Flint Westwood - Blue squad - Sector 3

Keep on mapping the anomaly towards sector 2.

"I'll follow the anomaly a bit inside the other zone. I bet it ends soon. Just want to see where."

((Oh well, looks like I overreacted. I thought the anomaly was much larger. Too bad nobody will be there to watch it sink in the crater. Would be a beautiful (and interesting) sight.

EDIT: Oh, and I propose the symbols -↑ and -↓ for the newly explored zones in Sean's map.))

@Bishop: "Okay, we'll keep on mapping, but I don't like this. If we don't hear from home team after the anomaly passes, I'm going back, with or without you."

@Base Team: "Damn it Simus, just get your team in the shuttle and fly to us or Miyamoto. Don't take risks when there's no reason to do so. Don't you remember what happened to the previous team?"

Keep mapping around the motion speed anomaly.
Try to convince base team to board the shuttle and fly to us or to Miyamoto, by reminding them that the previous team died because they underestimated alien anomalies, that alien shit are unknown and unsafe, that we don't know if the base will hold, that the shuttle might be damaged by the anomaly if left there, by using the phrase "Pneumatically driven love thrust!", anything that might get them in that shuttle and out of that zone.
((Nothing to do this turn besides map, so why don't I make a speech roll?))

"Wait a minute... if this thing is coming from zone 6 and moving towards zone 1, that means that if it keeps going, it will end up here! Good thing we're moving towards zone 8 then."

((Also, good work with the map Sean. Added it to my notes along with some sector mapping statistics. I'm also keeping a planned actions/experiments section so that we don't forget to do anything back at base or when passing near a zone, so if you have thought of an experiment or action or project that you would like to see listed there (NO BICYCLES! (just kidding, I do not discriminate)) send me a PM.
@Radio Controlled: I'll be happy to draw the team's paths and objectives once you have decidede where we should explore next. Although that decision would probably take a while, what with us having explored less then half of our sectors and the crisis back at base.))

((That's what you get for complaining you're bored. Steve saw your attempt to tinker, while he had strictly forbidden it, and now he is punishing us. Pray for redemption!))

@Simus: "You don't have to stay there Simus. You can come here with us until the anomaly passes."

@Bishop: "Should we go back to base blue leader? If there is damage we will need to repair it immedietly. Although, since the base has survived thus far, it's probably safe. Except if that thing is something like the planet's defence system and we've somehow triggered it."

"Hey, I know splitting up isn't usually a god idea, but since this zone's dangers seem easy to locate, how about two people go explore around the fast zone and two go explore around the slow zone? It would save us some time."

((Also, maybe we should begin lists for things we need to take on further expeditions. I don't know if you want to keep track of this too, Parisbre, but here it is:))
((Nah, that would be a very long and ever changing list. And I'm not responsible to tell people what to bring with them. It's their choice and it would be wrong for me to start telling people what to do. And keeping the notes is already hard enough without having to account for all the possible ways of messing with an anomaly. Ever since I've started keeping this list I've began appreciating piecewise's work even more. Managing all the info on all the characters on all of his games, doing so artfully and remembering little details about people...))

((EDIT: By the way, looking forward to your treatises.))

((Speaking of notes, notes updated.))

((I love the autonomy! We've managed to organize ourselves, so there are no problems there. And the planetoid! It's like somebody locked me in a toy store, I've only barely explored the first stall and found some of the most interesting toys in the world. If all the zones (and what lies beyond the border) are as interesting as the ones we've seen so far, I'm afraid we may not explore them all in time.))

@Simus:"Hey, Nest, you saw that? Looks like anything accelerating can't safely enter the fast zone. Could you remind everyone to watch their step, just in case?"

Keep mapping around the fast zone.Throw a chunk of rock in it about the size and mass of a mapping drone and see what happens. Check the drone for a way to acomplish this: throw it in the zone, have if activate once it touches the ground (or after some time passes) and then return to the border and shut down its thrusters before passing the border (I'm assuming drones can survive a small fall). If Bishop goes somewhere else follow him instead. EDIT2: And rocks, don't forget to throw rocks where I'm going.

"Anybody has any idea on how to send a mapping drone inside the fast zone? Maybe set it on a timer or something?"

