Other Games / Into the Stars: Kickstarting the last hope of humanity
« on: January 06, 2015, 02:58:12 am »
Found this on kickstarter, pretty much looks like a 3D FTL. Made by a 4 person indie team comprised of people from DICE and Capcom, including two leads from DICE. Also has a soundtrack done by Jack Wall, who did the score for Mass Effect 2 (and I think one as well). Basically, humanity is fleeing their world which was invaded by aliens, you are in command of the ship and you have to get to a destination. There's random events, volley based combat, etc.

"Take the role of Captain as you explore a massive solar system in search of a new home for humanity. Outfit your ship, select your crew and set off on a journey where you must scavenge resources, shelter civilians and outrun a hostile alien force in order to survive."

So again, basically FTL in 3D.

It has 29 days left, and has $25,062 pledged of $85,000 goal. Kickstarter's not my thing, but it looked like something some people here would be interested in. Anyways, here's a link to the kickstarter.

Welcome...

To DF 2014

About a year and a half ago, Mastahcheese had a wonderful idea for the upcoming release; to make a succession world, as opposed to just a single fort. A thread was made, and hype ensued.

The time has come, now that you can "retire" forts, this is a possibility. To have a succession world, passed on between players. To have multiple player made forts in a single world. To have adventurers move between them. This my friends, is the future of community games.

So, us intrepid Bay Watchers have decided upon the rules for this community game, and they are as follows:

As for turn lengths, we decided on 96 hours. I figure 24 hours is a reasonable enough time to let me know if you can or can't take your turn, with another 24 hours extension to start your turn if you ask for it. You have to post on the thread starting your turn, or you will be skipped. That way we can still keep it fast, and have turnover every 5 days. In addition, it's not necessary to play the full 96 hours, but I'm assuming most people will want to.

Next, world gen parameters. We decided on a short history, and a large world, with a medium amount of civs, sites, savagery etc.

When it comes to rules, the usual apply. Don't go out of your way to destroy the fort, or to destroy the projects of other players. In traditional DF community game style, players are expected to write a summary of events from their turn. You have to post some sort of update within two days, or you're skipped. This can be in the form of a journal, a log of events, or whatever your heart desires. When you're done with your turn, retire your fort/adventurer, then zip up the save file and post the link here.

What you do in your turn is up to you, so long as you're done within the time limit. Want to build a massive megaproject? Go for it. Want to build some caves for other adventurers to navigate through? Go for it. Want to be an adventurer and take over a city? Go for it, so long as whatever you do is within the above rules.

Interesting/Intriguing/Cool Things/Facts You Learned Today!

Post them, and let others be enlightened and share in your little tidbits of knowledge!

I'll start with an incredibly boring and useless fact that I just found today, and it interested me. Apparently, the section of the 401 that runs through Toronto is the busiest highway in the world with over 500,000 cars on it some days and an average daily traffic of 450,000. It sure feels like it some days.

Life Advice / Buying a Laptop for a 55 Year Old
« on: July 12, 2014, 09:11:37 pm »
Basically, my dad is fulfilling his life's dream and retiring on his 55th birthday in a couple weeks. However, he's worked for a company for 37 years, and when he retires, he won't have a company laptop or phone. So, he's looking into buying a laptop, and he asked to to figure out the particulars for him.

So I came here, because I don't really know where to look to find cheap, simple laptops.

Basically, all I'm looking for is something that:

1. Is running Windows 7. 8 would be just way too confusing for him after using normal Windows for 20 odd years.
2. Has WiFi, and possible Bluetooth functionality.
3. Isn't outrageously expensive.
4. Is possibly decently durable as far as laptops go?

And that's about it. I've never really bought a laptop before, the one I'm using now I bought secondhand off a cousin of mine, and besides that I've only ever owned desktops that I built. Also, brick and mortar stores are bad because apparently they only sell Windows 8.1 laptops now. Any idea where to start looking, or even better, any suggestions for laptops?

What it says on the tin.
Basically, going through sales on Steam, I happened to notice that everything Tomb Raider ever was on sale. In there, was a ridiculous amount of DLC for the 2013 Tomb Raider game. The first thing that struck my eye was DLC for single guns. That's right, pay us more money to help complete the game you already paid us for.

I posted this discovery of mine in the "Steam Sales" thread, and it was pointed out to me that this was the general trend that the gaming industry had been taking. Selling you a "full" game, then nickle and diming you for endless waves of dreck that expands the game in such a minor way as to not be noticeable. Now, I don't play many "mainstream" games, or many newer games at that. But, I'd actually taken notice of this a little bit back when a friend of mine wanted me to play the new Splinter Cell game with him on his Xbox. While equipping our characters, I noticed that some of the guns that were locked had monetary requirements to use. Yeah, they put it in the game, but locked it until you paid more for it.

But little was I aware that worse was to come.

Behold:

That's right kids, for the low low price of a dollar, you can get that much closer to having a complete game. That price of $59.99 you paid? Oh, that was just to get access to the ability to buy the rest of the game you paid full price for. Yes, buying skills, the wave of the future. And today, it's only $0.19, that's 81% off something that should be included in the game! Wow! Such a deal!

