DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Adventure Mode Little Questions Thread
« on: February 20, 2015, 02:13:35 am »
Hi, just now familiarizing myself with the latest changes to adventure mode.  I've gotten a character pretty much overpowered, but I still can't find a hydra, dragon, titan, etc.  How do I actually do this?  Villagers instructions seem to refer to locations that I can't find in any menu, including Logs and while Traveling.  Am I missing something obvious?

Hmm.  I had the idea of retiring, rolling another adventurer, slaughtering with him, suiciding, then un-retiring.  But the homeotherm option is looking especially interesting...

I'll travel back to the city and let you know what happens.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Unfindable Task?-Vampire Bug

I'm not sure if this is *always* the case, but the vampires I've found have all been flashing.  It might just be a coincidence, though, since vampires might often be 'elite' fighters given their immortality.

You can also (l)ook at villagers to see what they're wearing-- vampires generally wear clothing made out of human body parts (crowns of bone, necklaces of teeth, etc.)  Again, not sure if this is always the case.

I discovered a city with a dungeon I want to explore, but the framerate plummeted as soon as I ventured in.  Sure enough, I discovered an entire section completely saturated with lag-inducing turkeys and dogs.

These vermin have horribly distorted the space-time continuum, which I have an obligation to protect.  Any ideas on how to slaughter them all without pissing off the local civilization?

Just began an entire, lengthy series for my most recent adventurer: Lecit Latherwipes, son of Lelgo, Hurler of Large Objects!  I also abandoned Movie Maker in favor of Adobe Premiere, and the sound quality is markedly improved (the video quality's a tad better as well.)  It's about time I made the transition XD

Does nobody else wanna make an LP?!  Geez, I feel all alone... like a solitary eagle... that has yet to be beaten to death by a companion.  :(

DF Modding / Re: [Utility] Syntax Highlighting for DF raws
« on: January 28, 2013, 01:20:55 am »
Nope, hehe. This should work much better for me. Besides, Notepad++ was getting annoying with needing admin permission to run.

*whew* You had me going there, heh.

I don't think Sublime requires admin, but there's a good chance manual installation of the package does, since you'd be fiddling inside the AppData which is hidden by default.  Package Control would probably work, but it's still getting set up by the devs on their end :P  Should be up tomorrow or the day after, hopefully.

Ah, nice. I expanded an old one from 40d for Notepad++ a little while back, but it only has creature raws for now, so I'm probably not releasing it. Also, it also has this annoying thing with apostrophes, which is why you'll see stray apostrophes in my code :P.'

Thanks, it's fairly simple, really :P

Only creature raws?  Oh dear, you didn't hard-code in every token did you???  That sounds like a nightmare XD  I basically just treat the first component of a token as the "type", then further components as parameters.  Anything not in between brackets is considered a comment.  It's all Regex magic in Sublime, no validation of token types or anything.

Though that does give me an idea... just make a web scraper for the token lists on the wiki, build a table, then you have validation :)  I don't think you'd be able to reference your own created types, however.

DF Modding / [Utility] Syntax Highlighting for DF raws
« on: January 28, 2013, 12:49:29 am »
Hello one and all,

I just created a very simple package for Sublime Text that syntax highlights the DF raws.  If you don't already have an IDE (ie, a text editor for programmers), I strongly recommend downloading Sublime, as it'll make those raws a thousand times easier to look at :)

Should I mention that this IDE is both fantastic, fully-featured, and free?  Hehe.

Once installed, you can select DFML in Sublime by clicking the bottom-right of the window where the current syntax is displayed.

Happy modding!

I'd love to help you with this, but I get very little time to record, and I'm having a bug where I can't load adventure mode saves.

No big, I think I'm underestimating how difficult it is to actually be in a position to record a DF LP :P
  • Gotta have a decent computer
  • Gotta have a decent microphone
  • Gotta have Fraps and properly configured graphics for DF
  • Gotta look good on camera!

Anyhow, if you manage to get in a position to record, don't hesitate to do so and post whatever you make, epicness will surely ensue.

