The way things are going, The dwarfs are pulling out more turtles than my fortress can possibly eat. However, there are a ton of salmon that I would love to catch if I ever get a chance.

It sounds like you have enough food. I'm also jealous of your shells  :-\

Also yeah, catch large fish and surround your fort entrance with trained carp and dodge-me traps on the bridge.

Heredetary research done by Slink in another thread (bad at posting links) indicates that very few attributes are inherited, besides that which is carried by the civilization as a whole.

By that I mean her findings indicated that height, facial features, size, material preferences and mood stats were basically "rolled from scratch" for every baby.  What she did find was that if everybody (or almost everybody) from your home civ has, say, white hair, then new arrivals in booze soaked diapers would have white hair as well.  It would be good, however, to do independent research to either confirm or contest these findings.

Don't worry. Toady will fix this so that physical attributes are rolled from a small number of weighted means of the dwarf's parents. The little useless thing may be a little heavier or lighter, but would likely land somewhere closer to one of the parents. Maybe. Who knows? Maybe he'll just go and simulate DNA. Talk about fun raw editing.

I'd risk taking a no-caves embark just for the pure ability to make the computer. How would one calculate said floating point integers?

I mean, for the first go, pong wouldn't even have to be playable. I imagine just a grid of hatches, opening to a pit of water to show pixels; blue would be white and whatever other colour would be black in this case. How would I make the computer track the positions of the ball so it could match the paddles, and calculate the movement of the ball?

I might totally just make one of a fort. It'd be a one-z-level fort. Or I'll make a .gif of every layer I'm on. Because I like my traps and labyrinths. I'd take caps every season so you can see the exponential explosion when the migrants decide to roll around.

So should the board be made of wood? I'm thinking yes, with grains of obsidian. If I do a checkerboard pattern I've gotta do it right and do marble and obsidian. And put chess pieces on them.
Marble and obsidian sounds good already. If you do chess pieces you gotta do exactly the same - black obsidian pieces and white marble pieces. Bonus points awarded based on the following:
    1 point for every generic dwarf pawn statue
    3 points for any horse statue representing knights
    3 points for any religious figure statues representing bishops
    5 points for any statue of the mountainhomes or your fort representing rooks
    9 points for any statue of your civ's queen
    9001 points for any statue of your civ's king
    9002 points for any statue of the leader of a civ opposing your civ
Mega-bonus for Dwarfen Logic playing chess.

Hmm... it could probably be done with creative Take-From and Give-To stockpiles, accessible/pathable only when the move would be legal and requested by the logic engine.

Actually, it would make for an interesting multiplayer/succession game.  A break from the usual DF game of Global Thermonulear War.

Hm. You're right. DF-Chess, and not HFS-chess either. Could be... Interesting. But with one move taking a few minutes, the upload/download wouldn't be easy. Unless each move used my constructed-wall pieces. Then they'd have to tear them down and build them over the right spot. Muahaha.

I'm playing chess on an 8x8 board...

My checker board is going to be 5x5 squares, at least. So I'll be doing generic pieces made through walls. I want to make it as big as possible, but I can't make that calculation without knowing how wide embarks usually are. I was hoping to find the info on the wiki, but it's not there. Guess I have to do it by hand. Sighh.

EDIT: That was easy. I just need to fit the largest board possible into a 190x190 area. 180x180 for a proper wood trim if I so desire. Which leaves plenty of room for each square to be 12x12. Up to 22x22 if I so wanted. I don't. Now I just need to find the center 2x2

DOUBLE EDIT: Wait shit the boards are 16x16. I can still do 12X12 and that puts me at 144x144. More than enough room for a six-tile wooden trim because FUCK ELVES. and because 150x150 is nice and pretty. Also should the "floor" of the board be an actual floor or should I take the extra time and make it walls?

EDIT: I wasn't thinking of a board at all when asking you guys haha. I was hoping for ideas that were "Overboard" in the sense of just crazy. Though the chess board hovering above my fort would be insane.

All right, I've genned a new world and started a new fort, and what does the RNG give me for a fort name? Overboards. I can't pass up the opportunity to make a megaproject dedicated to the fortress title.

So, how can I go overboard? Anyone got any good ideas?

I have indeed gone over-board. I'll be updating this thread after my first season, which should be later tonight.

IDEA: Giant, playable chess board. It won't be easy to play (They're going to be 10x10xat least 10 and constructed), but the pieces will be there.
