So, Amberjewel finally does die. But not to a yeti rampage or miasma demon or regular demons or even a mundane tantrum spiral. No, Amberjewel dies from all of the coffins and corpses. They didn't even reanimate!
Dammit. We really should have built that atomsmasher.
Amberjewel ain't dead yet. Has this here settlement crumbled to it's end? No. It'll carry on. I know my compy isn't near as powerful as some of those running around here, and I was able to function without too much difficulty.

I don't know anything about DF hack. I cannot comment.

THAT DID NOT GO AS PLANNED

I ended up having to draft my entire fortress into pummeling those guys, after they killed the first two waves of slightly-trained ex-miners, and my military. Then the second ambush arrived. I lost 32 dwarves, all my grazing livestock, and a few dogs. Now everything's a horrible mess, and I'm trying to pick up the pieces...

Edit: And my head Miner's gone berserk. He killed twelve dwarves before my new Commander performed a drop-kick-cum-curbstomp to his face.

My mayor's also claimed the Butcher Shop, this should be good.
See? You are rapidly approaching fun! Also, ambushes often, perhaps usually, occur with more than one squad, with subesquent squads appearing when you send troopers out to deal with the first goblins.

If you know what you are doing with the equip screen, you can have your miners use their picks as weapons.

Let's recap: you have a breeding program for roc birds in a clear glass bubble under a sea of magma, where you live, below the crust of the earth and just above hell, next to a temple you've built for child and puppy sacrifices and a facility for reanimating the dead for military training purposes. You're growing crops on semi-molten rock.

If there's silence, I'm sure it's because most of us really don't know what to say anymore.

Assign a zone as a meeting area and your animals, as well as any bored dwarves, will gravitate to it.

Don't worry too much. You have ~20 dwarves, and some military, yes? You will be fine as long as the lashers don't murder your crossbow dwarf instantly.
I actually have ~120 dwarves, I'm just really new.

The FUN thing hasn't quite sunk in yet, so I'm just fretting over losing more of my dwarves. It may be possible that I worry too much about them; I was a bit stunned when I saw real combat for the first time and the Marksdwarf squad's prodigal daughter was immediately shot through the heart.
Embrace the fun. Dwarves will be lost. That is what coffins are for.

The fortress will soldier on. The fortress MUST soldier on.

I didn't really catch on to the FUN thing until this moment, which was ~2 years into playing.  I never looked back.

I love tantrum spirals. The recovery process is my favorite part of DF. You have (1) No labor, (2) Corpses everywhere, and (3) insufficient coffins. Beware the ghosts!

Savagery and good or evil. No volcano. Metals optional. Sand. Often a beach or a desert. Wind.

Typically, I am looking for a creature (giant tiger, unicorns, Ice wolf, elephant, hippos) and could care less about most of the resources the map comes with. The only thing that is going to matter is how many candy spires there are anyway, and I can trade for steel parts.

My, pick demanding cat liking, master wood burning king has been killed due to a random tantruming metalsmith beating his skull in. I'm really kinda upset. I liked that king. I would imagine a king going to work burning wood all day, smelling of ash and campfire. A peasants job.

Though, I have to approve of a low class metalcrafter getting so pissed off that he murders the royalty. Fight the power!

Food shortage? What? Huge plots farm plots and thousands of food/booze for 50 dwarves?

Its that kind of thinking right there that makes everything go all WTF!?!

I was so drastic as to take apart all of our farms. Maybe all the bugs crawled out of the farm plots and into the fortress, bugging the save...

Also, helmets. You gotta toggle replace clothing or your dwarves won't wear em.

Ok, downloaded that and will start playing again tomorrow morning.  Any other tips?
The dwarves spend endless amounts of time hauling things back and forth accross the fort. This doesn't need to happen. We don't need any of the non adamantine things outside. We don't need most of the things inside. We don't need more bone bolts. We have enough crossbows to arm each dwarf at max population twice over.

The most pressing AJ concern is getting out of FPS hell. Be prepared for a year of dump fortress. It can be magma dumping or atomsmashing, doesn't really matter. But all of those bones, teeth, outside clothing/goblinite can/should be destroyed.

My bugged save I built a ~100 lvl garbage chute to the magma sea. Then the game crashed. It was useful because you could dump things from anywhere in the fortress and not have a ~250 distance treck.

The other two semi-pressing concern is getting a bit of a military rebuilt, and hauling corpses. You are going to need to build coffins. It would be useful to build mason shops closer to the stones, and decommissioning the current mortuary.

Finally, the minetrack in the pyramid is set to "ride," which means it is set to break the legs of whoever rides it. It needs to be disabled. The 3 minecart goblin grinder is set to "push", which would also injure your dwarves. I recommend disabling it, cleaning out the garbage inside, burying the corpses.

I am happy to see AJ carrying on. Good luck.

Also, Remember: If you don't have your equipment set to replace clothing, your dwarves won't wear metal helmets. This reduces the viability of your melee dwarves tremendously, as in blows to the head --> Death. Check your active military's inventory to see if they are wearing the proper helm.

Alternatively, you can wall off the caverns, and no FBs (or any other cave creatures) will ever spawn.

your insanity boldness is an inspiration!  :o
I'm still trying to figure out how best to deal with the first caverns lol
I find they submit to farm plots easily enough.
