This is going round like a Benny Hill sketch...

No, those are at least occasionally funny.  People who cant find a solution that was posted 2-3 times in the last 2 pages isn't.

They also tend to have nubile, bouncy girls with a distinct lack of mammalian support...

I'd like my dwarf therapist to dispense cookies directly into my food hole when I click a button.

Thanks.

/signed

though i would like this to be automated, so just constantly shove cookies down my food hole at startup. I'll just look away and let the cookies slide on to the floor when i get tired.

Just be careful to turn on your refuse collection, or you'll end up having negative thoughts due to miasma...  Also a problem if you haven't gotten soap production up and running.  :)

I just tried 0.5.0 with 0.31.03, and I'm seeing runaway memory allocation...  Already twice what Firefox is using.  Over half a gig.  Then it just dropped, but is back on the rise.  I assume it's a mem-scanner thing.  In which case, bad offsets might cause it to start wandering off and scanning Armok-knows-what chunks of RAM....

Yeah, but the English language isn't quite as fatal...  Not to say there aren't those who murder it. In the face.  A lot.

Actually I always thought that it was "Jury-rigged" (haphazardly put together) and "jerry-built" (poorly or shoddily constructed), but I suppose that just like Dwarf Fortress, the english language is in a perpetual state of "alpha release"  :D

Then I got the solution for you. Use Firefox or Opera. For FF there's a plugin that allows you to turn off images. This is a default feature under Opera. If you're still using IE, do yourself a favour and stop, or you're not worth listening to in browsing-related questions.
This is not a reasonable solution. There are many images on the forum that serve important uses - they're buttons, or they tell you that a thread has new posts, or you want to use avatars. Turning off all images entirely isn't useful.

Without supporting the browser-hate-mongering of Mikademus, I'd like to add that if an image is required for something like buttons or notifications, the designer should be taken out back, beaten with O'Reilly books on XHTML and CSS, and then forced to use Lynx for all initial page design.  You'd be surprised what you can do with an unordered list and well-thought out CSS...  (see css Zen Garden for mind-boggling examples)

Just my little rant on developing/designing accessible and XHTML-compliant web content...

Oh, and jQuery rocks!

DF Bug Reports / Re: My guys are drowning

I think Garry is actually Toady.  Too many hours in front of source code and bug reports tends to make the world a little... surreal.  And he's just inviting us into his little Disneyland of DF, where Space Mountain is filled with magma, and It's a Small World floods its banks every day at half past 3 in the afternoon.

Wait a second...  What self-respecting dwarf would drink a fuzzy navel?  Or a mimosa?  What place do wine coolers have in the rough-hewn rock mugs of surly, sweaty, and swearing dwarves?  OK, maybe the namby-pamby, pinky-raising nobles would prefer a pina colada over a pint of honest grog, but until the craftsdwarves figure out how to make those tiny umbrellas, I say leave well enough alone!

My dwarves aren't named Boone, nor do the names Bartles or Jaymes appear on any work roster...

Yikes!  I am very grateful for the examples.  You'd think that after more than a decade, I'd remember that humor is a difficult thing to get across in electronic text...

Please accept my apologies for any miscommunication.  The "criticisms" of your example are all things I expect are significantly non-trivial, sort of like chiding Toady for not having full motion capture animation with per-pixel shaders and dynamic facial motion with complete lip-sync for any arbitrary spoken string.   ;)

I should have made sure to thank you before "complaining" so you'd know that I am grateful for your examples, and not some random ignorance-spouting waste of bandwidth (a class of troll hereafter to be referred to as "Garry").

Thank you for pointing out AutoHotKey and for supplying your personal script as an example.

What?  No GUI?  No fractal living blocks?  No auto-detecting gems to avoid mining by a bloody novice with a dull brass pick?  (Theoretically possible, but you'd have to make sure it works for your tileset, and keep the mining activities on-screen.)

 :D

I'll spend some time tomorrow working out something fun...

Would you be willing to post a macro or two?  AutoHotKey looks to have a learning curve only slightly shallower than DF...  ;)

DF Suggestions / Re: Steampunk-ness
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:59:00 am »
To the stygian abyss with mecha, I'd like to see steam powered mechanics.  Even without a complex control system (like a steam engine), it'd be fun to harness the power of magma + water...  Sure we know that clouds of steam scald and cook flesh, but if it's created in an enclosed space with a small escape path, you could have steam jets, steam cannons, steam powered pneumatic rams (so you have to scrape goblin paste off the ceiling).  You could set up a pressure plate linked to a floodgate that allows the magma and water to mix.

I could see the need for some new mechanic's items, like a pressure relief valve to prevent excess steam from leaking into dwarf-inhabited areas (in case you miscalculated the precise mixture for your ram).  Maybe pistons as well.  But just the things needed for "macro" engineering projects.  Perhaps this would be the best method for mass transit/portage power.  Probably only used for object transportation (could be a bit hot, wet, and/or violently accellerated for livestock or delicate goods).  Plus, they could act like transistors for you psychos who want to use these sorts of things to build macro-computers (link a steam pressure sensor to a floodgate, etc., etc.).

Just some ramblings from a dabbler who has yet to even dig to the chasm!
