Is it possible to force them to not attack each other
At the creature/caste level, no, not without breaking combat behavior (ie benign). But you could always slap together a quick entity. Then you can give them low siege requirements and certain ethics/values that conflicts with dwarves.

Hey this clothing optional script sounds really helpful! I hadn't thought about it until now but, if a creature doesn't have the body parts (eg feet) to wear a certain type of clothing (eg shoes) do they still get the negative thought from not having said clothing? Is that what this script is for?

Thanks so much Atkana. It sounds like these modifiers aren't actually useful in my situation, at least color modifiers are a thing! haha :p
The APP_MOD tokens seem more useful, I'm curious to add ever-growing whiskers to a few cat-like creatures of mine, so I'll do some more research into BP app mod with those tokens as well.
Thanks for both clearing that up for me and giving me some more inspiration haha.

Can somebody help me understand how the numbers in appearance modifiers are used to determine description strings? It seems to be based on the variation of the numbers rather than the numbers themselves. I don't understand how this works though. How do you make them all show up with the same string for the appearance mod, eg "he is short" or whatever. Because giving them a range spread out but moved one way or the other doesn't seem to be it, and giving them all the same number results in them all being described as average. I don't understand how to manipulate the bell curve. In fact, I don't even want the full bell curve most of the time. I'm just trying to differentiate that some of my creatures - as a species - are all broad/tall/whatever.

How do you manipulate the variation so they always show up as one thing? How do you move it so they're all some variation of say really really low to low? like I never want some of them to be high, but it seems to make this function you *have* to have a really high value in there otherwise there is no variation and nothing for it to generate a string with.

I'm really frustrated trying to understand this. You would think that if they had a range like this:
Code: [Select]
    [BODY_APPEARANCE_MODIFIER:HEIGHT:0:10:25:30:35:40:50]
where you set the lowest to 0 and the highest to 50, they're all some variation of short. What is this even out of? 100? 200? But nope that's not it, now they just have a range between 0 and 50 to track the variation of some generated numbers somewhere and compare them here??? I dont get it.

Do I do like, most of the time they'll all be really short except that 0.2% (stats was a long time ago for me) or whatever 3 deviations are, chance they're stupidly tall?:
Code: [Select]
    [BODY_APPEARANCE_MODIFIER:HEIGHT:0:0:0:0:0:0:200]
???
I don't really want them to accidentally mutate into freakishly tall creatures just so everybody else can be short...

It sounds like that's just going to cause a bunch more problems when you combine it with length and broadness, you'll end up with this weird combination strings that seem to only be found in either the string dump or in game, making it a wild lottery as to how your creature will be described. Ugh.

If you look at nords in oldgenesis, their height mod looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[BODY_APPEARANCE_MODIFIER:HEIGHT:95:105:110:125:130:150:160]
what does that really mean? they can be 95 height to 160 height, with most of the time ending up around 125 height? that doesn't help tell me like, are they short are they tall what's going on here? they've got lots of room between the median and the highest, and not as much of a difference between the median and the lowest, im guessing that means they're capable of being tall? But that doesn't tell me like, are they *always* tall or are they just capable of being tall? how much of a difference counts?

someone please make it make sense.

I'm not sure I understand fully so sorry if this doesn't answer what you're asking, but size plays a considerable role in attacks. If you want their bite to be worse, make their head, mouth and teeth all bigger. They'll chop limbs off whole before you know it. I guess it isn't the answer you're looking for. You could make them attack faster, change
Code: [Select]
[ATTACK_PREPARE_AND_RECOVER:3:3]to
Code: [Select]
[ATTACK_PREPARE_AND_RECOVER:2:2]they'll bite like mad. give them lots of teeth to bite with? Really though if you increase the relsize of teeth, they'll get way more deadly.

I'm thinking of making Gelding result in parts.
Then starting a fortress in a haunted biome (or by a necro. tower).
Feel free to use the genitals and breasts from older OldGenesis versions to add "reaalism" to your worlds  :-X :-[
I don't think the gelding feature can be modified, but butchering gives the organs like lungs and hearts.
speaking of, OldGenesis has become a bit of an inspiration for me. I keep finding myself going, "hmm how can I implement this correctly?" and referring to all the notes and goodies in OldGenesis. Most recent example is creature behaviors through the SOUND token. I'd just been keeping the thought in the back of my mind, and I'd wanted to know what yours and Deon's take was on the mannerisms tokens, and I noticed in the civilized creature file you'd done exactly what I'd been thinking with the SOUND token! Good stuff and it's all much appreciated!

alright what's the state of civilized egg-layers? I read on a very old thread that if a citizen in fort mode has to lay eggs they're bound to the nest box and bad things happen. Is this still the case?
DFHack still needed, I guess. https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/7apvhl/egglaying_civilization/
not yet fixed, on bugtracker https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=10209
Thank you, much appreciated!

DF Modding / Re: The Neopets Mod!

I've got something for everyone today!

I've been really trying to bring the mod back around to what I originally had envisioned, and check out the results!!

Spoiler: a Jetsam god (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: poor Jubjub (click to show/hide)

All of these are really great examples where Neopets' atmosphere shines through! I'm really excited with how this is coming along!

Hmm, well trying DISPLAY=:0 through =:4 didn't work, but running it through xterm instead of "konsole" (lol) worked fine, AND the write problem was solved. So note going forward, don't bother with kde's terminal lol.
Do me a favour if you don't mind and 'echo $DISPLAY' in xterm so I can get some data on why it didn't work the other way?
just gives me :0

Which distribution of Linux are you using?
debian + kde. I tried xubuntu for a while and found it to be just alright, so I wanted to try somethin' else this time.
you really are making me feel like an idiot right now. My terminal is infact in text mode but I'm pretty sure X is running? I mean my desktop environment is running, I would think that would include the window manager right? Sorry I'm an idiot but I guess it's time to get learnt today :P
yeah going into the console (as su -) and typing X tells me it's already running.
Mooooost likely you can just do 'DISPLAY=:0' to set DISPLAY to the most likely correct value, then try running DF, and it should pick up X properly. It's possible that 0 isn't the right screen or whatever the X word for it is, or that you need to set it differently some other way, but it's almost always :0.

BTW, if you use some flavour of xterm (probably one comes with your desktop environment) it should be configured to have this value set automatically.

Nice, chown is the trick. Interestingly enough, the display error came back.
It's fair to say that you have now exceeded the domain of my expertise, but just in case you haven't, do me a favor and 'echo $DISPLAY'?
Just gives me a blank line. It does output, just a blank line.
Because I've learned not to assume things, you do actually have X running, right? Your terminal is not in fact in text mode?

-snip-
Giving you this anyway, though it looks like the problem has gone from the "have access to the df directory". External resource directory? But that wouldn't be a true problem for your suing, so maybe a dependency install failure??

[1] I'm making assumptions here.
It could be a dependency error, but I've checked so many times that I have all the dependencies, so I'm not sure.
