Artificial Difficulty and cheap punches below the belt by the AI.

This shit ruined Homeworld for me.
I fucking loved that game graphics ( especially the Remaster once *fapfapfap* ), lore, those awesome battles and feeling of epic space opera but the single player was absolutely RUINED by that atrocious cheating AI to the point where entire single player mode was pointless.

It was a strategy game where no matter how good of a general/admiral you were you were always FUCKED, enemy ALWAYS had the advantage, more ships, more cash etc to the point where you could actually made some missions impossible to win because you did too good in the previous one.

Its like a complete reversal of anything you should strive to in strategy games - Why should i bother to minimize my casaulties ( BTW im a fucking DYING RACE with only the people on the Mothership left alive so that would kinda made sense to be as good as possible ) if all that will just mean even more enemies the next time ?
Its like level scalling in Oblivion - one retarded idea that ruins the whole fricking game.

I had my first square dance in the tavern.
It was beautiful with 3 musicians on the side and 8 dancers in a 4x4 square in coordinated moves.
A rare display of multi cultural harmony with dwarves, humans, elves, goblins and a single bird woman particilating.

Peace on Earth!   :-*

Disease of multiculturalism spreads even into DF .. :(

Found a nice embark right on the river bank.
Nice looking mountain, a shitload of soil.

Aaaaand also ~50 animals in sight and most of them are hippos, alligators and crocodilles....

I sense some FUN incoming pretty soon.

EDIT : oh and many many carps ..... motherfuckers ..

I can make a tavern and hire mercs in DF ?? How ?
... Or is it some kind of joke i dont get ..
New DF version released December 1. There's stuff like taverns or temples you can build in your fortress, and you regularly get non-dwarf visitors, including human warriors who could decide to stay at your fort.

Im a noob so i will wait for the LNP to update ;) But its nice to know that thx.

Is there a way to add one small anvil to my save ? Sweet jesus i dont want to start over AGAIN, its like my 10th fort in the last 72 hours..
I tend to never bring one and just snag it from the first Caravan. Is there a pressing need for one this second?

I actually discovered that AFTER first caravan left. Not that i would have anything to trade.
Currently im pumping out gold bars as fast as i can ( discovered some pretty rich veins ) and waiting for new caravan ( which is strangely overdue ) but im kinda paranoid that some monster is going to barge in and ruin my little fort.
I have 5 guys in my military but they all have wooden weapons aside from one copper axe and civilian clothing ;(
Just make a tavern and hire whatever mercenaries show up. Save your gold bars for when you actually have an anvil.

Not that it matters anymore since caravan arrived and i had so much gold that i grabbed 10 anvils at once.

Treehuggers caravan of two annoyed me so i ordered my only soldier to attack them.

Militia commander Blaster punched the male elf in the head so hard his head popped off in one shot.

I would spend an absolutely embarrassing amount of time on this game if you removed all the actual game play and just let me dress up the guys in different armors and pin purity seals and laurel wreaths and trophy racks and helmet plumes on them.

In the Grim Darkness of the 41st Millennium, there is only....fashion.

Dat "fashion" ....

On topic, tiles in space 4xes are one of my peeves, but that's due almost entirely to GalCiv II, so I'm willing to consider the possibility that they're not universally bad. After all, I don't consider research or tech descriptions peeves just because they were awful in GalCiv 2.

I suppose the problem with tiles in space 4X games is that they severely downplay the vast volume of space between star systems, at least in GalCiv. Everything floats, static, in a rather cramped "map" of sorts, with systems extremely close to each other, as far as cosmic scales are concerned. Distance is completely abstracted, perhaps too much.

You might want to try the Space Empires series which lpshades this by having interstallar travel occur solely by naturally occuring wormholes  with no actual faster than light or deep space travel per se
GalCiv technically actually does something similar - that is, creating some map feature that is justified by FTL fluff, but in the case of GalCiv it's the tiles themselves.  The tiles don't represent real distances; they represent distances as traveled by the FTL engines, which lose efficiency as they get close to large gravity wells.  Thus, the absolute distance you travel in one arbitrary unit of time (a game turn) varies based on proximity to planets, stars, or the like, and a single tile next to a star is smaller in absolute terms than a tile in deep space.  That makes the map look like one of those Earth maps where they scale country sizes by the measured criteria (like this).  I don't believe they ever actually mention this in-game, however; it's something I learned only in passing online, which makes you wonder why fluff rationalizations for gameplay crunch aren't put anywhere useful.

Distant Worlds and Star Ruler - those games can have settings that make any extrasolar voyage a really long one.
And ofcourse Aurora 4x - since every craft is sublight one, there is more than enough stories about systems so large that voyage to another planet takes centuries :>

I would love to see 4x/grand strategy that would esentially boil down to Aurora 4x with earlier start date, preferably somewhere in the middle 50's with Space Race firing up and A-weapons, computers and stuff starting to make its mark. And then, after 40-50 in game years, after assymetrical wars, rebellions, economic and social changes typical to a game like that, when most games end - it really begins to shine with the discovery of TN elements ( or whatever Handwavium we put there ) and various factions and nations start to colonize our Solar System and other places with piracy, border clashes, slow travel times ( not slow like now but nowhere near Star Trek level of speed ) and realistic battle tactics and weapon ranges ( again like in Aurora 4x ).

Everything ofcourse with autistic level of detail ( im talking about stuff like tracking each individual part of every ship, ground forces to single platoons or even soldiers and stuff like that ), micromanagement of everything and REALLY deep mechanics, HUGE tech tree, economy and shit.

I had that idea when i replayed some modern mods for Darkest Hour. Each of them ends when you reach stuff like anti-satellite weapons, space flight etc and Aurora 4x even on conventional start starts too late for this to work. Plus i feel that this whole "Mankind first steps into the Universe and planetary unification" is really underrepresented in vidya especially strategies.

I've been hankering for a game that allows you to act as a necromancer or commander of undead, whether RTS, TBS or even something along the lines of Diablo 2.

Bonus points for being able to use your enemy's deaths to expand your ever growing army, to the point of becoming an undead singularity of sorts.

Phantasy Caladria - mod for M&B Warband. You can be a necromancer, you can get more soldiers by raising the dead enemies and with bonus you can fight alongside them in real time ;P

Im not talking about permadeath.

Permadeath has its uses, it fits for rougelikes where there is no plot, where gameplay emerges from the actions of player and world reacting to those actions etc.

Im talking about stuff like FREQUENT checkpoints tied with one save slot, no penalties for fucking up, dying or failing some quests, no need for resource conservation, no way to fail.

Look at Shadow of Mordor - you lose NOTHING if you die, you just respawn at the nearest checkpoint, you cant even get careless by not saving for a while and being forced to repeat some portion of the game because you died. Combat system is so trivial, forgiving and extremely easy that you can play without looking at a fucking screen. AI is completely retarded which makes sneaking .... well trivial. Even small stuff like the fact that you cant die by falling from great height because "magic".

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh and by the way, before anyone points that out : i dont care about how justified it is because my hero is "wraith" , "chosen one" or some other crap like that.
Playing something you cant lose is pointless.
