Other Games / Re: Spore

Bastards.
This EA we are talking about, that's like calling the sea damp.

I say it's probably fair to call everything wrong with Spore EA's fault. The quickness of the "expansions" only proves that: Spore was almost certainly on the development track to be released far, far later--possibly around the same time as Dwarf Fortress 1.0. But EA took one look at the fanbase and hype currently around, and decided to push developers to finish up the core they had, and shove it out the door as-is.

The result? A game that's halfway between a crippled demo and the full game we were promised, at full game prices. And they will release expansions to gradually build it up into the full amount of gameplay we were expecting to get out of it... only we have to pay extra for those, ha ha.

I place the blame 99% on EA for pulling this, and 1% on Maxis for rolling over and letting them (financial pressure goes a long way, you know).

How many people here even own a legal copy of Spore?

Id love to share my creations! such as my extensive supply of Space Faring creatures!

I'm on the Sporepedia as Alfadorfox. Have been since I downloaded the trial, then bought the Creature Creator.

I bought Spore because I wanted to support Maxis, even though it made my teeth grind to know that I was inevitably also supporting EA by doing so. When would I resort to piracy for Spore? ...Why, when my number of installs runs out, of course, because I don't want to deal with the bullshit they undoubtedly have set up to harass people into buying a second copy of the game. All I'd need would be a version that has no DRM and no install key needed, assuming the connection to Sporepedia is separate and requires only that you have a valid game copy running and a valid login (I've had people with their own accounts log in on my laptop's install with no problems, though it still pops up as my saved galaxy there, so this seems to be the case.) rather than verifying the DRM there too.

I kinda wish they would come over to my place and demand the game. I don't own any firearms, but I do keep a large steel crowbar near the front door. Forget shoving Spore down their throats, lets see if they can pick 133% damage out of their gums. ;)

Covering my ass: I'm not actually threatening violence against anybody; any legal experts should read this as metaphorical in the sense of Dwarf Fortress, in that the most violent thing I might possibly do is create two characters in the game and have one attack the other with a modded weapon. Really. I'm being so sincere right now.

We were shown pictures of people prancing about on the surface of the moon. What we got was a ride on the Vomit Comet. Disappointing for those who wanted a lunar vacation, but I'm still having loads of fun enjoying what I've got. Glass is half full, in my opinion, and despite the hype I don't really expect full glasses from the games industry anymore. Complaining about the suck isn't going to give us better games.

DF General Discussion / Re: Can you 'undiscover' history?
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:08:11 pm »
A nice way of doing it would be that, in Legends mode, you can see any history known by any civilization, but in Adventurer and Fortress mode, you could only see history known by your parent civilization. That way, to make an adventurer with player fortress history hidden, you'd only have to make an adventurer from a different civ.

Of course, you'd see the occasional (or ubiquitous, depending) engraving or decoration relating to interactions between the two civilizations, especially if they're close enough for trade.

Once we have more general corpse-dropping, we can have phoenixes drop eggs on death that hatch into themselves all over again, possessed horrors turning into harmless villagers when defeated, and steel mechanical monstrosities that, when hacked apart, release the woodland creatures contained within. (This is an image of a hedgehog in sapphire. The hedgehog is surrounded by the bronze collosi. The hedgehog is laughing. Sega is withering away.)

Regarding size: keep in mind that hunting wild pigs was dangerous.  They should definitely not be small.

And they should have more attacks. Run you over and stomp ya FLAT, they will.

I once had The Sword of Death.

Wish the current grammar allowed for "Sword of Inevitable Justice." ;D

Or "Scrapyard of Insufferable Arrogance?"

At work so I can't check the dictionary, but I think we might be missing some of those words. Which is sad.

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerooooooooooooy!  ;D

At least Leeroy Jenkins showed up often enough to have the opportunity to run into the eggs. XD (On that note, I just got my UBRS key last week, having gotten tired of having the unadorned seal in my bank forever. Now I'll have the full key...in the same slot. Agh.)

Smart NPCs?? Ive never seen "smart" NPCs in any games so far to be honest...

I dunno, most NPCs are far more intelligent than most PCs

Hah...maybe in WoW!  ;D
DF dwarfs are more intelligent than most of WoW, ironically.

True; if you set !!fire!! to 3/5ths of our current raid group, they STILL wouldn't tell the raid leader they weren't going to be around for the scheduled raid time, they'd just run away to grab another silk left sock.

stopped fell moods from occurring if the fortress race does not drop a corpse

Seriously... It's a pretty in-depth game that needs that particular fix... :)

Because Toady knows there will be mods, and does not want them to be able to break the game without trying very hard. ;D

Hmm...build a two tile long alcove in the wall, assign a booze stockpile to the end, then when the Dwarf goes to take a drink...wall him in.
Bonus points if you manage to brew Amontillado.  XD
::) For the love of Armok, Montresor...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Silliest Artifacts

Not the silliest, but the most macabre of all artifacts I've ever had was a horse bone bin. It menaced with spikes of horse bone. Carved on it is an image of flies. Carved on it is an image of purring maggots.

Created by a small dwarven girl, probably about 5 years old.

She creates a box made of bone, decorated with images of flies and maggots?!  :o

"I *need* a pony!!" "...what, you thought I wanted one to ride?"

In my country we have a saying that badly translated means "If you give people a hand, they will want your arm". I'm sure there are equivalents in other places, because it's so true.
by us we say that with the small finger :D

When people do that to us, we use the middle finger.  ;D
