This is an image of a dwarf and rhesus macaques in dwarf leather. The dwarf is vomiting. The rhesus macaques are laughing.

Alternative fuel source! No more angering the elves with woodcutting, now we just create the most heinous miasma in the Foul Continents of Stinking!

Actually, what we're after is automating enough of the management so that we can get to what the Fortress Mode is really about: Creating and growing a fortress! Otherwise, past a certain fortress size you'd be devoting all your time to micromanaging the fortress just to keep it afloat, and none to expanding and sending out armies and suchlike.

Brittle materials would be useless for armor, and their use for single material weapons would be limited to unarmored squishy foes...

...but what about the obsidian sword type weapons? What about embedding sharpened hunks of glass, obsidian, ceramic, or other sharp-but-brittle materials, in a sturdy but soft base material like wood? You could make wicked sick traps with green glass shards embedded in a wooden disc for your large serrated discs.

Also, do want leaded glass!

Not as soon as you enter the area, but I seem to recall volcanic eruptions as random events were on the menu for future versions...

Yes, but if it is set in stone to draw water UP, then it's either vertical or at an angle. Pumping in the opposite direction would be unnecessary--you could do it by just opening a gate through. And pumping UP from the opposite direction would be impossible since the tube isn't positioned right for that.

So unless your screw in a tube is horizontal and uses siphoning to get water up from either side, you're screwed.

It's a platinum totem. Fell would involve a REAL dwarf skull--or in this case human. (In DF, you don't need fell moods to make human skull totems.   :D )
[EDIT: Whoops, sorry...looks like the skull is really still there; it's just encircled with bands of platinum, studded with diamond, and menaces with spikes of diamond.]

You really don't want to get fire near your fortress' coal mines!

Also, this isn't a story, but it reminded me of DF: The longest place name in the U.S. and sixth longest in the world: Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg "Englishmen at Manchaug territory at the meeting and fishing place at the boundary."

DF General Discussion / Real life DF stories

I don't know if there's a single thread for these, though I've seen them in other threads. Real-life news stories that sound like something out of Dwarf Fortress.

First up: A house built over a cyanide pit in China collapses, killing 9. If ever we can build beds on top of bridges over the magma river, this will happen!
