DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How can I disable vampires?
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:47:49 am »
Chop their legs off?

Drinking the blood of things you killed is always good. Well, almost alway, don't worry about it.
I was playing once, did that "drink the blood spatters off yourself so you don't die of thirst" trick, as recommended. Suddenly, I was a vampire. "Ohhh that's right, I was fighting a vampire a couple of days ago..."

I got this error message when trying to load a fort:

"One of the compressed files on disk has errors in it.  Restore from backup if you are able."

I think it was caused by the hard disk being full when saving the game. In case that helps somebody else.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Broker wont go to depot

You can make a burrow of where the depot is, and assign the broker to that burrow. Remember to take him out of the burrow when he is finished trading.

He's not completely useless. He helps to make sure that your booze, food, and clothing stockpiles don't overflow by consuming that stuff. Also if a dwarf gets mad, they can go and yell at him which makes them happier.

Yeah, I understand that.  That's not what toomanysecrets did though.

I'm trying to get people to understand that active/training marksdwarves will not engage in archery practice and people keep arguing with me that their's do, while simultaneously admitting that their 10 dwarf squad has a minimum of 7 or 2 or some other number less than 10.

Either they're not understanding what I'm saying or they don't understand how the minimum attendence number works, or both.
You can tell if they are active/training. Here's an example:

I look around at my archery targets. At one of them is a green helmet dwarf, who is called Kogan. He is doing Archery Practice. He is a helmet, so he is active, right? He is green so he is a marksdwarf, right?

Kogan is in squad 6. So I go to the military Positions screen, which is the default military screen. Then I move the cursor down the list of squads to squad 6, and then move right to the list of squad 6 soldiers. I move the cursor down to Kogan, he is the 6th soldier in squad 6. I look at the top right of the screen, and it says: "Schedule: Train".

So there we have it. An active soldier with the Train order is doing Archery Practice.

I think you can.

wouldn't a roof be more practical though? or you don't want to miss out on the rain?

I already built a roof over inside the wall, but flying monsters can still fly over it. I think the problem was that I was trying to build an up-down stair on the top level and it wouldn't let me. So I'm going to build a wall that goes all the way to the top of the skyyyyy!!!

68
You can't build a wall right up to the top of the sky can you?

69
I'm pretty sure this doesn't work. If you build a floor above the ground on the edge of the map, monsters can spawn on that floor. I built a floor 2 wide along the north edge, and I think I saw giant opossums and porcupine men that must have spawned up there. They can't fly.

So I think I'll put a support under that floor, cut off the catwalks, and then dump the floor on some goblins when they turn up. How far does cave-in dust travel?

3)To use local ore and to train a weapsonsmith, I am making silver weapons for export.  I know value is determined by material value and by craftsmanship, but are all weapons worth the same base amount?  I couldn't find a speadsheet on the wiki.  If they are different, which is most valuable?
I think they are worth different amounts. To maximize the value, you should carefully look at the trade agreement with the liaison to see which things they want to buy. They can easily pay double for something they want, so that's what you probably should sell them.

Adventurers dying is not unusual. You might like to try finding some small wild animals, and attacking them until you get good at fighting. Don't immediately try to fight soldiers, and don't try to fight large animals like yaks for example. Soldiers will rapidly kill you, and large animals will knock you down and kill you.

You have to start off slow. Throwing things is a good idea, and sneaking around is another good idea.

You can put hatches over stairs. Hatches are like doors, except they go vertically instead of horizontally. Simply lock the hatches, and nothing will get through. Probably. If you want to be sure nothing can get through, build walls and floors so there is no path to the scary stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why you no carry your weapons?

You have to plan ahead, give them plenty of time to get equipped.

It takes them a long time to wander around and pick up all their equipment. I allow a month or two for them to get that done. Before they have picked it all up, they sometimes turn up for training with 1 sock, a mitten, and a spear, stuff like that. If you send them to fight before they are equipped, they'll get into fistfights and stuff.
