Life Advice / Re: Synced folders, clouds?
« on: February 10, 2015, 02:39:54 pm »
https://owncloud.org/

OwnCloud will do just about everything that Dropbox does, and it's free. File encryption, secure-channel communications, the whole shebang. You'd have to be more than passingly familiar with Linux to get it up and configured the way you like, but once it's up it's up.

Is there a reason you'd like to encrypt the files before you store them? You can configure OwnCloud to accept sync over SSL, then just have the server keep all its internals encrypted on the drive. Using SSL to encrypt communications is much easier than having your own stuff encrypted before it gets uploaded.

What do people do for that these days?

[/walloftext]

What do.

Some things that might help out here:

Protip: When asking someone out, whether it's a casual thing or someone you really like, you can get good results by implying that you've already got plans and then inviting them to join you. Example: You have a coworker you'd like to take to some new Pho restaurant (or whatever). Instead of saying, "Would you like to go have lunch with me at Pho Shizzle?" which implies that you're trying to make plans around them and their lunch habits, instead say, "I'm gonna go have lunch at Pho Shizzle. Care to join me?" The idea being that you're ALREADY going there, but they can come if they like. You're giving off an inclusive and friendly vibe by implying you already have plans but you'd like their company. You're also removing any pressure from them, because they don't feel like they're going to ruin your day by saying no (which some people just don't want to deal with). If they DO say "no", simply say okay and carry out your plans anyway, reinforcing that air of confidence, and ask again some other time. It seems puerile and stupid, but it WORKS. Human psychology at its finest.

Protip: You will NEVER have as much control over others' opinion of you as you do over your own actions. If you want people to appreciate you or notice you, YOU are the one who has to improve. Ignore others and their opinions. Take a little time to pay attention to the things like grooming, hygeine, etc., start an exercise program to help your appearance a smidge, that kind of thing. Once you're feeling better about yourself in general, you'll feel better around other people. That, my friends, is confidence. Start in small ways, focus on improving yourself for your own sake, and everything else WILL come around on its own. A self-confident nerd is an attractive nerd.

Protip: For Beard's sake, DON'T EVER try to find a long-term relationship at a bar, no matter what your gender or preferences. If you're a male, you should know that the crowd of man-whores scoping the "scene" to hook up with random bar trash have been playing that game a lot longer than you have, so you've got fierce competition over girls that you probably didn't want in the first place. If you're a woman, you're basically limiting your options to the kinds of guys who try to find women at a bar, e.g. man-whores trolling for bar trash. Don't do that. Looking for a relationship at a bar is like an outdoor seafood market in the middle of Nevada: You might like the selection now, but there's a REASON it's so cheap. Stay away, you'll be healthier. For better results, try meeting people at everyday places. Coffee stands, grocery stores, school, work, etc.

Hang in there, fellow Dorfers. You got this.

I had a 1050-year world just now in less than 5 minutes, definitely an improvement over 34.11. We'll see how the frame rates turn out, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wheres the iron at?
« on: April 06, 2014, 09:41:32 pm »
To maximize the amount of sedimentary layer levels, you can look for more z-levels over ground at embark. (Correct me if i'm wrong)
I find the opposite, usually. The further away I get from mountains and the like, the more iron ores I tend to find. Semi-flat is what I look for. Sedimentary layers usually include flux stone, so setting the site finder to "Multiple" for shallow metals and "Yes" for flux is a good start.

The biggest obstacle I had back in my earlier days was depending on the presence of volcanoes. Setting your worldgen to have high volcanism is basically asking for NO sedimentary rock whatsoever. Embarking next to a volcano is almost impossible get along with flux and iron, which is probably why it's one of the most requested things on the Worldgen Cookbook thread. And once you've got iron, finding bituminous coal is the next impossible thing. I've had 2x2 embarks with over 22k iron, and no coal or trees in sight. Steel was problematic.

