I want to dive through the code, and maybe make a way for the thermoelectric generator to be made without admin intervention. It'd definitely add something for bored engineers to do on slow rounds, considering how long it takes to set up and the amount of space it needs. All I'd really need to do is to add in a way for the circulators and generator to be made, maybe create a circuit board for them. It's an idea.

Code-diving is a rather interesting adventure, you can find the occasional gem that allows you to do long-forgotten tricks, such as the ones I uncovered lately with stamps and showers which, although not world-shattering, are rather fun to play with occasionally. Good thing you reminded me, I'll go code-snorkeling later on today, unless I fall asleep beforehand u_u.

That aside, I'm slowly accumulating my ninety-five theses to be nailed to my computer with things we really really should add. Thermo, BS12 robust health system, Pirate mode (when someone makes the ship) and a couple of other things come to mind.

YES, I personally love the BS12 health system. In my mind, an ideal server would have the code of BS12, but the gamemodes and ruleset of /tg/. That is the ultimate server. And yes, code diving is quite fun, there's some interesting stuff hidden in there. It's nice to do when I have spare time. Which is how I figured out that the thermo generator still works.

Away missions!

I would also like to see us play a day or two with the MetaStation map or any other map. We should also give the standard tg map with the tunnel extensions a try.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. AWAY MISSIONS ARE FULLY POSSIBLE. BUT until (or if) we fully branch from /tg/, I doubt it will happen. There are a few people here (myself included) who know how to activate the gateway, and I would LOVE to take it upon myself to finish some of the unfinished away maps, but I don't think it will be implemented on our server until (or if) we branch from /tg/.

Should be relatively easy to make a ThermoGen Crate for QM to order.

That takes away the point of it. It'd be better to have something to make from scratch IMO.

The link was fixed. For convenience, I'll post it again here.
I'm glad the fort is actually playable now, let's hope we can get a decent momentum again. If there aren't a bunch more people who want to join, I'd like to take another stab at overseeing somewhere down the line. It'd be nice to play a turn where there isn't only one dwarf for half of it, haha.

((OOC: I hate to double post, but here it is:))

Journal of Glloyd, Dwarven Survivor:

Summer draws to a close, with the new arrivals beginning to settle in. Thus begins a new era for the fort. I have instructed the others to start removing the corpses from the fort, as to make it livable again. It appears that they have made me the de facto leader. Despite my wounds, I carry on, showing the other dwarves through the blood soaked passages of Mirroredfreezes.

24th Galena

What is this? Some foul Kobold has stolen Zegosthin... And I find myself not caring at all. There is so much work to be done that a missing artifact means little... In other news, I ordered some dwarves to drain out the lower levels. Hopefully, they can be put back into service once cleared.

Limestone

A human caravan arrived today, reminding me that we should build a new depot before our dwarven brethren come. But wait, on the horizon... Is that?

A small goblin raiding party! Most likely stragglers from the siege, looking for shelter from the cold. We shall give them no quarter!

I ordered my men to form a squad and charge at the approaching goblins. We would show these goblins that Mirroredfreezes is still something to be reckoned with!

Late Limestone/Early Sandstone

*Blood is smeared on some of the pages, and the writing seems shakier then previous entries*

We managed to beat off those goblins... But our victory came at a cost... We have two more critically wounded, and another one dead... I myself am confined to bed due to multiple wounds on my body... Luckily, if you can call it fucking luck more doomed migrants have arrived at the fort... It seems we have a large surplus of food and alcohol, so the priority is moving all the dead... There are so many... They line the halls, their blood is tracked on our shoes... Will this place ever be clean?

Late Sandstone

A caravan arrived today, christening our newly built depot... I told some slacker to go trade with them, and he sold some of the dead's clothes for some equipment we needed... We probably got the worse end of the deal, but at least we're still alive, unlike the rest...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Opal

I am feeling much better, well enough to get out of bed. It appears our dwarves have finally cleared out almost all of the corpses and refuse. There are two massive piles on the surface. At least the cold will keep them from rotting even more...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Late Obsidian

As the winter draws to a close, so does my time leading these people. Mentally and physically, I cannot do it. They shall elect a new leader from amongst themselves. My time leading these people is up. I shall remain in the fort though, and do my best to help it keep going. To leave... To leave would be to admit the goblins won, and to give up all we fought for. As my last act, I ordered those dogs I found in the lower decks to be slaughtered. Some can stay alive, but the others... We need their meat...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

((OOC: And that is all. Stocks are fine, there's a ton of food and alcohol. What needs to be done is rebuilding stuff destroyed, slabbing and coffining ghosts, setting up traps, getting wood somehow, and just generally surviving. Beds are needed, and a lot of the areas and rooms I set up were temporary fixes. Also, a lot of bins are needed. There are piles of clothes everywhere. Good stuff to ship out and trade. And that's all. Save is here Good luck! You'll need it...))

EDIT: THAT LINK LEADS NOWHERE. My internet messed up. I'll try uploading it again later.
REEDIT: It works now. Good luck!

Since the vampire doesn't have anything better to do, you should have him dig out enough of a space to build a mason's workshop and a craftdwarf's workshop, enable the proper labors, and have him make slabs for the angriest of the ghosts. Just in case, y'know. I'm fairly certain that once he gets ghostified, the rest of the ghosts will go for the other dwarves.

Already done. That's the first thing I did when I sealed him up. He's slabbed about six ghosts so far.

Still, SOP for contact with an alien species without biohazard suit should be medbay check. Maybe the beast spreads airborne contaminants, or something.

Though I doubt many people would follow it.
Ideally.  Nanotrasen employees are not particularly known for following protocol.
Do you know what confuses me? Why Captains don't sentence people to public floggings for some crimes. I mean, what else is The Chain of Command for, anyway?

It's for disciplining someone... in the chest/head.

Journal of Glloyd, Dwarven Survivor

As the days wear on, I begin to lose all hope of ever seeing another dwarf. The trolls infesting the fortress continue to stalk the hallways, searching for another victim.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can only hope that their next victim won't be me... I stay alive mainly by slaughtering and eating the abundance of puppies found in the lower corridors of the fortress... I can only hope they keep breeding at this rate. I don't know how much longer I can last like this. Everyday, I have to fight the urge to run at the trolls and let myself be slaughtered. But it would be oh so easy to end it all...

Journal of Dobar the Almighty

I can smell my victory in the air... The dwarves of Mirroredfreezes will all burn. I have etched the faces of those whose corpses I shall devour onto the stones in my little fortress. I shall feast upon their rotten bodies, and they shall all BOW DOWN BEFORE ME...
*There's a gap in the writing, and the next section appears to be written in blood*
GAH, even in death they taunt me. WE SHALL SEE WHO IS THE TRUE LORD OF THIS PLACE. Those foul ghosts took my arm, but I shall come back. I must wall myself up, regather my strength and return to kill them all! THEY WILL ALL BURN.

Journal of Glloyd, Dwarven Survivor

Weeks are turning into months... I have come to accept my fate. There is no way to escape this hell.

Wait, what is that sound?!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I could hear loud roars coming from the hallway, along with screams... It sounded like... No, it couldn't be... My brethren have returned to save me! I charged down the halls, stopping briefly to pick up a weapon. Screaming at the top of my lungs, what a sight I must've been. Covered in blood, my own filth and vomit and troll ichor, I ran screaming towards the trolls, axe raised high above my head. Screaming bloody murder, I began chopping at the trolls with complete abandon. Months of pent up rage released in one single burst...

Standing in the midst of the troll corpses, we realized that one more assault was needed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We made the charge. Screaming at the top of our lungs, the ten of us remaining poured into the nobles' rooms. After a brief, but brutal fight, we took inventory of the wounded. I was bruised and beaten, and had a gash along my arm, but I could still walk. Two others were no so lucky, and one... Well, he didn't have to worry about not being able to walk. The others seemed to look up to me, and I quickly came to the realization that it was time to get to work...

((OOC: So that takes us to late summer. We got a wave of 13 or so migrants. A few of them died fighting the trolls and a few were crippled. I re dwarfed for the sake of the narrative. I just need to finish writing the next part, then I shall post it tomorrow or tonight, along with the save. Expect more pictures and less writing in the next part. Also, it got pretty close there for a bit. The ghosts ripped one of the vampire's arms off, right before the migrants came. The vamp's still alive, just walled up with a pick in some little room.))

On a three person sandbox round last night, we managed to get the thermoelectric generator working, after some trouble with the hot loop. Despite that, IT WORKED. Albeit for a brief time until we accidentally lit ourselves on fire...

Anyways! Here it is, in all it's pipey glory.

Yes, that is the escape wing. The hot loop was located inside R&D, we reinforced the floor.

I put the thermoelectric generator into practice on my own server, and it actually worked. Again, you need to spawn the 2 circulators and the actual generator, but if you get a proper cold loop and hot loop going, it *should* work.

I'd love to see the thermo engine at work.  And aren't you an admin, Glloyd?

Why yes, yes I am. Also a coder/mapper, so I feel like given some time I could hack this thing together

So this kind of relates to the experiments with heat transfer pipes. My internet's been down the last couple of days, so in some spare time I had, I went diving through the code to see if the old thermoelectric generator could work on the current server. Everything I looked at suggested it could, you'd just need an admin to spawn the actual generator and the two side pieces (I forget the exact names, they look like turbines). I *think* everything else could be done by hand. It'd be worth trying one time on a sandbox round, so you could get the CO2 needed, and not make everyone hate you.

3073
Alright, I have finished my turn. I will be posting the final two entries tonight and tomorrow. Just as a heads up,

THE FORTRESS IS NOW PLAYABLE

Seriously, it's true.

Happy birthday Toady! Here's to many more.
