Vampires have had a little too much style as of late. While I don't support the idea of them being bloodthirsty killing machines, I'd rather they be more hindrance than help.

Have the Dwarves go with the Spartan approach. Give them a bunch of javelins that they can use to throw at the enemy before closing in to engage in melee. Even if it doesn't kill a heavily armored enemy it might still bruise them or knock them down.

I just put all of my war animals in a pasture placed strategically at the end of my Hallway of Horror.

I can understand limb reattachment and organ replacement... But why on zombies?

Yeah, a vampire should only kill their victim if the victim wakes up partway through the act, lest their victim go on to identify them.

DF Suggestions / Tastes Like Sober

Vampire Dwarves currently have a problem in that they gain negative thoughts from being sober due to the fact that they can't drink alcohol anymore. I believe that this shouldn't be a problem so long as the Dwarves they drink from are not sober themselves, as alcohol can be found in the blood.

They might even gain positive thoughts if they drink from a dwarf that has recently imbibed the vampire's favorite beverage. Vampires might even be inclined to only drink from Dwarves who they have a favorite drink in common with. If the Vampire's favorite drink was Strawberry Wine when they were living, the Vampire might be more frequently inclined to drink from Dwarves whose favorite drink is also Strawberry Wine.

You'd think that Dwarven blood would be a high enough proof to satisfy a Vampire's need for alcohol.

Smelt the gold down. Make expensive stuff out of it. Then export it. Trade it for clay, and use that to decorate your fort.

The last five forts I've played had a noticeable lack of titans showing up. My most recent fort has had three titans, two weremonitor human children, two forgotten beasts, a giant eagle, and a necromancer siege. All of this in the space of about five months.

I like method two, but instead of sharing the dorfs, would it be possible to split the dorfs down the middle so that one play controls half and the other players controls the other half? Since both players only have access to half the dorfs they normally would, it would require a great deal more cooperation on their part in order to work together and build the fort.

Or maybe they could split the embark site in half and build two forts side by side. That way there exists potential for some mutual antagonistic behavior.

Maybe there's gold doubloons buried underneath the mountain and your miners are pirates in disguise?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are crossbows still overpowered?
« on: June 03, 2012, 01:01:27 am »
I've never really had problems with training my archers. My favorite method of training them is to capture goblins with cage traps. I throw them into a pit and position my Marksdwarves on the edge so that they fire on the goblins automatically. It's a lot more reliable than setting up archery targets and waiting for them to get around to practicing.

Cross training Marksdwarves with the Hammer skills is quite common. Crossbows don't make for very good melee weapons, but it'll help your Marksdwarves defend themselves if they run out of bolts and are forced into a melee confrontation.

Then again my Marksdwarves never leave their tower, which I've filled to the brim with war hounds and ammo stockpiles. I've never felt the need to do any cross training because anything that lays siege on my fort never makes it passed the traps and rabid hounds.

Found a pool of magma. Been trying to pipe it up to the surface, but so far haven't had any luck with setting up the power system. For some reason I can't figure out how to send power down a z-level.

These humans continue to impress me. Though their beards are light, they fight with great prowess. Ever since their caravan has arrived, we have had several ambushes by goblin soldiers and they have fought off and killed every last one of them.

Our Masons and Mechanics have been working diligently on improving fortress defenses since the last siege. The tower for our Marksdwarves has been built upon and expanded to include a stockpile for our bolts and an archery range for idle practice. A secondary tunnel has been carved out of the stone and filled with plenty of traps. Unlike the other entrance, it has no gate to seal it off. Instead it leads directly into the war dog pit and is in perfect view of the barracks where all of our soldiers spend their downtime. Those unfortunate enough survive the traps will be receiving a face full of fang and steel.

Black Bears have been spotted wandering on the very edges of our territory. Traps have been placed along the outer perimeter in the hopes of securing a mating pair. No luck so far, though we have managed to secure a Raven Woman. Don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I hear the humans like to bake ravens into a pie. Perhaps I will try that. If it does not please our palate, the least we could do is trade it to the humans for more wares.

The last batch of migrants we received included a Skilled Siege Operator, so plans have been made for expanding the outer fortifications that we may include a siege tower.
