DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The ideal entrance

Yep. That's a mine cart grinder, leading directly into my fort. Its not complete yet, as the rest of the drawbridges are awaiting an iron mine cart to be dumped on them.

At the pull of a lever, the bridge retracts, sending the mine cart flying. The ramp tracks alternate between NS and EW, and create a perpetual motion machine.

I figure if any invaders make it through those mine carts (which, seeing how fast they move, is VERY unlikely) they deserve the chance to be inside the fort.

Thread where I shamelessly stole the idea from: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=114394.0http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=114394.0

Pets though, require extra work. I usually make a 25z drop zone, with a bridge over the pit and a 1x1 pasture. Stick the pets in the pasture, pull a lever... And be sure to never open the bottom of the pit.

My last good entrance was  ThatAussieGuy's magma doorstop. No picture right now, but damn was that thing effective. My current fort has an airlocked depot, that currently has a husk civil war occurring outside of it. Just wish the damn things would walk under the bridge so I could smash them...

The dwarven caravan decided to leave the safety of the depot just as a huskifying cloud passed over the exit.

I now have a husk civil war going on outside my front gate... lovely.

As to the miasma question: a dwarf got trapped in an aquifer on my last fort. From what I saw, he never generated miasma... but vermin would spawn on his corpse and stand on it.

I got rid of it by flooding the offending area with magma, and mined out the resulting obsidian. Noone even remembered who he was.

Blessed are the cheesemakers.

He just migrated to the fort, and gets all secretive all the sudden. Claiming a craftdwarf shop, he demands shells.

In this place, no one can go outside long enough to fish. So we drill a hole into the aquifer, and have some other migrants start pulling turtles out of the aquifer.

How the hell did a turtle get there? I don't know. All I know is there won't be a corpse running around the fort.

3 shells, and this is made.

Hanging rings of shell, bands of shell, no other fancy stuff. At least there is a legendary bone crafter now... and I can have meat added back to our menu, and have some crap fancy trinkets to trade to the caravans.

Oh, and the husk/thrall elimination system has been tested.

Perfect.

Sounds like an access problem to me... Check your ramps, stairs, and burrow assignments to see if they are the cause. (had similar issues myself when I started)

Sinister area, thralling clouds. I unpaused, and right as my miners grab their picks, I get the "a clouds of ferocious dust has appeared!" And its 5 tiles away from my dwarves.

Maybe 30 seconds, then everyone was a thrall.

I saw giant sponge husks and had to add: my recent evil embark, with thralling clouds is nice. What's not nice is the river infested with carp.

Just carp? No. these carp kill thethralls that fall into the water. they aren't thralls, or undead, just carp.

I'm staying away from the river.

As irritating as the dwarf getting boiled alive by magma is.. I usually just draft a nobody from the huddled masses, burrow him, and have them smooth and carve a fortification in a diagonal wall with another job for him upstairs. If he lives, good. If not, a slab is waiting for the memorial to some guy noone knew.

The ones that irritate me the most though,  are when some idiotdecides to go into the immortal housing to grab a rock, opening the door that prevents leaks, and flooding half the stack with magna and smoke from his retarded self frying. Or when someone decides they don't want to run directly into the fort, following the emergency burrow instructions, and runs right into an ambush/zombie/thralling cloud.

New fort, and this happens:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That red "o" is a great horned owl zombie thrall. Those other things are carp.

The carp killed a thrall.

I'm staying the hell away from this river, and its uber-powerful carp.

« on: October 17, 2012, 12:43:44 pm »
I'm going to do it fairly.  No modding.  If !!FUN!! happens and I fail, that's Dwarf Fortress.  It's more important to make the attempt, than to achieve it safely.

Excellent. You can always reclaim! (Unless your site is populated by thralls or husks, that is.)

The Castle of Lungs has decreed that a new settlement be made, in the nearby sinister badlands. Ores are rumored to be rich, and is worth the risk to travel into an evil land. 7 lucky dwarves gather their equipment, and head off to glory.

Calling the settlement Rashkez, or Deathnegated, the dwarves arrive.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A small hole in the ground is dug for shelter, and supplies moved underground. A small milita is equipped with basic gear, and ordered to train near the entrance to the cave.

A flock of ravens flies into a fiendish ash cloud, which thralls them and contaminates them with ash. The ravens attack the pack animals, killing one and turning the other into a thrall.

The thralled animals run into the cave, killing 3 dwarves, thralling another 3, and sending the remaining one (a proto-noble) running into the wilds... Directly into an ash cloud.

Reclaim!

A milita of 2 sworddwarves and 2 axeswarves are given copper gear, and 2 masons are brought along to attempt to take back the fledgling fort.

An ash cloud hovers nearby, and suddenly overwhelms the dwarves, instantly thralling them all in one fell swoop. (Seriously, the ash cloud spawned 5 tiles away, and hit right after I unpaused.)

Reclaim! (again)

Same setup, milita is grabbing their gear when thralls spring from ambush. (An ambush, curse them! x3) Everyone is killed or thralled nearly as fast as before.

I'm starting to think I need to find another place to set up camp.

Well, the hammerdwarf who had to beat her own hand to death threw a tantrum, killed 2 kids and a marksdwarf, then had her arm broken in several places by a comrade. She was taken to her bedroom, where she promptly starved to death, raised as a zombie, and killed all the kids in the bedroom area.

We walled off our living quarters, trapping the horde of zombies inside.

Our weaver has gone stark raving mad.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest of us are trying to pick up the pieces, huddling in the dirt by the farms. We have cobbled together what supplies we could, and are trying to calm everyone down. Our numbers slowly dwindle, as friends and relatives go insane from grief. Babies who lost their mothers are starving and dehydrated, and there is nothing we can do to help them.

Finally, there are just a few of us left... there is nothing for us here any more. We leave behind slabs dedicated to our loved ones, their reanimated corpses trapped within the bedrooms, and take what little supplies we can salvage. We make a wagon, and make an attempt to leave this forsaken place behind us... but the memories will never fade.

Nor will the screams.

((Most. Fun. Ever. Spent a day or so deciding how to deal with this, and it went quite well. Population of 35, with 10 kids/babies, down to 8.  Halls covered in blood, shuffling zombies around every corner, and a massive graveyard.))
