would be more accurate to describe it as an arena-shaped mountain; it is made entirely from stone and silt, is covered in trees, and is of humbling proportion. Apparently, Aljaxicui himself carved it from the mountain which stood here.

Someone hands you a piece of paper. Your first obstacle to joining will be filling out the application form.

You awaken on the floor. From the contact with your face, it would seem to be concrete. Looking up, you see nothing because it is dark.
Squinting, you can make out a faint line of light coming under the bottom of what is apparently a closed large double door.
You hear wind rushing below you, and feel a cold breeze. Is there a hole in here? You should be careful not to fall in.

You hear faint music. From where, you don't know.
