DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone else have abandonement issues?

I can't keep a fort around either.  Hell, I can't keep a region around!  Even if I take a large region, I'll scrap it if something goes wrong in my fort.  Usually, it's something along the lines of: Make plans (in head), begin excavations, admire work, get distracted by a vein of coal/silver/sapphires, dig out all of the "valuables", get frustrated about the amount of time and effort needed to rebuild the excavated area to match plans, try to work around it, flood the fort, abandon fort, wipe data/save directory.  Sometimes, I get a better idea halfway through the first one, and try to make adjustments that never work.

I've found I prefer the meta-game/community almost as much fun as the game.  Happened to me in WoW, too.  Ended up writing mods more than playing.  Now I just trawl/troll the forums... ;)

You can mod WoW?  :o

Try a megaconstruction and view it in Stonesense (when it updates)

Not really mod it, but there is a Lua interface to the UI that you can write... modules for. It's been a couple of years, but while I was playing, almost no one would run a raid without some mod pack. Auto healing, various alerts, big buttons of doom...

335 - you rename "wikipedia" into "Legendsmode" in your head.

336 - you realize that Legends mode is more correct and complete than wikipedia.

I have a note next to SS that says "Copy the .xml from DFHack for partial 31.18 compatability"
But also I think downloading the latest xml linked in the main post somewhere (hidden in a spoiler) may do it.

But I don't blame you guys, it really ISN'T apparent. The link to the the XML is tiny and hidden, and doesn't give any hint to what version it is compatible with.

Yeah, you kind have to know beforehand that SS uses dfhack, and that an updated memory.xml is what's needed...

Oooh. Well thanks for clearing that up. I take it thats just a buggy work around for now?

No...  Whenever a new DF is released, you need to get the new memory.xml from the various hackers (white hat) who map out the memory usage.  That way, all the tools that use dfhack get updated simultaneously, and every tool doesn't need to be updated every time.

333 - You start looking for the bookkeeper settings for the global economy, cause it needs a *lot* more accuracy...

Nobles shouldn't be awarded priz-
Oh, the NOBEL price.

The Nobel price is your time.

The Nobles price is their soul screaming for all eternity, alone at the bottom of the magma sea.

Ok, so throw Warhammer Fantasy Battles in the mix... All very emo-goth-matrixy nihilistic doom set in a Benny Hill episode.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why is .31 so much slower than .40d ?
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:19:51 pm »
It has been discussed at great length before, and Toady has said that it's too complex of a job for him to convert to multi-threaded at this time.  I don't know if it will happen in the future.  The relative difficulties and benefits have been beaten to death repeatedly, so I'm just trying to head off this train wreck at the station...

edit: It has also been made clear that DF is Toady's project, and he has no desire to bring in more developers (he's already partially taken in a couple to help with the graphics extensions). Especially at the very low level of design that would have to be reworked to go multi-threaded.

Just a quick note: Due to the single-threaded nature of DF, it's not unlikely that an older single-core CPU would have better per core clock speed/buffer response/bus bandwidth than a CPU with multiple cores.

Sadly the only single core machine I have access to is:
a) a notebook with no numpad which makes playing DF extra annoying and
b) old enough and weak enough that it has a hard time with DF.

I didn't say it would be common, just not completely out of the realm of possibility...  :)

No less horrifying than the grim, dark future of Warhammer 40k...  And a lot more amusing!

Thank you!

DF General Discussion / Re: Vegetable Oil?
« on: December 15, 2010, 01:48:23 pm »
I could suggest other uses for veggie oil, but Dwarves use spores...

Now, if we could just get vinegar, we could have a dressing for that raw Plump Helmet and Longland Grass plate Urist has been trying to get people to eat.  Or a marinade for elven traders...