((And if you guys back at base are bored you can always repair the morgue or refuel the shuttle or take a look at the vehicles or try to improve our equipment or prepare our equipment for the next expedition or try to build something helpful. No need to stare at screens all day.))

((Edit: And I just thought of a method we could have used to check the effects of zones on living things. We could have gotten the doctor to give us some guinea pigs that can survive in zero atmosphere (or alternatively sow some cute little spacesuits). Damn it, why didn't I think about this on ship?))

"But anyway, I've been wondering, since you're an actor. Did you read a script, or did you make your own lines? Just a question I ask when I meet actors. And for that matter, what roles did you play?"
" 'When I meet actors'? You've met many? Are you a man of the trade, Foureyes?

Well, anyway, I did anything really. Horror films, science fiction films, historical films, remakes of old movies, romantic films, presented game shows... But mostly action movies. You see, there was a demand for propaganda films, and what better propaganda films than movies full of shooting heretics aliens and mutants working for the devil, trying to destroy the world? Kept the population happy and passed the messages the theocracy wanted.

I began my career making erm... let's just say those were films violating the government's law for decency. The producer then managed to get enough money to get a permit and go legal and I starred in his first real film, "They came from intergalactic space!". Really imaginative title, right? he he he. And after that I got an agent and I never stopped working. I was always in a film or a TV show or something else, some times all of them at once. I didn't care whether I was the hero or the villain, the lead or making a guest appearance.

When filming there wasn't usually enough leeway for me to change lines, mostly because my lines consisted of 'There's no room in this town for an abomination like you.' or other such cliches and one-liners. However I did a pretty good job when speaking in public or in the rare occasion I acted in theater. People always told me my speeches were very moving. But I guess you can judge that for yourself, if the need or desire ever exists for a speech or small improvisation."

((And I was going for less of an evil maniac laugh and more of a evil witch laugh.))

"Wait, Flint... WHAT?! Are you drunk or something?! Do you need a therapy? Or is it some elaborate joke I did not get? I haven't really socialized much since I lost my vision and until I got here, so I may be a little off. But....WHAT??"

"Why? Don't you like the name kinglet for the drone? Oh, you mean the 'fly my pretties' thing. It's from one of my movies, 'The Warlock of Boz'." ((Actually, even though this quote is usually attributed to Wizard of Oz, the actual line was 'Fly! Fly! Fly!' thus making the previous quote a case of memetic mutation. And now I've burdened your mind with another useless factoid *evil maniac laughter*.)) "Yeah, the mutant witch has been cornered by our brave heroes in her tower, so she sends out her genetically modified avian abominations to stall them while she escapes. Really depressing movie if you ask me. Cyborg in a futile search for a soul, human-lion hybrid abomination forced into slavery and death..." *sigh*

"And to answer your questions, just because I'm crazy, doesn't mean I need therapy. And I only get drunk on my spare time, never while on a mission."

((I've got to agree with Sean on that one. I have given him a background that justifies a bit of science knowledge so that it seems OK in character to say some things, like the time-gravity correlation, but making a small speech about conflicting hypotheses about alien anomalies seems a bit too much. Plus, it would feel like cheating. EDIT: And just so that there are no misunderstandings, I'm not saying that people speaking without speech skill are cheating. I'm saying that *I* would feel like *I'm* cheating myself, if that makes sense.

And, speech and charisma aren't useless. I would have never gotten that child drunk enough to sleep if it weren't for my charisma skill.))

"Kinglet 1 is in the air, I repeat, Kinglet 1 is in the air. Fly my pretties! Fly!" *evil witch laughter*

Throw some rocks sideways, so that they pass through both zones and see what happens (at least one going from the fast to the slow one, one going from the slow to the fast one and one hitting the boundary right in the middle). Send the drone to explore the fast zone. If the drone finishes up very quickly (or gets destroyed) move on to the normal zone and send a drone to explore that one too. EDIT2: Rest with Bishop while waiting for the second drone to finish.

Any peer reviews?))

Flint Westwood - Blue Squad - Sector 3

We're gonna have to find a way to handle this since colors are limited. I'm thinking using a rather messy but effective system of labeling subhexes with numbers and then having a key on the bottom of the map. Since there isn't room on the map to add text to each little hex.
((Fine by me.))

