DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Since carts can launch magma and water, can they be timed to collide in air?
« on: May 19, 2014, 01:50:25 pm »I want to make an obsidian gun that can collide magma blobs with water blobs at the edge of the map so that I can wall off the whole thing with obsidian, closer than I could do with actual walls.I've never heard of this producing anything but steam, but that's an interesting experiment.

Can I collect the two kinds of blobs in one cart?I can't see how. Once you submerge the cart, you fill it with 833 magma or water (about 2/7 worth). Once it's filled, it won't take more in.

Also, is there any way to launch them diagonally?Yes. Once they're skidding you can use sideways rollers to 'aim' the carts. Roughly a 45 degree arc was attainable by people who did much more science than I did. Unfortunately I can't find the thread, but I'm 95% sure it was Urist Da Vinci and cartloads of spears... and puppies. However he posts a LOT so going through his history is like reading through a dictionary if you're not into modding.
This thread, however, has a lot of information on flight and aim choices: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126669.msg4286300#msg4286300In short, though, you're not going to get the precision you want. Think 'shotgun', not 'sniper rifle'.

After I wall the map off, I'd like to make some kind of deal that periodically forms obsidian in the air and then lets it fall on the map, so the surface is shelled with caveins every so often.I believe you're the first person looking to randomly cave in the surface. I'm not sure how it could be done, personally.