Just so everyone knows, if you want to record an LP, I strongly recommend using Fraps.  To get DF working with it, however, you'll need to open data/init/init.txt and change "[PRINT_MODE:2D]" to "[PRINT_MODE:STANDARD]".  All this does is swap from something like SDL graphics to OpenGL graphics, which will make no noticeable impact other than allowing you to use Fraps with DF :)

I greatly modified the original post-- this is now yer standard succession thread, see?  I also added an additional LP, to which I'm currently uploading the second half.  Hehe.

DF Community Games & Stories / Adventure Mode Let's Play Succession!
« on: January 25, 2013, 03:47:25 pm »
Hello guys and gals,

There seems to be a severe lack of Adventure Mode Let's Plays on YouTube-- the only truly successful ones I've come across are by jefmajor, which are fantastic.  Since, in my opinion, adventure mode LPs have a TON of potential, we should go about attempting to fill this void!  How you ask?  By creating some sort of ridiculous Adventure Mode succession of sorts!

I've never done this kind of thing before, so suggestions on how exactly to structure this would be fantastic.  However, I've already taken a crack at a few LPs, and I'll proceed to stick them down below :)  Feel free to post any LPs you've created until some kinda formal structure is established.  If things take off, we can even have a voting system and compile a list of some truly epic LPs for everyone to enjoy, hehe.

Here are my submissions:
The Horrible Tale of Ilre Hornbreakfast
Sath Moistnessfancies the Chunkonator, Part 1
Sath Moistnessfancies the Chunkonator, Part 2
Lelgo Latherwipes, Hurler of Large Objects
Lecit, Son of Lelgo (Part 1)
Lecit, Son of Lelgo (Part 2)

Tell me what you think, I enjoyed making these and plan on making more (I'm keeping this list entirely updated).  I'm relatively inexperienced at LPing, so constructive criticism is more than welcome.

Note: the first one is stupidly zoomed out, but it's corrected by the next LP.

If I may direct a pointed question to Hanslanda:

Y U NO FINISH STORY?!?

I just scanned 100 pages of this thread hunting for closure :(

This is awesome, props to the OP for some cutting edge DF interface design.  I'd love so much to see this in the game...

If I may comment on the OP's organization (only to help some great ideas get off the ground), as someone who constantly receives spell suggestions for his own completely unrelated Minecraft mod...

It's not intuitive to do this, but I think you should abandon the list-iness of your ideas, narrow them down, and go into a little more depth with how your ideas will be interesting.  The juiciest part is the very last "Some things I envision with this system:", because it's brief and gives some really cool consequences of your suggestions, rather than just running through them.  The idea of raising your fallen king is genuinely amazing, and the idea of ensuring each of your dwarves has a magic sword is also fun (anyone who plays DF surely enjoys having their ducks in a row.)  Consequences are good, little details are bad :)

As you focus more on the mechanics, you may realize some of your ideas don't have a great justification (not to imply that they don't), and I'd encourage you to remove any that you can't justify.

Example things I'd like to know: why would splitting spells into Arcane and Divine be interesting?  Is it worth the added complexity of having two spell trees (especially when both trees have a lot of summon abilities?)  Speaking of, why the focus on summoning creatures?  Why is that appealing?  Etc.

I receive spell suggestions constantly, and it'd be a million times easier to find interesting ideas if they'd do this.  I don't care if a spell is "Fire" or "Ice" or has an explicitly defined progression, but I care if the mechanic itself is interesting.  The absolute worst is when someone has "Generic Bolt I: does 3 damage, Generic Bolt II: does 5 damage, ...", hehe.  Consequently, I've thought about making Generic Bolt a real spell :)

@Novel:

A great way to give magic some uniqueness and depth would be to randomly generate anything possible-- make summoning spells summon a specific creature with a random name and type (Dak'thul the Demon-Sponge!), give projectile spells a random appearance and element (Summons a great cloud of mist as the dwarf squints his eyes and shudders violently!), etc.  That would be a lot of fun :)

DF Suggestions / Re: endgame is still boring
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:12:32 am »
As more internal challenges come up (harder/more complex farming, fortress social issues, etc.), it becomes less viable to just wall yourself off from the outside world with impunity, and there become greater ways to interact with the world in general, I think this situation will improve.

Perhaps external solutions to internal problems would fix walling up.  Suppose the brand new cult demands giant hamster bone sculptures...
