"We knew what we were getting ourselves into. Each and every one of us. A semi militaristic city, filled to the brim with the best technology available, inhabited by the most capable and talented people of our time? True, not all of us might have known what exactly we were doing here, but our purpose in being here was obvious."

        - Olaf Payam, Sovereign of Marcia, 2472

~

You are startled awake by a loud siren, stemming from the speakers above your bed. A siren that you have come to know well by now, at that.

Still dazed by being asleep until a moment ago, you let out an anguished groan. The Time? 5:12. 5:12 AM.
It dawns on you that two shifts will miss their meal at the canteen, you yourself included. Whoever authorized this crap, already has a special place in your thoughts.

Intent on staying under your warm blankets for as long as possible, you improvise. Wrapping them around yourself, your drudge to the wardrobe is illuminated by the stinging red light that accompanies such joyful occasions.
Despite your resistance to start this peculiar day in this peculiar manner, you really do not want to come late to the drill. Would just serve to make things worse.
Taking a longing glance towards the bathroom, you also give up on showering any time soon. A slight sniff at your armpits informs you that it shouldn't be noticeable.
Some deodorant will have to..

The speakers crackle to life with additional sound – someone heaving a heavy sigh, followed by a voice. A voice, at that, which you immediately recognize as belonging to General Tykson;

"Announcing Red Alert. This is NOT a drill. All military personnel is to make their way to the nearest armoury. All brass is to contact HQ ASAP. All civilians on the first level are advised to evacuate using the passages Gamma-1, Stigma-1 and Eta-1. Passage Alpha-1 is reserved for military use. Approaching enemy craft estimated to reach us in.. 117 seconds. I repeat;"

… Well, maybe you won't bother with deodorant after all. Suddenly not getting a shower seems to be one of your less pressing problems.

~

Until the general has repeated his words twice, you have hastily clothed yourself in your uniform. Realizing that it won't even hold of small calibre weaponry, any stairway or armoury is a good deal further from your quarters than you are comfortable with.

Almost ready to go, you reach for your laser pistol – a small calibre, how reassuring – and are greeted by its recognition system;

How cute. The system still identifies your gender as:

[] 87% Chance of being Male
[] 74% Chance of being Male
[] 83% Chance of being Female
[] 72% Chance of being Female

It also takes note of your general appearance:

Having swiftly determined your gender, it now sets out to find your name:

Having done just so, it also displays your authorization:

Soldier
Specifically drafted from those soldiers eligible to serve in extended and secret circumstances, everyone in the Marcia Corps can and should be considered a special operative. As one would expect, their aptitudes, skills and training mark them a good few steps above the common rank and file.

Engineer
Somewhat removed from their more common counterparts, any engineer of Marcia can boast a multitude of relevant degrees. Said degrees are applied in a practical way, be it to keep the extensive and state of the art installation up and running, or to build gadgets that may or may not end up useful for whatever research is being conducted on level 4.

Researcher
One of the specialists working on the [Classified] in the heart of Marcia, their research is of vital importance – and the sole reason behind the complex. While not all may be from the fields of [Classified] or [Classified], the others are experts needed one way or the other to let said research bear fruit.

The Ziggurat at Marcia

A "Choose Your Own Adventure"-type of game.

This game here, will try to be in the style of those books that many of us might know - Plus a small rpg-ish streak. While it stays a suggestion game at heart, there are some guidelines that will make my part just that much easier, and some informations that will do the same for you.

Branching:
Half of the fun, is seeing the what-if's play out, isn't it? Still, to avoid the plot branching out like the heads of the hydra of legend, there is a limit on the number of choices that can be made. While the default limit is two choices, if a situation seems promising enough, you just might have a chance at getting some more. Mainly on demand, really.

Unique Suggestions:
Please no trying to make a ground-hog-day out of this. As in, trying the exact same thing over and over again, until we finally succeed. If we failed when equipped with a rifle before, trying the same with a pistol in another time-line, might not be worth it. In that vein, obvious meta suggestions are also out, or just won't have none of the desired effect.

Adequate Suggestions:
Any result of a choice should – if the situation allows for it – fill a few paragraphs, so try to keep your suggestions accordingly. If us picking up that medi-kit and similar each get their own choice, this whole project will not only become long-winded, but also very boring. Putting more than a single action into a choice is fine, and actually encouraged. Eh... we'll manage, I'm sure.

Exhaustion:
Any straining actions will drain us, either mentally, physically, or even both. Once drained, the dice will be loaded against us. Resting is a valid course of action, still, checking the status tab before agreeing on any dangerous actions might be a good idea.

Status Tab:
Like mentioned above, you can track our exhaustion in this gem, together with our inventory. It might also include the map of the area, plus any important information that the character might know about the the same, or the current situation.

Current Stuff: Page #1 will be in the second reply. It will give you some classic SG-Choices, and set the stage for the beginning of the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure.

In regard to the latest announcement, the towering man lets loose a short whistle.
"Frowned upon? Now ain't that nice..."

"I suggest we split into small squads and begin a grid search of the area...let's keep in earshot and do it slow and steady. We need to make sure we don't shoot each other up...

Kyle, Bjarke-with me?"
She says, her voice faltering a bit-it's not sure if that was an order or a plea.

Bjarke's first answer is a short salute.
"Seems you know your stuff? Well, it sounds reasonable enough. In, I say"

"So... think they got us some live targets?"

