I think we can all agree that they're both delicious.
Like with most animals, it depends on the sauce.

If you guys are bad, it's your own damn fault. Look, you're overthinking things. Girls? They're just boys who sit down to pee and have a better chance of smelling nice. If you're interested in talking to a girl, walk up and say hey. Ask an open ended question to get their opinion. Use a compliment and mutual interests to gain rapport. You know, the same way you would with anyone else. The fear of rejection is worse than actually being rejected. Now quit being forever alone and do something about it if loneliness is a problem.

But....they might bite! :o
You know, that can actually be a good thing.

...Did GG just actually leave? Not just the thread, but the entire damn forum?
I hope not. One shouldn't take all these discussions too personally.

Isn't Egypt pretty much a super power compared to the rest of the middle east (well them and Iran) at least when it comes to military?
Yes, but they would have problems if they were surrounded by islamists on all sides, they have enough islamists in Egypt as it is (the still very influential Muslim Brotherhood). They have already gotten into minor fights with Libyan islamists, so it looks like they might intervene on that front. If something similar arises in their East plus their local islamists rise up...they might have a problem.

It surely is another source of refugees going to Lybia and to the sea.
I don't know about Nigeria, but there is a flood of refugees from other countries coming in, that the Libyan regime used to delay before. It's pretty messed up. I even met two refugees from Eritrea recently, one who had just requested asylum and one who freshly immigrated illegaly. That's really weird, on the one hand these guys have no chance here, on the other hand they have no chance at home either and I'd do the same thing in their place, they've been through some sick shit.

Though yeah, ISIS could easily spread itself to other trouble spots, they're just focused on Syria and Iraq at the moment. Doesn't mean copycat or affiliated groups could arise.
I guess it works like a franchise, if you claim you're affiliated, you're in. That is the danger of this new tactic with proclaiming a caliphate, Al-Quaida never did that.

Life Advice / Re: Moving to Canada?
« on: August 25, 2014, 06:17:45 pm »
I have no idea how immigration to Canada works (you'd have to find someone who has made the US->Canada transition themselves), but I guess it's something that should be well thought out, since you're not on your own, but responsible for a whole family.
Does the company you work for maybe have offices in Canada? A friend of mine considered emigrating from Germany to Sweden for a time, his company fully supported him, offered him a job there and even offered help with language courses, housing and stuff. He ultimately didn't go through with it, but it seems that big international companies do have advantages sometimes in that regard.

Actually it looks like Egypt's military regime is going to intervene in Libya, which is kind of nice for Europe and the US, so they don't have to do it directly.
If one was a bit cynical, one would have to say that leaving genocidal maniacs like Saddam, Gaddafi or Assad in place results in less net deaths than removing them. Especially Gaddafi in his later days had some very nice arrangements in place with everybody, while an unstable Libya is a huge problem for Europe, because of all the refugees making it over the mediterranean sea. And Assad is a clever bastard, by leaving ISIS be for a long time, he now looks like a very viable alternative again and might ultimately even get support from the West again.
This is all pretty screwed up. But with a threat like the Islamic State, everything is relative.

Useless fun factoids about national anthems: do these German and Austrian imperial anthems sound familiar to anyone? What a difference lyrics can make...

Guys, we had two threads locked over Ukraine and one over Palestine, now please don't stir up that giant hornet's nest that is the Belgian goods labelling crisis.

Right, the official condemnation is that last link I posted:
Quote
Today, in the course of the regular inspection of its premises, UNRWA discovered rockets hidden in a vacant school in the Gaza Strip. As soon as the rockets were discovered, UNRWA staff were withdrawn from the premises, and so we are unable to confirm the precise number of rockets. The school is situated between two other UNRWA schools that currently each accommodate 1,500 internally displaced persons.

282
HAs there been any evidence at all of Hamas storing rockets/munitions in actively used schools and hospitals?
Yes, even in a UN school.
You should at least read the headlines of articles you link to before posting them, since that says exactly the opposite of what you are claiming?
You're right. I overlooked that bold part.

Here is another one, also vacant, though UN staff there could imply that it was still in some kind of use.

Why would it require a big military presence? Because Israeli's wouldn't be willing to do it without one?
Israel probably wouldn't put soldiers at such risk, no. And I was never in the military, but I can't imagine what you have in mind that it would not require something that looks very close to total occupation. If you imagine it is that easy, you might have a very wrong image of the realities there, and also of the practical implications of such an idea. I mean, even in this hypothetical debate, we are not talking about a bad neighbourhood or something, it's more like a barely pacified warzone with what amounts to an army of enemies (Hamas is estimated to have 15000-20000 men under arms in Gaza).

Are the UNRWA schools and their security staff seen as "occupiers"?
Probably not, since they are not a military presence, certainly to a lesser extent than Israeli forces (their hated enemy) would be. Maybe UN troops could pull something like this off, though there is the problem from which country these are coming etc. Also UN forces have come under fire too in many cases, like in Lebanon for example. Islamists have no problem with attacking the UN, and depending where they come from, it might not make a huge difference to them (you know, Christians in the Holy Land and all that).
People generally tend to see foreign troops as occupiers, and with Israeli forces this would be much worse. I mean, even here there are some people who see the American troops here as occupiers, and that is an entirely different situation.

I understand that you mean well and all, but this seems very impractibale to me and in the current situation it's not very close to looking realistic (as unfortunately are most peace plans).

Have they ever proposed as a term of a peace agreement a carrot of some sort? Actually giving something to the Palestinians rather than just stopping some bad thing they were doing?
Without looking it up: They have offered an independent Palestine. They have released thousands of prisoners. They withdrew from Gaza and abolished the settlements there. Abolishing the settlements in the West Bank is controversial in Israel, many want to do it, many don't, some governments were pretty much willing to go ahead with it though, back when the 2 state solution seemed like it might happen.

Also remember that while there were peace talks with Fatah, all talks with Hamas are merely about ceasefires, since Hamas does not want peace.

HAs there been any evidence at all of Hamas storing rockets/munitions in actively used schools and hospitals?
Yes, even in a UN school.

The FGM story may be a hoax.
Luckily it really appears to be a hoax. According to this, the arabic document shared on twitter dates from last year and appears manipulated, it has gaps and erratic spelling.

Will the coalition's demise now lead to a parliamentary election in Ukraine?
From what I've read, they're aiming to have elections at the end of October.