Eventually you realize that ANY metal is so much better than nothing that bronze or copper armor / weapons are perfectly fine to use. Iron/steel can come later, once everyone's all trained up. If you end up on an otherwise excellent map and you're only missing iron, just save up for what you can and melt down iron crap from the caravans and Goblin Christmas. Train your metalworkers by making and selling small mountains of copper armor and axes. Then use that precious precious iron to make masterworks a little at a time. Honestly, there are almost NO enemies you come across in the first few years where iron makes a difference but copper won't.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tattered Clothes Stockpile
« on: March 31, 2014, 08:54:01 pm »
My solution, from a different thread:
  • Designate a 1-tile garbage dump zone directly on top of your trade depot.
  • Make sure that zone is the only active garbage zone.
  • Use the DFHack command "cleanowned scattered x". All the unworn clothing with "x" wear or more will be marked for dumping.
  • Wait for all your dwarves to move the clothes to the garbage dump zone. Resume normal dumping if you've got a different zone elsewhere.
  • Periodically you can repeat this just by activating that zone and using "cleanowned scattered x" again.
At this point all the clothes will be on top of one tile of your trade depot and safely forbidden. Leave them there until the next caravan, then when they arrive just d-b-c that tile and go to designate items for trade. All your old clothes will be at the top of the list since they're 0 tiles away from the depot. I made a macro that selects the first 10 items on the list, so I can just hit Ctrl-P a couple times to go through it all, but whatever works.

Macros will save the day.

I start with my standard equipment, and record a macro of me doing it. Then whenever I make a new squad I hit Ctrl-P to assign them my standard armor kit, then pick a weapon for the squad and they're done. No fuss.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Abandon task could not find path?
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:39:25 am »
Just as it says on the tin.  Your dwarf was assigned a task and the objective of said task is now in a place that the dwarf can't find a walkable path to. Happens to me a lot if, say, a dwarf starts a project requiring a stone or piece of fruit or something laying on the surface but I just shut the entrance to the fortress.

Rock tumblers are used by jewelers and geology enthusiasts to smooth out rocks. They basically make a slurry of water and an abrasive compound,  something like silica sand, then throw some rocks into a cylinder with the slurry and let it spin for like a month. The rocks come out smooth.

10
Mine the sand wall first. It will leave a sand floor underneath it. Designate a sand collection zone over that and you're set.

Could you also make them woodcutters instead of hunters? Make a small mountain of copper axes to train your weaponsmith and then they'll arm themselves automatically. Or do woodcutters not use their axes in a fight?

You can try the turtle route. Defensive skills plus shields, and your militia can wield two shields and bash everything to death. I seem to recall someone else doing this with great success.

If you're building up your wealth slowly, then it can take a while for snatchers and ambushers to think your fort is worth their time. I think once your created wealth goes above ☼80K or so then you'll see them much more often, especially if you end up killing a bunch of them. But if they're in reach of your embark, they'll show.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mods you make every game
« on: June 12, 2013, 01:02:00 pm »
I just started using [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] and I'm never going back.  I love having more choices for embark and different pets brought by migrants.

Oh, and cast names, e.g. all female dogs are bitches, so I know who goes in the cage.
Throwing bitches into cages? That gives me an idea, only somewhat related to your version... I hope that wasn't too misogynistic, heh. But the penal colony I've been planning really ought become more manageable if I split them into sections after gender.
I can just picture the artifacts now...

"This is a granite statue. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. On it is an image of a bitch in leather. The bitch is howling."

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: They don't haul
« on: June 12, 2013, 12:58:35 pm »
Try to keep most things at default settings until you get the hang of the interface and how stockpiles/workshops/orders work. It's hard enough to learn the game without fiddling around in the nitty-gritty of the stockpile options.

Also, if you accidentally hit "a" while looking at the stockpile it would set it to only accept from links. Make sure it says "Accept from anywhere" on it. Though you said you've got 1 dwarf hauling there now, so you're probably okay on that account. It sounds like a wheelbarrow problem, as these guys have said.
