House Melendez was once a well-known noble house of Tear, with few scandals that ever came to fruition around them. However, that all changed with just a couple of its members being outed as wilders. Though House Melendez did its best to quell the panic, rumors continued to flare up accusing various members of House Melendez left and right. A full-blown witchhunt flared up, and House Melendez's reputation began to sink. However, when all seemed lost, they were given the chance to merge with House Calderon; a House in similar reputation to House Melendez before their fall while having been in good standing with them. Marriage caused their merge, and House Melendez was no more as House Calderon's might grew with the fading of the rumors.
Hortensia Calderon de Melendez was the result of the merge of the Calderon and Melendez houses. She was the absolute pinnacle of a perfect noble girl, being constantly doted on by the entire house and an absolutely prime candidate for making House Calderon one of the High Lords of Tear. The only problem with her that no one would dare say to her face was House Calderon's brainwashing. House Melendez was mostly indifferent towards commoners, but House Calderon absolutely treated commoners like the cockroaches living in the corners of run-down houses. With the combination of her mother's indifference, her father's brainwashing, and her overall desire to be the perfect noblewoman, Hortensia fell into the trap of thinking commoners were just like dirt; necessary, but meant to be trodden upon.
Hortensia's private schooling was difficult as expected for someone of her high status, and to achieve the grades she desired she worked constantly. After a particularly stressful day of school, Hortensia took a bath and stayed in there to the point of dozing off in the bathtub. Predictably, she began to drown. With no idea as to what was going on, she panicked without thinking to just push her head above the water... and then before she knew it, all of the water in the bathtub was splattered all over the floor. This was the first time Hortensia ever had to do any sort of cleaning in her life, and every servant in that house was wondering why 90% of the towels in the house were sopping wet.
Hortensia didn't figure out what happened until this unfortunate accident happened two more times with the increasingly stressful school year. After the third time of having to mop up the water and fearing questions from the servants, Hortensia eventually figured it out with some research on her family history and the One Power— she was one of the wilders that she and the rest of Tear feared. She felt like drowning herself after learning that she was the very thing she and all other citizens of Tear feared... only to realize that that wouldn't work.
With Hortensia's reputation at stake, her overnight change of mental state becoming alarming to everyone, as well as with what she had heard happened when Aes Sedai took wilders in for training (the horror on her face when she learned she wouldn't be treated like a noble and expect to be on equal grounds with commoners), Hortensia became a very odd sight in Tear. She became a hydrophobe. That was her excuse for avoiding basically everything related to water that wasn't related to her hygiene, and she never relaxed in the bath ever again.
She wasn't hydrophobic of course, she thought it was completely silly to be afraid of water. Especially as a noble of Tear; many people raised a few eyebrows at her fear but thankfully were not the questioning types. Even with her general confidence still there, she constantly worried about the day she would be discovered... but she promised to never be discovered so long as she lived and breathed.
