The general happiness of the dwarf also affects the type of strange mood it gets.

To be specific, I meant that minerals can be found near the surface AND deep undergroung. The most precious one lies deep... Very deep...

So, they're basically these moods in which a random (?) dwarf tries to make some legendary artifact item from various materials. It won't do anything else than hauling the stuff it needs to the workshop (needs a specific one usually, q over them to find out what workshop/what ingredients they need) and building it. Once they have the stuff, they start the construction, after which you have a HUGE value artifact that boosts your wealth. It may also be extremely useful (weapons, armor etc.) or completely useless (cat leather drum, for instance). They can't be traded, but you'll get more immigrants and fun. If he/she doesn't get what he/she needs, madness follows after some time. Can be just complete disregard of one's own life, or violent berserks. No cure, and no way to prevent the moods, unless none of your dwarves have crafting-related skills. Hope this helps, and ask more by all means.

Well, to answer a few, minerals can be found near the surface, depending on the embark site. Galen acan be smelted to get lead and silver (20% chance), and silver can be made into good blunt weapons. Trading is done by queuing "move goods to depot" and then selecting what you want to bring for trade. You have toi wait 'til they're hauled there. Dumping is done by pressin k, then moving the cursor over the object and pressing D. Well needs water beneath it (up to 30 z-levels I think) and no floor/other stuff between them. Press s for militia squad order menu. Strange moods will soon be explained.

Well, my current world is quite young, so that's quite possible.

I wish I'll find the "Hidden Fun Stuff" soon. Before that I'm going to find and explore some caverns, since I haven't seen them either yet (the caverns seem to be extra deep in my main embark site). Until then I'll play this little village and see how far I get. Nearly got wiped out by a huge horde of giant badgers, but luckily they just passed my fort.

:( I've never had one. Does this mean my world has no necromancers?

Basically, you have to get your weapons soaked up in a pool of the venom. Just move the barrel to a trade depot without the contents. The venom will be left on the ground, and then you can toss the spears in to coat them. The poison will then enter a creatures bloodstream when a dwarf scores a bleeding wound.

Wow, that sounds pretty neat. Now, if someone could quickly write the stuff I have to add to the raws, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise I'll try to figure it out myself, altough it might take quite a while.

:D Yeah, but on the other hand they can sometimes one-shot an armored gobbo by breaking their skull (I'd guess they stab throught the face hole or something). My dwarves now use GCS poison (purchased on embark, only 3 points per unit and you just need one) coated on their spears, which makes combat more entertaining.

:D Animal abuse is an integral part of the DF experience.

I think that would make it "inside", and my idlers would instantly clean my precious venom away.

So, I decided to play a new fort for a while, so my current megafortress doesn't get boring. I had gotten used to the 40 fps speed of the fortress, which keeps the events on the screen somewhat logical. My new fort runs about 200 fps (even though I have set the caps to my favourite speed) which is really irritating, since a giant wolverine spawning to the other end of the map runs to my village center in about two seconds. I have to pause all the time, just to see what the hell is happening at the moment. How do I get the game to respect my max fps cap?
