I had my first great success with a +iron two-handed sword+.
I've recently become a fan of wrestling things until I break a limb, letting them pass out, then walking among the unconscious foes stabbing them in the brain with my large knife. You have to break both an archer's limbs before they stop using their bows/crossbows though.
