DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can minotaurs destroy floodgates?
« on: August 06, 2012, 03:53:18 pm »
Oh.  I always seem to learn things the hard way in this game...  I guess I should count my dorfs lucky she left the critical floodgate for last.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can minotaurs destroy floodgates?
« on: August 06, 2012, 03:36:04 pm »
I had a minotaur closed off by floodgates.  Two of the floodgates are suddenly gone.  My dorfs can't get in there, so I know it wasn't them...

The room had a total of three floodgates, one to let water in, and another to let the water out, those are the ones that are gone, and the third, still in place and now quickly being walled off, is the fortress access.

Anyone know what could've happened to the floodgates?

I thought when I had magma smelters I didn't need coal to make pig iron and steel.  So how come my dorfs keep cancelling those jobs citing a lack of refined coal?  I keep burning wood to shut them up.  It used to be I just needed one charcoal to 'start the reaction' or something, and the dorfs would happily make steel all day as long as they had iron and flux.   The magma under my smelters is 7 deep.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dorfs won't weave

Supplies reserved for hospital will not be used for anything except hospital needs. You could try removing the hospital zone and after they take what they need put a new one.

Okay I removed the hospital zone and added a weave yarn into cloth job again.  They cancelled again for the same reason as before.  I double-checked the bins; I have two horse hair thread, a yak hair thread, and a sheep wool yarn.

Edit:  Also tried playing with stockpile configuration; tried adding a cloth stockpile near the loom.  First stockpile gathered 4 bins, but they wouldn't use the thread inside.  So I destroyed that stockpile and added one with no bins allowed.  After they filled that, I tried again but still same old story.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dorfs won't weave

My dorfs keep cancelling weave yarn to cloth because they need 1 unused collected yarn thread.  I have that.  Why don't they weave?

I think I read somewhere some kind of stockpile bug, like they won't find stuff if it's in a stockpile, so I destroyed the stockpile (the two bins of thread remained).

I also read dorfs will take the bins away to fill them up, and then you get cancellation messages while the bin is being carried around.  Both my thread bins are sitting in the hospital; I'm watching them and they don't move between the time I order the weaving job and it gets cancelled.  I just thought of checking if the hospital has the thread reserved or something, but it says 120000/75000 so I guess that means I have a surplus of thread in the hospital right?  Anyway I lowered it to 120000/15000 and they still won't weave.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: shift key

repeating key strokes by holding down the keys overloading most likely

No, that's not how it behaves.  In that case it would not stop and then start again after all I do is press shift.  You described it a lot better in your earlier post.

Got the pile down to mostly teeth and fingers. And man, are these dorfs tough now.

53
I hadn't realized the don't care thing was desirable.  That must be why a few of my dorfs are no longer unhappy - they do have that tag now.

54
Hmm, thanks for the advice.  I think I'm getting the effects already, without all the control.  I can't keep my melee dorfs away from what are now massive hordes of undead.   The main pile happens to be just outside an archer barracks, and the walls are already fortifications.   A few of the melee military unhappy for a while (they had also lost pets) and I was getting worried but it looks like that's passed.

Except my Hammerdorf captain is acting really weird, he's drowsy and wandering around by himself off to the east while his mates are up to their eyeballs in undead.

My god, is this normal?

Fighting:
Human necromancer Glazer Lar Dutothalo
Human necromancer Farmer Olith Upupado
necromancer Farmer Edem Reggikut
necromancer Butcher Monom Vaboktashem

In cage, and listed in U-> Others:
Aban Ensebiden, Dwarf Glassmaker necromancer

Deceased:
Inid Ebpeltath, Human Siege Engineer necromancer
Endok Ezarushat, Dwarf Brewer necromancer
Onec Ibutoquem, Human Diagnoser necromancer

Yup, when you embark, and see a Tower in nearby civs, get ready for wandering body parts, and undead seiges

Yeah these guys are real buggers!  Very difficult to find, and they come often.  Have two (edit: one now, because I threw the first two in a lava pit but caught another dwarf necromancer) in cages, and four (!) more (looks like three human and two dwarf, judging by the Reports screen) harassing me right now but I can't find them.  Trying to get rid of all bones, corpses etc. in an atom smasher but my dorfs can't keep up.

no, it's a known issue, I forgot the circumstances, but rest assured you're not the only one. I usually go back to desktop or whatever window I have open (usually this one) and then go back to DF and it's solved. It usually happened to me when I was accidentally pressing another key but a cursor and shift and suddenly it was moving and moving and unstoppable.

Yeah, when I went back to the game after making the original post, the problem was gone.  It happens to me as you describe, but I'm not sure what key it is.
I was thinking maybe Toady had coded in some key combination, e.g. Ctrl+Shift+Arrow to move the screen in the direction of Arrow, and not stop moving until you tell it to, using I don't know what key(s).

I have some partial animal skeletons, and also someone's right hand, re-animating and terrorizing my dorfs.  I'm not in an evil biome.  Is this because the pets haven't been buried properly, or some other reason?  How do I get rid of these things?

edit:  hmm okay I guess it's a necromancer.  Reading the wiki...

edit again:  Managed to catch him in a cage.

DF Gameplay Questions / shift key

Can someone tell me what is going on with the shift key?  My view keeps automatically going to the north... if I mash the keyboard for a while I can make it stop, but as soon as I press shift it starts up again.  What the heck is this?

He needs to fall over to be rescued. If he looses consciousness someone should carry him to the hospital.

Hmm, it looks like if he loses consciousness it will be from dehydration.

edit: Hey, I don't want to be a Bay Watcher; I'm an Escaped Lunatic!
