Also @crazysheep I'm sorry, I just got all excited thinking I was cool to point out some anecdotal nerdyness.
It's cool :)

OT: Somehow my friends who have seen me play DF know straightaway that it's a game. They only ask what it's about, and some of them have played similar ASCII graphic-type games.

From what I've seen, if the local fauna and your neighbours are tricky to deal with, you're best off turtling underground. Minimal stuff out on top, and maximum stuff hidden away underneath the surface, just like an iceberg.

Since I prefer locations with low evil but reasonable amounts of savagery (e.g. Giant Mosquitoes or undead hordes), I favour aboveground forts with enough area to roam around hunting stuff, while keeping everything simple enough to defend.

Use the manager to forge steel bars
That might work. Brb, will update if that works.

Things to check:

1. The stock screen. Check the ingredients for steel to mak sure that they are available for use in smelting and have not been dumped, forbidden, used in buildings, or sundry other things that could render them unavailable.

2. Your magma source. Make sure that you have magma with an average depth of 4/7 beneath the smelter. If one of the tiles has less than that, the magma is shifting around and the smelter is occasionally unpowered so it'll list jobs at some times and not at others.

3. Your stockpile. Look to see if a bin(s) were recently placed in a bar stockpile. If so, one or more of the necessary materials might be designated for a Place in Bin job and won't be available until that task is finished.

4. Jobs listing. Check any construction projects to make sure that you didn't use of these materials by accident.
1. Hmmm I need to check that.
2. I built right over the magma sea, so there's no chance of the magma disappearing below 4/7. Also, unpowered magma smelters give a message saying that it's unpowered, which is not the case here.
3. All available bins are full so far, and I've double checked the jobs screen - nothing is being hauled around.
4. I'm not using metal bars for anything else right now, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Update: using the manager worked. None of the bars required for smelting steel bars were forbidden btw.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So.. stockpiles.

Am trying to figure out stockpiles for making steel. I seem to have all the bars (coke, iron, pig iron, chalk), but none of the magma smelters allow the dwarves to make steel. What could I possibly be doing wrong, and how do I fix this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had

Briefly...

Needing a good amount of soap for injuries...

Have lots of buckets
Have lots of ash
Have lots of lye
Have lots of tallow

CanNOT make soap.  For five in game years. At. All.

Discover that all of the buckets of lye are being put in rock pots in food stockpiles.

...face palm ...
What version are you running?  This was fixed recently.
Eh.. lye falls under "Misc. Liquid" in 0.34.10 food stockpiles.

Bad generalisation on my part :/

Å is currently used to represent figurines.. that might make for some interesting deity discussions.

A librarian seriously thought I was hacking the school network when I played DF one day on the school computers.
Something similar happened to a friend of mine when he was using the MS-DOS prompt. What is it about big, blocky, fixed-width fonts that are so frightening to people who don't understand computers? ???

Unrelated, but the second result for "asciiphobia" when entered in google is a bay12 thread. I thought that was amusing.
Because hackers are always portrayed as using the command prompt to hack secure networks in movies. Always.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 27, 2012, 08:50:52 pm »
I just lost quite a bit of progress to a crash, caused by what I think is a murderous little bug.

I was going about my managerial duties, when I noticed a couple dwarves running back and forth in a hallway, or rather zig-zagging back and forth like bees, hauling finished goods bins. Their minds appear to have been broken, and they simply kept buzzing around in that hallway like they couldn't figure out where to go, with their job stating "store item in bin." I did the only logical thing when one encounters dwarves failing at hauling an object: forbid the object they're hauling. However, when I unpaused, the game crashed before even a tick had gone by.

Anybody else had a similar problem? I'm still using 34.09, out of shear laziness to do all the work to update.
I haven't got that problem, but someone posted a while back about this bug.

Apparently the elves have been busy in the history of the fort of Gearedsoldier. The general leading the humans is an elf. The general leading the dwarves is an elf too. And the queen of the elves is a drunk.

The animal trainers in Gearedsoldier have started taming ravens. So far, we've learnt a few facts about taming them :)

Update: We're now generally familiar with ravens!

It's the fetish for building from the left.  I always assume that's a religious thing.
Heck, they do a lot of things from the left. Especially channeling out empty spaces. It must be a religious thing with the dwarves D:

anvils. think about it for a second. kind of like the question of the chicken or the egg.
Mood, duh.

Urist McUrdwarf had made Metalforge the Paradox of Origin, a cat bone anvil!
I can imagine the conversation:
"Urist, what IS that?" "I dunno, maybe we can make metal things with that?" "Let's try!"

As you can see, the dwarven spirit of industry and adventure may have led to that anvil being the mother of all anvils.
I pose that Dwarves have an innate understanding of how to do things, and simply need the resources to do so.

Urist McFey - GIVE ME YOUR SHINY ROCKS! I MUST MAKE AN ANVIL!
Urist McBookkeeper - What's an anvil?
Urist McFey - I DON'T KNOW. BUT IT GOES IN A FORGE.

~meanwhile~

*You have found a series of magma tubes*

WE MUST MAKE MAGMA FORGES
BUT WE MUST HAVE ANVILS FIRST
WAIT FOR URIST MCFEY TO FINISH

Mining out my very first piece of candy! :D

That made me a nervous wreak :P
Smoothing stone and then carving fortifications into it helps :)
