DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: 2014: Equal rights
« on: July 13, 2014, 01:12:45 am »
The dwarves live in a socialist utopia where, apart from a personal cupboard containing spare socks and a bare, mattressless bed, they share all possessions in common.

To be fair, that's the result of the dwarven economy being so unspeakably broken it had to be thrown in the bin.

Agreed. Dwarves love having stuff. They'll take pretty much as many possessions as you'll allow them.

Given how hard and slow breeding dwarves is already, it's hardly 'happy'
On worlds with no surviving dwarf civilisations, so no migrants, but lots of lovely reclaimable fortresses, it'd pretty much mean no game if you dwarfs didn't couple up in breeding pairs. You need alot of luck to get couples as it is without adding in the chance they'd couple the wrong way.
It also doesn't make a vast amount of sense for dwarf culture - which so far has been established as fairly conservative.

Is it really though? As far as I can tell there's already pretty much perfect gender equality. All jobs are doable by both sexes with no difference inherently in quality (of course), and as far as I can tell there aren't even masculine and feminine distinctions in names. I mean, this isn't directly related to same sex marriage in dwarf culture but it's just an example of an area where there isn't any discrimination or social rules like that.

(Really hoping this thread doesn't get super political, I'm just talking about the game)

Just loaded up the save; yeah man that's pretty cool. On a side note, I always love seeing how other people construct their fortresses.

I think it'd be pretty cool if gay marriage was a thing, sounds like a feature, not a bug.

I've always heard of people dropping, say, gobbos down 4-5 z levels onto an isolated area and using them for target practice but I just can't seem to manage it. I thought at first, "Oh I'll see if it will let me build a cage on a retractable bridge" and nope. I also mucked about with supports but can't see anything working there so I'm a little stumped. I figured plenty of you folks probably use a system like what I described so it'd help me if you'd share them. Thanks.

« on: December 24, 2013, 11:41:08 pm »
I haven't played DF in some unspeakable amount of time and upon returning I find I can't zoom in or out. I was under the impression that it was done with the scroll wheel on a mouse, but that's not working. Has this changed?

I suppose I should mention that I got a new PC, I'm using a Windows 8 PC now, anything else you might need to know just ask I guess.

Dude, are you some secret government agent or what? Why aren't you allowed to bring in phones and USB drives and whatnot? Sounds like maybe you should just play DF at home.

And a portmanteau is only such if it's recognized as an acceptable part of a region's language. Moar is not an accepted part of any language.

What do you mean? Guys is there an English language council that sits down and decides what words are acceptable or not?

lol

Pretty sure languages just evolve on their own, dude

Honestly? The fact so many people defend the use of meaningless gibberish is worse than using it. Should I post endless amounts of racial slurs just because other people do it? Will you attack anyone that dares to say it's wrong of me to use such words? Of course not, because you've been told it's uncool to use those words. But I see no distinction. They're perversions of the English language, and as such there is no reason to use them. And I'll continue to think poorly of anyone who thinks any slang is an acceptable form of communication.

I'm disappointed that you feel that way. You just refuted the theory that Dwarf Fortress attracts a crowd of nice people, I guess. Although I'm not sure what you're talking about; it is, literally, not meaningless. No, your example of racial slurs is what is meaningless. It's "uncool" to use racial slurs because it's bigoted and offensive, not because they sound silly. The fact that you see no distinction is an error in your perception, there is a clear distinction between internet slang words and insulting someone because of the color of their skin. I'd say that since so many people defended the use of internet slang means that maybe you should reconsider your position on the topic, and if you arrive at the same conclusion that it's meaningless gibberish, that's fine. At least you sat down and thought about it.

I'm not angry, just disappointed by the increase in the use of slang. I don't understand the obsession with it. I prefer complete, well thought out sentences. I know I'm in the minority, I accept that people learn to write and spell from Twitter instead of school. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or that I can't speak out about. Just as you can continue to butcher the English language I can continue to say you shouldn't.

It's not about it being a fad, the 'cool thing' to do. It's about it being more efficient, getting the same idea across in a shorter amount of time and an easier to read form. I'm not sure if you're talking about the absolute extreme of this, but I'm okay with things like "lol", "XD", "ik", etc.

A persons use of slang doesn't indicate them being less intelligent.

Well you just refuted the theory that Dwarf Fortress attracts a more educated crowd. That guy who posted the theory on the Lamb-Chapyblin dipole is going to be disappointed.

I don't know why the type of crowd DF attracts even crossed your mind. It's not a club for smart people, it's a collection of people who enjoy games. 0mG L0L DF |S S0 FUNN!!!1!

Chill out a little.

If you're Jesus, can't you raise the dead yourself?

(I apologize, I had to make that joke, I'd help but I never really embark in evil biomes so I don't know about them)
