DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread

Does leaving a farm plot fallow for a season improve fertility?

No, there is just nothing planted that season. I set fields to fallow if I overproduce certain plants after a while.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Reclaim crashes the game on embark

Are you playing with compressed saves on? This can sometimes cause save game corruption. Maybe your abandoned fort is somehow corrupted. Can you reclaim other forts or embark, abandon and then reclaim in other places?

In some screens the dwarfs last name gets translated to english, in some instances you should see both, like when k over a dwarf.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Known causes of crashes
« on: November 25, 2012, 01:24:03 am »
The only crash I ever had was after tingling with DFhack to change some item materials.
From the lack of reading much around here about crashes and my own experience I think that in an unmodded DF crashes seem pretty rare.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Necromancer Dwarf in my civ
« on: November 25, 2012, 12:06:00 am »
Since you guys are here, below are the legends of my civ's general. Do you know if he will be friendly if/when he arrives in the fortress? He learned the secrets in 99, and i set my world at 100, so he still didn't leave the civ.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Generals will only come to your fortress if they are married to your king/queen, so you probably won't see him if that is not the case.

yeah...
I haven't played DF in around a year or so, so this whole Necromancer citizen thing was new to me.  I guess I didn't realize that these characters would show up and wander around the outskirts of my fortress, raising everything they could spot.  It never occurred to me that somebody who is essentially hostile would show up in Dwarf Therapist.

Once I cleaned up the mess outside they wandered into the fortress proper and when they got spotted by a local it called them out as an invader and I sent the militia to squash 'em.  No zombie bacon for me, I guess.

They were not part of your civ, just a normal necro ambush. If you have a necro adventurer migrate to your fort, he will behave like everybody else except that he raises everything dead he sees if you don't burrow him.
The only other possibility to get necros in your civ I think is when a monarch or his spouse becomes a necro and migrates to your fort. They will apparently show up as friendly in the unit list, unlike adventurer migrants.

If reclaim won't work you can get the world gen data from legends mode, re-gen the world and start from scratch in your old spot.

Engravings can be of things a dwarf likes or hates, but also of things that other dwarfs like/hate. Sometimes they engrave things they have seen recently, like flies or other vermin. I had a dwarf engrave pictures of plaster casts after he broke his arm and had to wear one for a while :).
I have read somwhere that dwarfs who admire tradition are more likely to engrave historical images. There are several categories of these:
- The image of your civ and your government.
- The history of your embark region. If you embark in several biomes only one seems to count. These get engraved the most, which leads to countless images of unimportant dwarfs getting killed by something in world gen etc.
- The history of your fort. This includes the foundation of the fort, noble appointments, enemys and dwarfs getting killed, creation of artifacts and masterworks, dwarfs settling in your fort. They seem to appear in that order, so you'll have more images of the foundation of your fort than of masterful roasts.
- There seem to be almost no images of the history of your civ outside your fort/region, except on coins.

The regional thing is a bit annoying, in a fort that is 30 years old and has a lot of history I still get an awful lot of engravings of a dwarf killed by an ettin in my embark region in world gen.

If you use DFhack, there are commands for that.
fixmerchants will enable trade agreements with the humans.
fixdiplomats will cause the elves to send you a diplomat who negatiates a tree cutting limit, I never use that so I don't know if this enables trade agreements too.

A bedroom that's assigned to a married dwarf is also automatically assigned to that dwarf's spouse.

They can't both sleep in the same bed at the same time, though.  Nor have I ever seen them attempt it -- but then, I haven't really been watching for it.

I have seen a dwarf, his wife, and their 13 year old child (he came in a migrant wave and hadn't hit adulthood yet) all asleep at the exact same time in the same bed. Each of them had the Zs.   34.11

I can confirm that. It seems somewhat rare though. In most cases dwarfs have slightly different sleep cycles and will not attempt to sleep in a bed that is already occupied.

The first two waves of migrants (2-10 dwarfs) are hardcoded, so you will end up with 11-27 dwarfs no matter what. FBs come without any triggers, as do necromancers. Keeping wealth low definitely helps in delaying sieges.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pus everywhere
« on: November 20, 2012, 02:50:49 pm »
I have had several cases where some minor injuries like broken fingers or toes or even broken fingernails (all these don't show up when you v-w over a dwarf, you can just see it in the dwarfs description) did not heal despite being treated with other injuries at the hospital. These dwarfs would leak pus when cleaning themselves at the well. Two of the dwarfs died of infection, one months later, one years after sustaining injuries. One is still alive and well, he is not "susceptible to disease" like the other two, but his fingers are still broken after more than 20 years. My hospital works perfectly well otherwise and I have plenty of soap and everything, so it's just bad luck I guess.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Good ways to capture wild animals?
« on: November 18, 2012, 11:17:58 pm »
Having lots of cage traps is the most effective thing. Maybe you can figure out a path that most animals will likely pass or a point where they spawn and place traps there. I had a tundra fort where almost all animal herds walked into my cagetrapped entrance, but this is somewhat rare.

Check if the use of obsidian is restricted under z - Stones. Ores and most economic stones are restricted by default.

I give them these nicknames with Dwarf Therapist.  Its been wiping out their first name, not sure if that's a bug or not, but even with it, its still nice to see their role, right up front on the job list, to see who is actually No Job, without having to taskswitch out of DF, or read deep into the DF submenus.

You can set nicknames to be centralized in the d_init.txt, that should preserve the original names.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Fortress Divided
« on: November 18, 2012, 08:05:36 pm »
They'll probably form relationships faster and mainly within their industry, which could mean a tantrum quickly spirals and knocks out an entire sector of the economy.  On the other hand it might only knock out that industry.

I generally find that relationships are really unproblematic, provided that the dwarfs are happy otherwise. In my fort with 440+ dwarfs everyone is friends with everybody. When three dwarfs died in a short period of time most dwarfs remained "ecstatic" and only a few had drops down to "quite content". There are also positive thoughts from relationships that stack with the other good thoughts, so there is no way this could turn into a tantrum spiral if the dwarfs are not very happy to begin with.
