Forum Games and Roleplaying / Re: Star-Com: Sudden Danger [SG]
« on: June 26, 2016, 05:37:15 am »
Well, that's peachy. Our second manned mission, stumbles into a warzone. The Committee is really going to like that one, trust me.

First Action; Give Commands to get our Boys out in one piece
Second Action: Press that red button next to us, which sends all our soldiers running into the security room.
(Or shout "Red Alarm, every soldier to security" through the intercom. Whatever we actually have down there.)

Now, we don't know what is actually going on here. It looks like a humanitarian disaster, kinda like wiping a village off a map. Thing is, we don't know who did what, or their ideologies. So let's not have our first contact devolve into a war. Between random villagers on another planet, and the security of our nation - and subordinates -, there isn't much wriggling room.

For the First Action, I see two choices;

Option A: Have one of our men step forward, give a salute to match their non-hostile demeanor, and try diplomacy.
Pro - no hostile actions on our part, and possibly positive communication with an - at least - Industrial Alien Nation
Con - great risk for that soldier

Option B: Have our men throw two flashbangs at last notice, and scramble for the gate.
Pro - No truly hostile action on our part, against an - at least - Industrial Alien Nation
Con - Might go south really quick, as they might think it an attack, and call their cavalry air support back in.
Paranoia - Seen Mars Attacks? Yeah, right, I severly doubt it could end that bad - still, our flashbangs are fine-tuned to humans, and might actually cripple them. Or, the reverse, not be enough to do their intended job.

Yeah. The pick of a bad lot. Always fun. Not sure which I actually like less. A better idea, would be more than welcome. ;3

+1 to TopHats proposal
Recruits? Equip your Tinfoil-Hats! You'r' gonna need dem for dis.
As for "upgrading", I think we could do so for the quarters - just build "half" of them for now, and build the rest of the partitions and stuff later on. This, I strongly presume, won't be the case for a nuclear reactor, which should only be a modular one, instead of "the real deal" as we commonly know it. Any retrofit-messing with a module, tends to cost more than a new one, especially if it is about a sensitive product like a nuclear reactor.

If we can get any space-suits, and or the reason as for why D2, the non-atmosphere planet with ruins took such a toll on our robotic scout, I'd actually favour that one for exploration. You can't mess up with ruins, as much as you could do with a "living" planet - granted, that their possibly existing security system is also nonfunctional. Which we should doubt. Slow exploration would be key, if we value the lives of our subordinates. If, right?

Still, the prospect of investigating the ruins of a society which presumeably made active use of these gates, is far more attractive than exploring a random terrestrial planet. My best guess for the failure, would either be the mentiond possiblity of a still-functional defence system on D2, some sort of EMP waves of yet unknown nature, or far worse, that radiaton simply fried the robot. If it is the later, we actually can forget about exploring it with any non-isulated robot, as a robot clearing chernobyl, fried after a single day or so. Now, that disaster was bad enough in and off itself (a horryfing, but good read, actually), but if we add up such damage on electronics by radiation to a single minute, and a modern robot, then any soldier we send there for even a single second, is dead meat, quite possibly puking out their organs, if they even live long enough to do so (here is hope they wouldnt. poor souls.). Well, we also could have had bad luck, and sent it just in time for a solar-storm, unhindered by any sort of magnetic field, but that theory also holds its own risks.

I'll also put down a vote against D4. It is an island surrounded by a big body of water - salt or freshwater, isn't that important. Know those old maps with all kinds of beasts in the waters? Now, on earth we know them to be wrong for the most part, or not bent on aggression like the kraken, but anything could linger in those depths, or wait for passerbys to venture unto the shores. We may have more or less conquered our own eco-system, but alien ones could be far more deadly (Actually, the reverse could also hold true. We could live on a "death planet", with most other planets a cakewalk. Thing is, all this is pure speculation right now. Speculation, doesn't give security, and tends to be wrong.)

Now, for the obligatory "I might seem crazy, but its actually you that are" post. Remember, tinfoil-hats are your friend in this, any any other scenario!
Truth be told, all these planets could prove a biohazard for our own, or any pathogens we bring there, could prove the same to them. I strongly suggest that our future explorers are decked out in some sort of "combat abc space suits". Now, I know all of this sounds way, way paranoid - thing is, it really isn't. The chances for these things happening, might be astronomical low, but if we allow them to unfold, we are in deep shit. Several people dead, and department closed, is actually one of the better outcomes in these scenarios.

Quote from: We
(You also keep in mind that along with all that stuff, you should officially name your division, name the base, name the Device, and name its dialer unit.)

