DF Gameplay Questions / Fixing wrong ASCII tiles?
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:34:35 pm »
Hello everyone. After receiving a fort sent to me from a friend who used a texture pack and loading it in a DF using ASCII, I had this happen:

I remember this being an issue in several succession fortresses but I don't remember at all how to fix this. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Hello! I have to thank you, DS, for writing this. It's what got me into dwarf fortress in the first place, watching such an inhospitable embark zone turn into a delicately balanced fortress that against all odds has survived close to two years realtime and several DF regions. And coming back after a year's hiatus from the game to find Roomcarnage still trundling on warms my heart like the mountain itself  :D.

So, thanks for weaving this tale, and hopefully luck continues to shine on the fort!

(PS: What kind of temperature settings did you use to get an iceworld?)

Huh, that's some weird pathing right there. That would explain how all those crundles are getting into my fort.

DF General Discussion / Re: A long essay about dwarven military vs. RL
« on: August 16, 2014, 11:35:52 am »
That was interesting and gave me a few ideas, hehe...

On the subject of mounted archers: I honestly don't think they would be that much of a hard counter against prepared dwarves. With their defensive emphasis, the dwarves probably would wait in pre prepared structures/tunnel networks to shelter from arrow fire while forcing enemies to engage them on foot, negating the advantages of both cavalry and archers.

Of course, they'd get slaughtered if caught unprepared, but what army doesn't?

If elves actually were a little better about bringing warbeasts, they would quickly become more threatening than the Gobbos or Humans. Imagine a tamed Dragon setting all those trees on fire, dropping armor piercing logs to pulp your dwarves...

I minecart railgunned my meeting hall/test chambers by accident. How was I supposed to know a minecart at sufficient velocity impacting a fortification turns its contents (Spears and shortswords) into deadly projectiles?

Everything is bloody now

Soo... Minecarts.

I finally figured out how the trackstop QSP works and got one running.

THen I learned how to make a minecart railgun. With a set of impulse ramps spanning half of a 7x8 embark. Accidentally.

There are so many blood stains the wall looks like it was painted. I don't even know what got killed.  ::)

At least I managed to get an Admantine breastplate artifact during all the chaos.

Soo...

Falling is the earth attacking you. Then the spear provides something to parry, so the Dwarf attempts to parry the planet's attacks indirectly and gains the experience?

It's the perfect way to train doctors up too! not only do you level up your soldiers, but medical staff can get training on the injuries they sustain!

(And coffin building every now and then)

9
MUST. TRY. THIS.
The Goblins will learn to rue early rushes once they run into a horde of legendary hammerdorfs during the second year  :D

I finished designating sixty sets of upright weapon(S), linking them to a single lever.

10 glass menacing spikes in each. Now all I need is a goblin christmas... which still hasn't arrived.  ::)

Dear Urist McFarmer:

The seeds are right next to you. Stop telling me you can't find them.

Dear Urist McMacedwarf:

Next time, please use your Artifaect steel mace rather than the hammerer's candy hammer. I don't want three pages of you bashing the goblin on the head and bruising the muscle.

Dear Urist McLegendary + 5 Axedwarf:

I told you to stay in the barracks! Now all those goblins I was preparing to use for training are all dead!  ::)

I finally got something to beat that Slade Warhammer decorated with Plat I lost in an older fort.

A gold shortsword made using the planepacked glitch, it used (I think) 10 gold bars in its construction.
It was worth quite a bit.

Finally returned to DF after a half year of occasionally jumping on-and-off.

Had some fun building a massive tower up into the sky, pumping lava, and turning the entire fortress into a lava filled death-land. started a war with the elves, but screw the elves :D. I'd forgotten how fun (and !!FUN!!) DF was.

Very. :D

I have an image of a line of carts suddenly flashing past a goblin, discharging bolts as they do so. Goblin boltcushion!

I don't remember! Shortly after the siege I lost the hammer in, a miner accidentally breached the Circus defenses and I lost the fortress.

I did get another sweet artifact at my current fortress, though. Bronzeclean, a adamantine pick that menaced with spikes of bituminous coal and platinum
