Journal of "Puffer" Albel, miner.
So I've finally gotten him to retire. I've taken over the reins of the leadership, and we're finally gonna try to run this place right. No more narrow pathways, no more dwarves tripping over each other.
And we're going to build an obsidian farm. I can't believe that he never though of it. It'll be perfect for crafts to sell everyone. All the crafts except figurines, anyway. Those'll be saved. In a hole. For future reference. Don't ask.
Anyway, time to get back to work. Some migrants just arrived, the fort's up to twenty five. Time to pick up the useless slackers and stuff those wooden spears in their hands and put them in copper armor. See if they can't kill some kobolds with those twigs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you guys start your forts?

I've been building my forts the same way for a very, very long time. I always dig out hallways and then put workshops in niches, drop a level and build a dining room, and then my bedrooms, and expand to taste. Frankly, I'm tired of it. What's another way to go around fort design?

It's basically another atomsmashing. The scissor-bridge fort entrance works a lot like this. It flings troops into the walls and crushes them, or leaves them vulnerable to crossdwarfs. Really useful

Naked Menace could lead to some Hilarious results for sure. I think I have a new suicide squad. I'm thinking aesthetic planning, but I'd like a little more restrictions on that. how many z-levels do you guys want to lock me into? Aside from Magma forges, but those will also be locked this this many levels.

All right, I want ten dwarves, if that's just five points, and I'll equip them with level two copper and crossbows. I'm assuming this is seven points. And the last eight points into skills. If possible, can I have shield level replaced with crossbow? So:
