DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How have you been dying recently?
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:19:27 pm »
This was a while ago, but memorable.

I was on a pretty good streak taking quests and killing monsters. I charge into a monster's cave, a tiny, dark hole in the wall. I laugh when I see its weapon.  A carving fork. This should be easy.

I charge the monster but he gets to me first and attacks.  Boom, I get stabbed in the chest, and he punctures my lung. Gasping for air and coughing up blood, there's nothing I can do as the monster raises its arm to attack again.  It brings the fork down on my head and shatters my skull, sending fragments into my brain.

Just goes to show, you should never judge a book by its cover in this game.

DF General Discussion / Re: Music to Fortress too
« on: March 18, 2010, 01:58:47 pm »
I like listening to Classical music when I play games of this nature. Something about Vivaldi...

Wait... Vivaldi?????

I thoroughly apologize for resurrecting this crusty dead ancient thread, but I just had to comment. Seriously, I hope nobody is building their fortress to fucking Vivaldi!

Choose something grand, like Mahler or Webern... or even Wagner.

Should be meaty! Not limp and milknosed like

As much as it pains me to say this (as an early music person), I have to agree.  Vivaldi doesn't really fit the DF mold.  However, one shouldn't rule out all Baroque (not classical :D) or even renaissance music.

Some that immediately pop to mind.

Monteverdi Vespers of 1610

Purcell-Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary <-Haven't listened to the whole thing, but this movement is very DF-ish

DF General Discussion / Re: Last stands of epic Perportion

So here's the story.  My fort, Faithfulaxe, had collapsed in an orgy of violence and destruction, with the only remaining sane dwarf being my champion sworddwarf.  Sure enough, a goblin ambush appeared, a squad of marksgoblins.  I figured that their bolts would easily take out my remain soldier.  How wrong I was.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Novella
« on: January 08, 2010, 12:28:24 am »
I've had the idea in my head of a Dwarf Fortress story that's in a similar vein to the book Pillars of the Earth and the sequel, World Without End, about the founding of a fortress and the story as that fortress grows.  I highly recommend the book, which is a story about a town in medieval England that takes place over a period of about 30 years.  It's an epic tale with plenty of intrigue.  I've always imagined my idea as a comic though, and since I'm not much of an artist it never really went anywhere.

Aaaag...Age of empires...why...

I think that was the first game i ever played and of course i loved it at the time but have you guys revisited it recently? It really is so bad...(IMO)

AoE I or II, because I recently started playing multiplayer on AoE II with a friend of mine, and it's been a blast.  I can't speak for AoE I though...

I voted!

Just curious, what did everybody else choose to round off their top five?  For me they were:

2. Half Life 2
3. Portal
4. Age of Empires II
5. Il-2 Sturmovik

Although in retrospect, I should have chose Rome: Total War intead of AoEII.

7
Huzzah for nightmare mode!

Also, there's some weirdness with the dwarf profiles.  There appears to be some repeats, and one of them is sideways.

8
I'll take the 5th place if possible.  This'll be my first succession game, is there anything I should know (besides what's in the OP)?

I'll be a male farmer.

*designate some channels to be dug*

2 minutes later: a cavern has collapsed!
 Urist Mc Miner has died

and you better believe that he channeled himself onto an island, which fell and he punched through 10 floors of solid rock, before splattering all over the ground floor

Or if you do what I've done. Twice:

a section of the cavern has collapsed!
Urist Mc Miner has died
Urist Mc Soldier has died
Urist Mc Carpenter has died
Urist Mc Mason has died
Urist Mc Child has died

when those ten layers happen to be inhabited by dwarves and a 5x5 square of stone smashes through them.

I forgot what it meant, but my favorite dwarf name was Limul Saramoltar.  I always thought it was a pretty awesome name.

Faithfulaxe had gone down the tubes after a brutal goblin invasion, the population had plummeted from nearly 200 to less than ten when a crossbow-wielding goblin ambush showed up.  The only one who had managed to keep it together was my champion, so I figured, "why not", and ordered him to face down the ambush, figuring he'd go down in a blaze of glory.  I was wrong, he charged through the hail of bolts coming his way and effortlessly cut trough the entire group.

I got it all on tape too.

DF General Discussion / Re: Official Dwarf Fortress Music Project [Mod]

Well I think the aforementioned procedurally generated soundtrack is out of our grasp for the moment, but even something as simple as a playlist of original songs that you can play in the background I think would be cool.  So when the siege comes you can go to the siege music on itunes (or WMP or whatever).

Maybe I can write a collection dedicated to Urist, but the first part is actually writing the songs.  Its just an idea right now, but hopefully it will lead somewhere.

Actually I think I will try to write some music, most likely something simple like a four part chorale or something.  The thing is though, I want to like lyrics as well and I want to use the dwarfish (?) vocabulary.  Does the language have any syntax rules or do we just have the words?  How do suggest I do this?

Oh, and I am planning on writing an Ode to Urist.

Yeah, Audacity is a great, free program that lets you do all sorts of stuff with audio.

DF Suggestions / Re: Named weapons
« on: January 25, 2009, 08:45:40 pm »
I like the idea of having weapons that were involved in important events being tracked through the world creation process.  Although I think that within the game world they should take on a more ceremonial purpose if they don't have any special powers.  So if a character used a certain sword to kill a king of a rival faction or a particularly nasty megabeast it might be on display in the castle or given to a player as a gift, not so much for its quality but for the sentimental value.  Maybe certain weapons could act as relics and be said to heal people or something of that nature (although because the weapon is an ordinary sword, it wouldn't actually do anything).  People would come from all over to see the weapon that Urist McDwarf used to kill the demon So and so.

It would be interesting so see this with other objects as well.  Like the bones of a heroic dwarf being put on display and being said to have special powers.  Things like this would flesh out the religious aspects a bit, where the bodies of dwarven saints would be popular tourist attractions.
