DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Werebeast Problem
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:56:30 am »
So my fortress was doing well, no deaths, besides a poor puppy stabbed by a kobold thief, When i got an announcement that a werechinchilla was attacking. Picturing the man sized rodent in my head i though " Oh how dangerous could it be?" Turns out it instantly slaughtered one of my hunters that was stalking unicorns. I sent my military of 5 decently trained dwarves, lost 1 instantly, and 1 other was bitten and sent to the hospital, but we killed the werebeast. I COMPLETELY forgot that bitten dwarves will transform, so a few moons later my macedwarf turns into a werebeast, kills 2 people and infects 2 more, now confined to the hospital. The way I see it, every time one attacks someone will get bitten, I put cage traps in my hospital to keep them from rampaging through my fort when they turn but, is there a better way to handle this?  ???

This pathetic thief just ran right into my cage traps and is now wasting away in my dungeon, but im thinking of dolling out some punishment, can you attack prisoners in cages? I plan on having some dwarves beat him senseless with wooden weapons. If not is there a way I CAN do this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Specific military skill training...
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:53:46 pm »
Is it possible to order dwarves to train a certain skill? For instance, I could use more wrestlers to help subdue these pesky Trogs while my swordsdwarves chop at it, Is there a way to have them train one certain skill or will they just do as the militia commander tells them? :-\

I do know that, but if they aren't equipped they usually do "Individual combat drills" or something unrelated.

Ive been down this road before, DF is a game that requires YOU to make up the fun. Use your imagination, build huge projects, I love to build massive Golden pyramids for my best fallen warriors, and I usually bury them with whatever killed them. Start an above ground fortress, embark in an evil area and wipe out undead.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Is a full-time military possible?
« on: July 27, 2012, 02:56:40 pm »
The title says it all, I just want to know if I can have a full time militia(maxed out units, none on leave from duty) without causing them to have a hissy fit. Because I realized that my units dont get much done if a few of them are off duty.

Good ideas all around! I honestly design my vaults in such a way to prevent thieves from making off with any stuff and in hope that when my fortress falls, I can visit it in adventure mode and see if the invaders were able to get past the horrors that I places around my goodies, or if the vault hallways are littered with bones of the poor sobs who couldn't.

Capture a minotaur, create a labyrinth, you know the rest.

Simple question, what kind of defensive measures do you guys take when defending you precious goods?(Crafts, jewels, rare metals)Or do you just make a big stockpile room and throw everything in there?

My last fortress had a vault of sorts. The entrance was guarded by a tame giant cave spider on a chain in a 3x3 room, so thieves would be spotted by the spider if they were dumb enough to brush against him.(He killed at least 8-9 kobolds) Past the spider was an Iron door that was kept tightly closed and forbidden at all times until things needed to be stored. A weapon trap with several axe blades guarded the door. Past the door were tight hallways, heavily trapped, and each type of good had its own vault, but to get to the vault you had to go through a room with several tame dangerous animals inside(I embarked in a savage jungle so lotsa giant lions and such.)

Doing pretty well on my current fortress but after breaching a cavern and lining the hallway with cages I have more Troglodytes,Cave crawlers,Dralthas,Cave ogres and other nasties then i know what to do with, most of the critters i catch arent trainable, so besides the usual Gladiator areana, anyone have any ideas on what to do with em?

I agree! ill keep posting if anything else happens!

Alright I changed it up a bit, hope it helps.

Is there a way I can do that without making a new thread?

Quite a few died, mostly miners and other civilians, but I lost a whole 10 squad from ambushes from Trogs and other cave nasties. I know I lost at least 20 dwarves, but I also havent been playing this for as long as some other people, I could have simply sealed the cave but eh...I wanted to experience some real combat, because I recently got the hand of the military system.

And im not sure what I would do for a part 2, I pretty much ended the war, im sure more Trogs will come by but for now that cave is blocked off. However I did get 2 forgotten beasts charge up the mineshaft, both pretty weak ones, A fly and a Lizard of some sort.
