So if you actually place the statue it's worth a lot more. I started with stone statues when I was first figuring out the game and what all the stuff does so my next try I made a copper statue and I noticed when placed the value is between 700 and 5000 based on quality. My next try I found a bunch of silver which was between 1000 and 15... Game actually says 15... and it's better for homogeneous statues than mixed ones. Last try I was making Gold statues which when placed are between 2k and 50k when placed. Most of the time I found gold under -70 depth. I was putting them all in my great hall with a few tables and chairs and the food and drink stockpiles, one for each. Stone statues are only worth about 9 to 50 when not placed and 210 when placed. Similar with wood. So at the end I would get my miners to only mine and have everyone else working on hauling or smelting and metalcrafting depending on if they had natural talent for metal crafting or not and after I made 6 crates 2 for coal 2 for ore and 2 for bars i just hauled and smelted the rest of the time.

So basically the process is you have to make 96 planks and 40 stone blocks, a carpenter for the crates and 4 tables and chairs which is deconstructed when done,  2 smelters that I raised the priority in the overview tab, a furnace, a copper metalworker, top priority, that I usually find the ore for on the way down along with some other trash tin or malachite that I use to make the first 2 crappy statues with to warm up my crafter, then the rest of the time just try to get to gold or silver.  Don't bother with a dorm or foraging they usually have enough to last them if you place a stockpile for them to find the stuff. At the workshops if they don't have the materials to make something they will start on the next thing on the list but they will try to make the thing on the top first if they have all the ingredients so I keep my smelters going non stop by having them prioritize gold(repeat) then silver(repeat) then any metal(repeat) and the same at the metalcrafter. The only thing about gold is the ore is some 200 steps away so on the last 2 days I have 3 guys smelting, making coal or making statues and NO hauling and everyone else is bringing them the materials and placing the statues... And that's a lot of text but that's what I did.

Also I didn't use the stair trick to find ore I looked for holes and was just annoyed by them not being able to place stairs in a nice straight line or having my miners get stuck and unable to get back up.

Seriously though, let us designate stair digging in unknown areas. Waiting for the miner to dig to every step is tedious.

Also, designating over open space in unexplored areas shows boxes in the space below.

A bit late on this but you CAN designate stair digging in unknown areas. Just make sure you're assigning them to the correct square or you'll end up getting your gnomes trapped... And I thought gnomes were supposed to be smart.

So anyways what you would do for instance is right click>Terrain>dig>down stairs then place the first step, move one block over, scroll down one block, place second step, repeat. You can only dig upstairs from below them and you can only dig down stairs from above them. The game is still in alpha so it's still a bit buggy with things like that but it's easy enough to work around... I don't even want to mess with indoor ramps

I feel sorry to those who are actually trying to play the game normally and not spamming.

May it be spamming golden statues or creating goods. It's hard work. My last game took me 4 hours. And i can't wait to play the game normally but you can't play the demo normally with 5 ingame-days.

True story.

I sorta gave up on this after I learned everyone was just clearcutting forests and stuff in a direct attempt to win instead of actually playing the game the way it was meant to be played.

We are just trying to use all possibilities. And btw. clearcutting the forest won't make you rich. And I can play the game when I got the full version. But this is a competition based on highscore.

More true story. I made my millions in the gnome world by experimenting with the materials given and crafting my little gnomes hearts out then refining the process to make as much as possible in those little 5 days.  In my final attempt I played inception and dug deeper to the bottom of the map to find the choicest nugs (nuggets of ore) to make the finest crafts and get the highest score... which I thought was the point of this little contest. Don't be jelly because you can't craft good. It's still fun. I had to build a huge bridge across a chasm to get to where I needed to go, which I thought was pretty cool, and by the end I had each and every one of my gnomes working to pump out that final piece. Also there's lava at the bottom so watch out.

Pro/bug tip.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The game still needs work but it's still pretty fun. There are a bunch of little things to work on like pathing, stockpiles, and little stuff like buggy stairs and ramps but it's not like I could program something better so who am I to say anything.

Heads up, there are no ring or necklace stockpiles yet so you can only make 20 that will sit in jewlcrafter's stall unmovable.

I'm pushing 100k now. I think if I found a good map I could do much better. I'm really quite curious as to how you do it without building anything. If we combined our techniques we could rule the world!

First time making it through all 6 days.

Take 2 all I did the last 2 days was cut gems and make necklaces. If stockpiles worked correctly then I could probably make a lot more. I'll try for more metal work next time.
