Nah.  Treat this as an opportunity to hone your defensive strategy and tactics  You already have a ton of adult dwarfs, you just need to use them sparingly so the children have time to grow and replace them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Combating skill rust in the medical staff?
« on: April 02, 2013, 12:42:25 pm »
You could try doing it by making an extremely tiny meeting area and leaving a lot of dogs or other non-grazing animals running free, so they go there and feel crowded and start lashing out randomly at the other creatures around them.  Might be a little easier than trying to arrange mining "accidents".

I think the best was when somebody screwed something up and generated an inside-out world with the surface down low and the hidden fun stuff on top.  But that is a fairly oddball set of legends you have there.

As if a speedster would ever associate with a ghuol.  There are better ways to recover hp and mp. :P

The rare Spectral Pickle Factory has appeared in the Plains today!

Crap, I missed it, it's rollover now.  Oh well, I don't need it for the novelty, and a MAS is a better version which I already have.  I don't use strictly combat familiars much anyway, I'm usually using either a Crimbo P.R.E.S.S.I.E. or one of my elemental gravy fairies (typically sleazy, I get the familiar-specific equipment without having to go out of my way for it).  Right now I'm using a Black Cat, which is horrible in every way.

Username there is ShaggyShaggs.

I recommend a dance-off to determine who drives since multiple folks want to, then.

I can drive, I'm just not licensed to.  I'll do it if nobody else wants to.

Stay out of the way of the weird alien fuckers who seem intent on dispatching the basehead, but do be reminded to check pockets and carried items to ensure capability to deal with future problems before getting on the bus.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, this should be enough to overcome any hardships in acquiring dinner.  Get on the bus, ignore the television, and watch the basehead attack unfold.

Life Advice / Re: Are zombies cannibals?
« on: April 01, 2013, 04:08:57 pm »
On another note, is this life advice? You thinking about becoming a zombie and the moral implications thereof?

I'm working on becoming a zombie myself, and you can, too.  While the metamorphosis is not yet complete, at this point I feel confident in saying that we are not necessarily cannibals, but an individual zombie who chooses to be a cannibal will be a tenacious and effective cannibal indeed.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why isn't dwarf fortress open-source?
« on: April 01, 2013, 03:33:07 pm »
How do you figure making the source code available would increase everyone's respect for him?  It's not as if all projects are improved by releasing the source code, some just aren't appropriate to create that way and get worse if you try.  Nor is doing it wrong on purpose because people keep asking you to a big respect winner, if anything it loses respect from people who value integrity and courage.  Are you just thinking Open Source Everything At Any Cost zealots == Everybody, or at least Everybody Who Matters?  They aren't.

At that point I think you might be better off forgetting what you know, and just approaching DF as an entirely new game.

Mayor just mandated the production of rock salt mugs.

I think the place is getting to him.

Oh, and this guy absolutely detests bats. Turns out the engraver I ordered to beautify his bedroom a bit loves them...

Did you get any engravings of the mayor surrounded by bats and looking terrified?  Those are always fun when they turn up in a personal bedroom.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My confession....
« on: April 01, 2013, 12:27:00 am »
I have a confession too, since i noticed quite a few players treat their starting 7 like royalty. I treat them no differently than any other dwarves and if a migrant comes that has better skills and the same job early enough then one of the starting 7 may even end up as a peasant.
The starting 7 have no promises of wealth. No promises of safety. They are pioneers to a hostile world creating an outpost for the glory of Dwarvenkind. The only thing they know is they must strike the Earth and make their fortunes by bolt, plow or hook ere Winter comes and the natives get hungry.

For every outpost that grows to a city, how many are lost? Abandoned? Destroyed?

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress, short, sturdy creatures fond of drink and industry. Your journey has ended and your legends shall begin.

This is why we praise them. This is why they are The Seven.

I would think the dwarfs more deserving of praise are those first few migrants who trickle in after your fortress becomes such a deadly hellhole that no migrants dare come at all for several years.  Those guys have some promises, they're all bad, and they screw their balls on tight and come anyway.

Life Advice / Re: Life's being horrible.
« on: March 31, 2013, 03:23:49 am »
Maybe you need something more meaningful in your life.  It sounds like the things you do, and the things you want to do, are all pretty superficial.  Not judging here, it happens to a lot of people, me included.  Unfortunately, when nothing you do or experience really matters, it can be difficult to self-motivate, and to take pleasure or even notice when the small things go right.  Perhaps the solution is to get involved in something that's important to you, and where your action or inaction makes a significant impact.

I don't mean to suggest you put yourself into a position where you will quite literally die if you don't get your act together (although that certainly got me out of my own rut), but perhaps you could volunteer your time to a cause you feel strongly about, or teach yourself a new skill that you think will be important to your quality of life in the future, or take care of an abused animal, something like that.  Find something that you care about and that you can do, something for which it doesn't matter what your crappy family thinks, whether the teachers are working, or how many friends you make for doing it, all that matters is your own performance and the results... then get out and do it.  Do it so hard and persistently that you end up every day banged up, sore, and completely exhausted.  If nothing else it should start you eating and sleeping more effectively.  You'll have to, just to recover the energy you're expending to whatever it is you're doing.