@Simus:"Uhh, Canary Nest this is Blue Peafowl. Are you seeing this? Any idea how this could be happening? I'm no scientist, but I thought gravity and time were connected. Any suggestions for experimentation? The Wastes of Time is sounding like a perfect name for this place right now..." ((And, light changing speed should at least get refracted a bit, shouldn't it?))

@Bishop:"So, what do you say blue leader? Send in a drone?"

Unless Bishop protests, send a mapping drone to map the sector. Then continue marking the time distortion (with a different color depending on the effect if possible) and scraping ground samples (not too many, don't want to be carrying lots of useless dirt containers). If Bishop orders me something else, do that instead.

EDIT: Idea! Try to find the border between the fast and slow zones. Is it something gradual or a straight line? If it's gradual, could someone pass through that area? If I find the border, mark that area differently.

((Also, this zone would be incredibly useful for computers. I'll crunch the numbers tomorrow and see just how much faster/slower time passes in those zones. You think I could build a supercomputer like that by using a gravity auto manipulator?))

"Command, do we have any caution tape and sticks or the like at the base? Or chalk for that matter? I think we should begin marking these anomalities on the ground as well as on the map starting from out second hike. Or maybe we should head back right now to get the necessary materials."

"Well, I DO have some cans of spraypaint in my backpack. You could use those. Here, catch." said Flint as he reached into his bag and gently lobbed Vich a can of spraypaint.

((Hey, Thearpox, how come you haven't yet began criticizing my backstory? Simply waiting for me to write more? Just asking because the way you worded it
And Parisbre, do you mind if I nitpick/investigate your character backstory? Because I like nitpicking, but I don't want to make you suffer through it unless you want to.
I was expecting an unstoppable onslaught of criticism that would force me to give up on the backstory and cry about my lack of writing skills the moment I said it was OK. I'm kinda feeling like Wile E. Coyote, holding a piece of dynamite that should had exploded but hasn't done so... yet. :) ))

((Edited action to include the distribution of spraycans.))

Flint Westwood - Blue squad - Zone 3

"Hmmm... That's interesting."

Science time! Throw some more rocks and try to determine where this slow-mo area begins (how high, how wide, does it move, etc). Mark the boundary with spraypaint. Fire a short laser burst at the ground inside the slow-mo zone and at a hovering stone and observe the results (does light travel at the speed of light, does it diffract, does it move strangely, do the pieces of ground boiled by the laser move slowly, etc). If my previous observations show it is safe, try to put one half of an open sample container in the slow-mo zone and scrape a ground sample, while I'm holding the other half safely outside the zone.

EDIT: Distribute spraycans to the rest of the team so that they can use them to mark the edge of the slow-mo zone.

@Simus: "Anybody has any good ideas on how to test if this thing slows down time or is just viscous? Simus, you're the science officer, what do you say?"

@Bishop: "Should we try to destroy it or just bypass it? Should we send a drone? Blue leader?"

((Our objective is to explore those regions, so I don't think order matters. However I would suggest leaving the weird radioactive blue glow zone for the end.))

"Our suit cameras are now linked to the CCR. Awaiting your orders blue leader."
((Can you repost the short trip map for the perusal of team leaders, or at least provide a link to the post?))
((Nah, those maps are useless, I simply drew those to demonstrate path patterns, not actual paths. I had blue team's path passing through the crater. You have both your objectives and the planet map in the notes on my sig, if you dont remember where you should go. Those should be enough for the team leaders to decide where to go first.))

((Edit: here you go. Just make sure to check those paths, unless you want to try walk through the crater or inside a radioactive zone.  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=106279.msg4103874#msg4103874

@Bishop:"Our suit cameras are now linked to the CCR. Awaiting your orders blue leader."

@Zephyris:"Hey, doc. Looks like we're in for a long walk. If you get tired, just hop on me." said Flint, as he noticed Zephyris was the only one without an exoskeleton.

Follow Bishop's orders. If we move out this turn, throw rocks with my slingshot every once in a while and look for anything unusual, both in the way they fly and the effect of their landing. If Zephyris asks, give her a ride.

EDIT: Also, be on the lookout for any signs of the previous team (tracks, equipment, garbage from eaten food). And take a couple of cans of spraypaint with me, just in case.
