DF Suggestions / Re: Theaters

Could have musical performances as well using all those instruments which just sit in finished goods stockpile.

Wouldn't think it would be THAT hard to set up subject matter and thoughts generated. Could be pretty much copied across from how engravings are done.

Actually in the times that this game was based on, most people could deal with it. Some could not.  ATM most people can't deal. some can.. eventually. Death was pretty common place till 1700-1800s, and u either dealt with it or died yourself.

Also think there should be other options to chucking a tantrum when one is depressed, such as over eating, getting a non-permanent insanity like effect such as melancholy for a month, or bedridden, where the dwarf will not work, or even move, and must be fed by other dwarfs.

Its also wierd how punching another dwarf so hard their rib cracks feels great, but get no satisfaction from beating up a goblin.

I would love to see vast bottemless pits and chasms return into the game. Will they ever be returning?

DF Suggestions / Re: New Mechanical Trap Ideas

Pretty sure you can do the first 2 with pressure plates and weapon traps. weapon traps can be set to activate via pressure plate rather than being stepped on, but I think the arrows shoot up.

Pitfall traps can be kind of set up with pressure plates, bridges and supports.

            W---W
top level BBPBB      B = bridge P = pressure plate - = empty space W = wall
            W---W

                 FFFFF
Bottom level FFSFF  F =floor and S = support. Fill this level with lava for bonus lethality.
                 FFFFF

Link the pressure plate to both bridges and the support. When the pressure plate activates it will cause a cave in and anything standing on the plate of the bridges near by will fall to the level below, filled with what ever you want. Just make sure your dwarves can rebuild the support later.

Snare trap sounds good, but with the how easy it is to make wooden cages and their super strength, why would you ever want to?

DF Suggestions / Giant Trees

I seem it strange that a world that is at least 1050 is litted with trees that are only around 1m~2m high (1z level). It would be pretty cool that in the wilder area's, there could be bigger if not massive trees spanning multiple Z levels and having thicker than 1 tile trunks.

DF Suggestions / Re: Make leather armour useful
« on: December 26, 2013, 01:07:52 pm »
I don't think you are using the armour system to its maximum potential. A single breastplate isn't meant to be the complete package at the moment. A "fully" clothed dwarf will be wearing 3 mail shirts and a breastplate and 6 cloaks on top of that.

Leather is best used for making cloaks. I think a step in the right direction would be to remove the shaped tag from leather as it would be quite possible to wear leather underneath a breastplate as I'm sure many a knight did.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Armor

For all your armor info.

Breast plates can get expensive and actually cover less area than leather armour. 1-2 mail shirts leather armour and low boots might be a more economical route for archers etc.

It should also be noted, that when untrained, dwarfs in armour preform badly in heavy armour. If the dwarf has little armour skills and is going up against real enemies (ie, your not trying to train armour at that time), they might be better off in leather due to the massive speed penalties of untrained dwarves in heavy armour.

Hi there, returning to DF after awhile and this time im back with 64bit wind 7 which is a change. Big Fan of DT and very grateful for what you guys do.

ATM I cant seem to get DT to work though. After dumping the new ini files into the memory_layouts folder (which is the only change im making from a fresh download from code.google) and running DF i get an error complaining the version isn't correct.
It says the checksum of df(v0.34.09) has a check sum of 0xf36bac23.

Is there some part of the update process I'm skipping? or is it just bugged for me?

Edit: Problem solved! If I run Dwarf Fortress in Admin mode (Was already running DT in Admin mode) it all works OK!
Non-Admin mode must change somethings in Dwarf Fortress coding :S

I can't seem to find Minecarts or Wheelbarrows on any menus. Is it a bug or am I doing it wrong?