We, which would be Sir Christopher Wellsborough, have decided on the following;
First off, be so kind as to read everything in a british voice from now on. Thank you.
Our division, is named IRW - Interplanetary Research Ward. Self-explanatory. What we will do here, is obviously interplanetary research. Well, actually it is closer to interstellar, or possibly even intergalactical, but as we are only moving on planets this technically still correct title, will do. As for the addition of "ward", that is us pretending that this undertaking has any vestiges of security attached to it. Which it has not.

Actually, speaking of security. Is the device sheltered in a quarantined area? Do we have the same for our scouts-to-be?
We let all moon astronauts sit in quarantine for a full month, and that was for a satellite with no real atmosphere, nor indications of life. Judging by the fact that this device was found here on earth, it stands to reason that it might connect to other "terrestrial" planets. Let's expect the worst, as in every returned person and item being able to carry an unknown, alien pathogen, quite possibly the worst pandemic we have yet to see. Wouldn't do for us to accidentally wipe out humanity, would it? The commitee should know this, yet only gave 65 people to this mission. The Lunacy of it, is mind-boggling.

Back on track. We will keep the name of our base simple, as Waypoint. Enough to give a nod to those in the know, and vague enough that no-one can arbitrarily guess just what our little show here is all about. That is, unless they know our division name. Well, not like security was ever going to be our strong suit anways.

The device itself, will be labelled as what it is. A Warpgate. Warping space into a tunnel, which enables FTL travel, is already sci-fi enough. No need to be fancy here.
The dialler unit, which arguably connects us with other planets, is The Switchboard.

Well, that much for my submission. Should the bit about contamination be "too realistic", it would be better to hand-waive it. Else it might stay to be a real concern, with bouts of interplanetary infection arguable even more probable than aliens invading us after first contact. Actually, that just might turn out to be their reaction after we bring our germs to them. An alien disease wiping out people left and right, is after all a great motivator for war. Might want to disinfect the boys before and after any gate activity. Doubt it would make for an interesting mechanic, so handwaiving this, is actually my recommendation.

Oh, and do forgive me the quips. Sir Wellsborough might be a bit of a cynic - or is it comedy? He himself, might not know either! How very british of him.
Actually, also forgive me for making a british character. I guess?

Truth be told, ALL magic is EVIL
We would do good to also kill the other evil one afterwards, though for now going after the presumably slightly more evil green-magic-user, is a good idea.

*chack-chack-chack*
The sound of a bolt repeatedly clicking on an empty magazine sounds out, causing Anfisa to send a furious gaze at her rifle.
With a shrieking growl of "Useless Flintlock!", the harpy throws her weapon sliding on the ground, and takes to the sky.

Her cry of, "The rightmost is mine!", sounds over the field of battle, her wings wildly flapping to gain enough height for an aerial attack. If any of her previous anger remains, her face doesn't show it, drawn into a gleeful grimace instead.

As the harpy flexes her claws in anticipation, she adds a descending; "Mind your aim, hear me?" from overhead. Seems she is not very trusting in the aim of her compatriots. Go figure.

Anfisa performs a Diving Charge (Reckless Attack) on Maggarote 5
(Should Ferratus finish the job before her, I guess she will scoop up the corpse instead, to let her claws do her worst on that.)

Our name is Gluttony, because forsaken Naga bloodlines tend to be edgy like that. We bear the Mark of the Corpse and carry the Encyclopedia of Lost Spirits. We opted to Leave Immediately for the Liberty Woods, figuring such criminals would most likely take an isolated route. And, well, also because we like swamps and somewhat racistly figured maybe the human was heading back to its own kind.

Here's to a clean tie. I guess? ;3

((I must've confused hands with feet somehow. Probably didn't wake up completely at the time.))
[[Eh, don't mind it, don't mind it. Not like any of us are "that" closely interested in the character sheets of others. At least / especially not at the beginning.]]

"δόξα στον Άρη!"
Wildly firing unto the maggarotes, the harpy is seemingly enjoying herself.
"Αχαχαχα!."
Al~right. Scratch that. Clearly enjoying herself.

What? What is that? You want to know what she says? All-right-o. Just 'caus it's you.
"Glory unto Ares", is the first line. What the second one is, well, that one should actually be clear from the context.