I would presume that LuckyKobold also was able to grasp as much. The premise - of this experiment - is actually somewhat more interesting than what-ever the RNG of that site might put out. Having said that - I am quite interested in how this will "play out". Or rather, since no actuall story will be written by the gm, how the players will react...

Having heard the announcement, Bjarke's face brims with a gleeful smile, accompanied by him rubbing his hands together.
"Well, finally!"
Advancing in great strides, Bjarke enters the training grounds.

"Hmm-no. Not sure what you are getting at. Never read more of that one than what we were forced to read in elementary school."
Bjarke smirks slightly.
"Needless to say, even that is a good while back. Feel free to enlighten me, unless it is too preachy."

"Hmm.. nah, probably not. Truth be told, I only read one of his books, over 10 years ago - And thus speaks Zarathustra, I think? Either way, he seemed real gung-ho about the capabilities of humans, their potential. Or rather, he seemed to mostly be on the case about the inadequate effort that goes into that potential?"
He shrugs anew.

"Well... not saying that you are wrong per se - not that I would know better, and it sounds plausible enough. Still, I am quite sure that some of us are already proving old einsteins most famous theory wrong, inadequate, or to be at least even more complicated than he though. So, what I am getting at is - You might want to pick another smart guy to quote."
He shrugged slightly.
"Quote is still true though."

Hearing Jane's answer, Bjarke chimes in on the talk.
"Good call. For all of their talk of fixing you in there, they actually do a pretty good job of driving you mad instead. Or driving you mad even further, depending on the case? Well, either way, I haven't seen many that left, and if they did, it was either on a black stretcher, or to jail."

"Right on, soldier. If they want the meat, they'll have to do the carving first, won't they? We cut back, though...that we do."

Momentarily taken aback, Bjarke needed half a second to comprehend her sudden burst to assertiveness.
"Eh? Err.. … Right. Minus them carving us at all, if we can help it. They'll get their share of us, either way."

Hastily, he added; "... by which I mean the ruskies. If you don't mean those if you talk about "them", I'll have to distance myself from your comment."
Emphasizing his own comment with a nod, he took a glance towards the nearest soldiers, lips pursed to a painfully fake try of a friendly grin.

"Actually... if there are still rumours about us, then that is already far more than most of the dead will ever get, no? So, maybe a bit unnerving, but not by much. Still, I do agree that you can't really decide where not to die."

With a slight grin, he added; "Only works the other way around... Not that I would like either of these options."

Getting no indication that his words were heard by the soldiers, Bjarke joined in on the conversation.

"You're really keen on those, huh? Well, in-case that it does happen to me, rejecting your dibs. Not that I would care much for it by then, but I do entertain the thought of being cremated, you see?"

Well, looks like the forums are finally gonna get those points in cheating!

On a more serious note.. less is more. While it sounds fun to roll on a D100 table, it gets a drag real quick. The same goes for stats - I mean, 6 different attributes. 250 Points at start. 4 different rolls for a single attack? Imagine how many you will need for a whole combat-sequence!

Truth be told, unless you have great enough fervor / discipline, to actually carry through this dice-heavy monstrosity, you are bound to curse your own system before long. At least that's what I already did on multiple occasions.  :P (Speaking of my own systems, of course)

So... yeah. If you want to keep those 6 attributes, at least do yourself a favour and make Evasion, Accuracy, Armour and Extra-Strength-Damage a stable stat / bonus.  I'd also advise you to just drop a nil of the dice and attributes. Will take a heavy workload from your shoulders.

On that note, some people (me among them) tend to build a real nifty, convoluted game system. Which is fine, actually. Still, often enough it is putting the cart in front of the horse. Our players want to be entertained - the notion that the system behind their entertainment follows complicated, if not sophisticated rules is... well.. nice. But not much more than that. Putting even half of the time and effort, which drives this systems into the actual game - the story - and the players will go "great" instead. Well, no guarantess, but.. I trust that you get what I want to say.

ToCutItShort: Complicated Game-Systems do not add much "worth" to the players experience. Adding more to the story instead, yields better results.
(Or, even more direct - complicated game systems are enjoyable for the gm, as a kind of self-satisfaction. His players? They won't really care one way or the other...)

Leaving the issue of the system aside, what little you have told about the story, does sound interesting enough, especially the "Power" stat.

Reaching into another crate, Bjarke gives a positive exclamation to his findings. Pulling out the unwieldy incendiary device, the smile which is visible on his face, bears an uncanny resemblance to a child on Christmas. A child who got the wished-for pony, at that.

Inspecting the flame-thrower closely, the oafish man even erupts into the occasional consenting hum, and the more occasional, lightly suppressed... squeal. Yes, squeal. His excitement is finally watered down, when his eyes give more than a dart-over towards the trigger.
"Aww... two-handed deadman safety? No fun."

Having his hope of dual-wielding two of the things shattered, he delves ever deeper into the available armament, emerging with ordinance. Said grenade-launcher even manages to draw out a rather unsettling chuckle from his lips.

A short time later, he has further snatched and attached a grenade and a scope – the grenade to his belt, the scope to the launcher, seeming rather satisfied with his selection.

"As he said," he gestures towards Darek, "Where do we get to use these beauties? Got a range around here?"

Bjarke takes:

Large - Flamethrower
Medium - X2020 Compact Grenade Launcher
Small - Grenade
Small - Scope; Attached to X2020 Compact Grenade Launcher
