you can use "t" to look at the lever and see how many mechanisms it has, it would have 1 for just a lever or 2 for if it was linked.

or you could just pull the lever and see what happens...

do they show up if you point at the "All" category and then use "s" to search for them?

easiest solution: make big prepared food stockpiles that don't take barrels. make sure no other food stockpiles take prepared food

then at the depot, press "g" to move goods, then while selecting "All", use "s" to search for "roast", and you can order the roasts to be brought to the depot. (assuming you only cook lavish meals).
Although I do this too, there's a main issue of space and hauling dozens of roasts to the depot, the reason I think the OP wants to use metal barrels to store food is he wants to efficiently store his roasts, move them quickly to the depot for trade and to trade with elves that otherwise would get touchy if you try to sell them roasts on a wooden barrel...

Elves bring enough stuff that you might want, maybe 2000*. If you're lucky. That's one or two roasts. You can get everything the elfs brought that isn't junk.

Even a big dwarf or human caravan would probably only bring about 30,000* of good stuff. That's about 30 roasts max.

It's not worth doing a lot of extra work to avoid dwarfs having to haul 10 to 30 roasts around. Plus if you have prepared food storage with no barrels, you can easily see how many roasts you have stockpiled.

normal squad training, or sending the squad out to kill wildlife, will train discipline.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Gives Water...no wounds?

Have you got any animals in cages? Maybe they were getting the water?

Have you tried pressing "z" from the main window then going to "health" to see who is wounded?

don't you have to build the depot first, then check the access screen?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Traps?
« on: August 19, 2014, 05:22:21 pm »
You can build weapon traps, and cage traps. Get a mechanic to build a mechanic's workshop and then make some mechanisms.

For a cage trap, a carpenter can make cages. For a weapon trap, he can make giant trap weapons, like spiky balls.

Then you use b-T-c to build a cage trap, or b-T-w to build a weapon trap.

Otherwise you can look on the wiki and no doubt you will find more complicated ways to make traps.

well why did you buy them? you could have bought booze! a lot of stuff caravans bring is junk and you shouldn't buy it.

you could mod in a reaction to turn them into sausages or something.

If you channel down to the expected miasma squares from the surface, then they will be outside and won't have miasma. You can build floors to block the holes after the light has got down there once.

They shouldn't even get inside if you have a pasture with some dogs near the entrance.

You can put a barracks near the entrance and have some squads training there.. Then if the thief gets close to the soldiers, he will run away. No need to chase him, he will run at high speed off the map.

She's the queen, so you should try to make her happy. Or she can have a nasty accident. It's up to you.

As noted, cook is turned off for all seeds so as not to consume them.  So I don't know where my seeds are going.  I brought over 100 with me from the start.  Plots are also rotated seasonally.

Turn off cooking for the food, then they can't cook plump helmets for example. They won't starve, because they can eat them raw. Which gives you seeds. Or they can brew them, which gives you seeds. Just don't let them cook them, or you don't get seeds.

Later on  you will have hundreds of seeds, then you let them cook plump helmets again.

Meanwhile, put a Meat and fish and eggs and cheese custom food stockpile right next to your kitchen. Get your butcher to kill a bunch of animals, and your dwarfs will have masterful tallow roasts to eat very soon.

you need to press "z" on the dwarf then press "h" for health, and look at what problems they have and what treatment is needed. then if it says something like "needs splint" but you don't have any splints, you make some splints.