173
((I'm assuming the third M1 is for Ferratus. The Harpy has clawed hands, after all. Those don't grab things like guns well.))
[[Actually, I'd wager you presume wrong - she only has has claws on her feet. Charging in on a mass of free-fire targets, would also be a bad, bad idea. Safe maybe for an armour, like your Ferratus ;3]]

Currently fanning herself as she hears Hartman's command, the harpy swiftly lines up for her gun, all smiles despite the jog visibly having taken a toll on her. During the later, she actually might have let loose some greek curses about land-squirming, though most of them were clearly said under her wheezing, if not at times non-existant breath.

"Well Now we're talkin'."
Recieving her rifle with a grin, Anfisa walks into position, before firing wildly at the middle of the maggarotes.

Anfisa fires quick bursts of fire at, eh, well, maggarote ~4

Is it time for us to kick some Nazi ass?

Actually, we needn't beat that dead horse again. The great depression and its aftermath, made multiple countries weak enough that coups were made on the old government. To name a few; Mussolini in Italy, Vargas in Brazil, the Military Clique in Japan, Hitler in Germany, Metaxas in Greece, Stalin in the Soviet Union, Franco in Spain.

Either way, as we are playing in a fantasy+ "world", the allies and the axis - or their actions - may very well be different from history.

Woah, woah, woah! I just asked for a destination—aren't you getting a little bit ahead of yourselves?

...You aren't upset about that "experienced tacticians" comment, are you?
First point, no not really. You are just slow. And we will choose that attack either way, I'd wager.
Second point, well we certainly aren't as petty as others, but we might just care enought to mess with you ;3

On another note - having those bushes in an upper layer / having the pokemon under them, is a real nice touch.

As hinted by our unspeakable benefactor, Vine Whip won't do us much good against Bugs.

While having regeneration from Leech Seed, is not a bad thing, our first priority should be to reduce the number of our opponents. If all three of them surround us, having that bit of regeneration won't do us any good. To the same end, wasting a Growl on a single weedle, isn't in our favour either.

TLDR; Tackle is still our best option. Tackle the Weedle on C3!

I could use the original tiles, but I'd need to
  • download a tileset
  • resize the tiles to something that would work well
  • lament upon realizing that the tiles work really poorly with party sprites
I will definitely at least try the actual tiles at some point, though.

As for sprites, I like the Gen II ones because 10 seconds in paint gives me a decent-looking recolour, since there are only two colours (plus black) to begin with; with newer sprites, it'd take more time for an inferior result. I could also just skip recolouring entirely, but that'd make it harder to differentiate between allies and enemies.

I could argue that these points are quickly solved, or non-existant, but;

Cobbling together my mock-up took, like, twenty minutes - most of that spent on one-time work like the grid, or making the buggers opaque "tiles". Well, what does stands out, is the multi tile terrain. Some of them, could easily be fixed with a few edits (like making that road 1-tiled), but many more can't. You also don't want to build any too many cities, as most houses have about twenty tiles, give or take. Though any "existing towns", can easily be dl-ed as a screenshot, and layed under a grid.

The "Real Problem", is how and what kind of terrain one can even make with pokemon.
Some "uneven" terrain, with rocks, is simple, tall grass can also easily have dis/advantages for combat.
Though as soon as a Snorlax tries to take cover in those bushes, my suspension of disbelief starts tingling.

To cut it short: The tilesets and icons are nice - real nice, in fact - but would they be worth the possible work-over of your rules / the lesser options that would stem from taking these tiles as basis?

179
Looking at it right now, I guess fog of war isn't actually needed. The landscape, safe for unknown terrain - possibly in enemy lands - is already known, and or visible to an extent. Having our field of vision outlined as it currently is, gives a more "realistic" touch than the black fog.

Also, currently waiting on Strawbarrel to complete his turn. Otherwise, I might have to take over the squad or turn it over to someone else. I might have to establish a reasonable time limit or, as someone suggested, have squads be suggestion based with more than one player controlling a squad.

About a reasonable time limit, huh. Wouldn't that be two days?
If the gm posts the new turn at "early night" of the participant, it can easily take twenty hours until the later sees it after coming home from work. Blame time-zones and workplaces without internet access for that one. The shortest turn under such circumstances, is already one day. Now just have them be busy with something else one evening, and two days can be considered fair. To have all participants online, as currently is the case, is a rare windfall.

Currently working on an FEF-style Pokemon strategy game.

This, sounds great, on so many levels. Consider me interested.

On a slightly different matter - is there a reason why you chose those particular sprites for the test-map, besides to "showcase" the idea? Caus' a quick search gave some nice 32x32 in-colour menu sprites for up to gen XY. About terrain, well, another quick check and I'd wager using the original tiles of, oh - your favourite gen? - won't be a problem either. (Well - at least up until they started making the game environment in pseudo 3d. Whichever gen that was)
