Do you forsee any further uprisings? At this stage it does not look good for the syrian or egyptian goverment, the latter of which i see a hard time living down what's viewed as an attempt to make themselves dictators. Incidentally, which countries have very little chance of western support?

Amazingly i managed to confuse the observational capacity's of curiosity and the satellite observing mercury from the comparisons to tar or coal. Forgive me, not exactly in my most attentive state at the moment by a long shot.

Already covered by the Fermi Paradox, I think.  Pretty much as you said (except that I've just snipped it).

I tend to go with "The Universe is so large and FTL-capable societies are so few/far-between/transient* that even the most prolific FTL-dispersing/exploring* aliens just haven't found us/tripped over us/accidentally revealed themselves to us*". [*delete as inapplicable]

We might be in a "wildlife park", you know.  Kept pristine and unspoilt by major developments, beyond the dreams of any 'mere' Prime Directive type of thing.  But keep an eye out for any interstellar vandalism, litter and 'pic-a-nic baskets'!

Your family thinks the Mayans had high technology? I'm genially curious as to how they came to that conclusion, though to be fair there is Narrative Causality.

You know, i remember hearing about a group of survivalists moving to Lesotho a few years back in preparation for this, thanks to the ring of mountains, distance, relative unimportance as a target etc. I look forward to hearing about the aftermath. Loud whispers, i highly doubt this is about apocalyptic planning, but rather how would you spend your last days on earth.