Yeah, as is obvious, this really annoyed me. It seems so insane to me that a developer will charge you extra for a damn skill, a central component of most games. Does anyone remember the days of expansion packs where you would be given almost a complete other game for your money? Or you know, just having a full game on release. Now, I'm not saying all DLC is horrible, but this method of flooding people with pointless, low price DLC is a bit insane.

So what are your DLC woes and complaints? What are your thoughts on this frightening direction that the video game industry is going in? Or just your thoughts on the future of the gaming industry? Just want to vent about really dumb DLC? This is the place. Keep it civil between each other, but feel free to voice your true thoughts on the nickle and dime method of DLC, and the future of the gaming industry as a whole.

Creative Projects / Glloyd Makes A Map! -From the Darkness, A Map!
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:29:02 pm »
Well hey there Creative Projects Board.

Introduction

I've been playing a game called "Space Station 13" far too much recently, and thus, to help placate my addiction, I have decided to make an entirely new station map. But, I know what you're wondering, "Glloyd, wtf. This is Bay12. Go to the Space Station 13 forums to do that!" Well, as a matter of fact, there is no single Space Station 13 forum. It's divided into many different branches and I really don't play any of them much...

Except for one!

The server I play on is a private Bay 12 server called "Urist McStation. We're small, and don't have our own forums. Also, although I'm making this map for the playerbase, I'm also making it for myself as well, to see what I can do with the horrible mapping software that is DreamMaker. Although, this is a big undertaking, and to that end, I will be accepting help from interested parties, and I will accept feedback from anyone who cares enough to politely contribute.

Information (Generously copied from the Urist McStation thread in Other Games mostly)

Space Station 13...
...is an RPG running on the BYOND game making engine, simulating life aboard Nanotrasen Space Station 13.  Engineers, doctors, botanists, scientists, security, the captain, and many more live on Space Station 13, keeping everyone happy and healthy.  Until the !!FUN!! starts, anyway.

Play...
...as one of the denizens of Space Station 13, performing your assigned duties to keep the station running and productive, but...one of you may be a traitor!  Perform your secret corporate espionage, and escape!   Or perhaps you're a changeling, disguised to absorb DNA from the unsuspecting humans aboard the station!  There are also revolution, cult, and many more possible modes, including secret, where nobody knows what mode is being played.

Urist McStation...
...is running a custom fork of the tgstation code base.  Several members of the SS13 community expressed a desire for a server that wasn't completely clownish, while not being too hardcore on requiring roleplay.  Roleplay is encouraged on Urist McStation, but players will not be punished for minor slips of character.  For example, medical hacking doors is fine, security performing major surgery is frowned upon.

This Thread...
...is not a place to discuss SS13. It is a place to talk about the map I am making, and politely offer advice/feedback/help. There are other places to discuss the game, and argue about it. Here is not one. To be specific, no game discussion, especially when related to bans. This thread is for mapping. If you want to post things you like about other station maps, that's fine. Argueing about which map is better? Not cool.

I am...
...a university student majoring in history. Maps have always interested me extremely, to the point where in some games, (Think older RTS titles with included map editors,) I would spend more time making cool maps then actually playing the game. When I started playing SS13, I found the Dream Maker functions, and instantly lost hours upon hours to it. It went hand in hand with my interest in coding.

I'll be posting updates as the map progresses, and hold polls to see what people think, and we'll see how horribly this turns out...

I will accept help though! This project is not only for me, but for the community. I intend to set up a Git repo, so prospective mappers can contribute to it as well. Until then, wish me luck!

Creative Projects / My Acoustic Band: Against The Tide
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:38:36 pm »
Well hey there B12.

My contribution to the Creative Projects thread is my own Creative Project, my band Against The Tide.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The band consists of me, the vocalist, lyricist, guitarist, pianist, etc. and my friend Jake who is our recording technician, lead guitarist and back-up singer. We're an Acoustic Rock/Experimental Acoustic band from Ontario in Canada.

We've been writing and recording off and on since 2010, but we've really started to get serious about it over the last year. We've released a single recently, and have been recording songs for our upcoming debut album.

We have been told that we sound like Against Me, Neverending White Lights, Eddie Vedder, Anthony Green and The John Butler Trio. Our influences include Rise Against, Alexisonfire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Against Me, Circa Survive, The John Butler Trio and Pink Floyd.

So, if it sounds interesting to you, check us out, we're on a bunch of different sites:

Soundcloud

Reverbnation

The Youtubes

Bandcamp

and many more, (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Lastfm, all that fun stuff) most of which you can get to from those sites.

So check us out if you want, and let me know what you think, and if you like us, follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook, we appreciate your support! Be friendly, but also honest, one thing with being a small indie band is that it's hard to get a lot of good feedback, so that's why i'm coming here, to the best indie community out there. And if you guys like it, I'll upload fun stuff such as lyrics, song ideas/musings and links to new stuff we're doing!

Thanks B12  :)
