DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 16, 2014, 03:44:34 pm »
@fish 90% sure any metal is fine for the elves. In theory they should be annoyed that you fire up your forge with charcoal but nah.

Personally i give them prepared meals in stone pots :)

In my fort, i noticed that some of the merchants got stuck and seeing i haven't played in a while i just got my legendary swordsman to kill him. Bearing in mind the merchant was a dwarf...
It ended up that my two strongest swordsdwarf were now hostiled against my fort for killing him. Wonderful. I gave up eventually after one of them killed 7 other legendary fighters and tore various war beasts (giant cave swallows, giant cave spiders) to shreds.

Must admit though it was amusing watching the outside of my gate go nuts as i had about 70 animals there to ensure no thieves got through un-noticed and had set my entire military out the front also.
Looked like a 10 way game of chase was going on of various dwarves killing other dwarves.

Was a disappointing save anyway as the metal in the fort was tin and there were no goblins either.

Its clear to me that we need a trash compactor.  And to kill all outsiders, extra animals.

basically what i'll do very quickly and efficiently ;)

although be careful on killing trained animals as it makes very unhappy trainers if they're bonded with them.

no really. All clean will do is remove blood/bile/poop & stuff like that from the map, including from clothing. If this game been going on as long as i think, this should increase FPS a decent amount. The only possible error i can concieve is if you are collecting blood into barrels for whatever reason or possibly collecting poison.
Even then, the worst that happens is that the job gets cancelled as item no longer exists.

Removing corpses and useless stuff is generally pretty safe also, but takes a bit more practice and can probably wait till my turn ;) As far more likely you'll try and delete something a dwarf may possibly be manipulating.

Not entirely sure how much it'll help FPS, depends on how many dwarves etc are running around anyway. What usually lags everything is when underground rivers become not full or simply too many dwarves/units.

If there are any who need players imminently (i.e no-one is responding) i'm looking to join one soon.

what's the queue like? Depending on FPS i should manage a dwarven year pretty quickly.

Never done a succession fort, but playing atm and current fortress is too "me". Time to spread my insanity to another fort. Looking to have a go within a week and will finish by a sunday (i do literally nothing on weekends).

Let me know if you can hit me up soon! If given a weekend i should manage it, seeing i don't leave the house then.

Will check back regularly to see if there's any fun updates :)

Lastly if you agree, i can clear up some of the fort using DFHack which can greatly improve FPS. basically clean everything (will help one heck of a tonne) and delete some corpses or you can try it. But from the sounds of things you're running a little slow ;)

basically type "clean all" and you should get an improvement, cleaning some corpses & crap can take a little longer.

Flooded my fort while trying to make a well. Did you know that it's a bad idea to use a river as a source for a well? The dwarves that didn't drown ended up in a dry urist tube, with no food or booze, and no access to the surface or a single miner. In short, water falls, everyone dies.

i use rivers all the time, but i use a floodgate to seal it off once my supply starts getting filled and the well 2 z levels above the area designed to hold the water.

To quote myself.  :D

My Mayor went berserk from constant unhappyness, and after he molested some dwarves my legendary Swordsdwarf arrives.
The combat looked something like this.

The Swordsdwarf strikes the Mayor in the right lower arm with his *Iron Short Sword*, and the severed part flies off in an arc.
The Swordsdwarf strikes the Mayor in the left upper arm with his *Iron Short Sword*, and the severed part sails off in an arc.
The Swordsdwarf strikes the Mayor in the right leg with his *Iron Short Sword*, and the severed part sails off in an arc.
The Swordsdwarf stabs the Mayor in the lower body  with his *Iron Short Sword*, tearing the guts.
The Swordsdwarf strikes the Mayor in the left leg arm with his *Iron Short Sword*, and the severed part sails off in an arc.

The Mayor retches.
The Mayor bites the Swordsdwarf in the head, through the *Bronze Helm*.
The Mayor latches on firmly.
The Mayor shakes the Swordsdwarf around by the head, and the severed part sails of in an arc.

that's pretty impressive, shame it's not a screenshot as screenshots seem more realistic, not saying it didn't happen though but dang, thats a lot of limbs to lose.

Reminiscent of quest for the holy grail Black Knight sketch, but the black knight winning like he should! Now what would be totally badass is if the mayor survived... or stands up.

Setting the surface on fire isn't very repeatable, for one, and not aimable at all. Minecart Shotguns are both.

clearly not read boatmurdered. They did it ~3 times a year on some peoples turns :P

I usually start at the latest of 50, so good to know why i dont have towers everywhere, guess i need a new embark :P

abuse slayrace. Pretty sure it only kills stuff on the screen rather than "the entire race".

so slayrace FIREBIRD should work quite niftily. Although i've never tried it on adventure mode, only fortress mode.

Good luck with this, i'd love to see the world even a short distance in, but it's going to take a lot of effort.

If I am remembering the right creature, when I was skimming thru the raws, this was the one you milked the males for the extract?  Important because most people keep few males with autobutcher.

if this is the case i'm worried where this "dew" is coming from and what the female is doing?!

I decided to make an account and poor art. Czech out my MSPaint skills.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My adventurer.

THE BLACK LINES ARE GRASS

you killed random villages by cutting their heads off? did they get angry?

178
Edit: This is with fortress defense mode ON. I have also noticed a large amount of towns are abandoned (possibly been killed by sieges?)

Got a bit of a problem.
Lack of human settlements.

This means trading is difficult and generally if i play, i want to be a dwarf, so that in the 1% situation i survive, i might 1 day meet myself playing fortress mode as a migrant.

Do other towns trade? i've yet to see any which do.
The other point in lack of human settlements, is that due to not being able to talk to the many other random settlements out there (i doubt linguistic ability lets you talk to them does it?!) i cannot receive quests to go and hunt bandits or whatever.

Also, even if you choose a different race, you cannot speak with your own race.

For example, i just gaveup an adventurer, partly cos i just lost a leg to a crocodile (lol) but before i went i found a nice trading town for frogmen.
So i decided heck, lets choose a frogman then so i can recruit some.

Cannot speak to them. Amusingly though, my legless axedwarf adventurer had taken over one of the shops (WTF?!) whom i could speak to (as a frogman) and buy cloth off of!

For the purposes of adventure mode, we kinda need all races to have human/dwarfish talking, so that i can interact with them, or make it at least so that if i choose a different race, i can understand the same race but not humans/dwarves.

So the bug with fort born animals not growing to full size also hits dwarves? Though this got fixed in a binary thing that is in the LNP.
Nope, I have lots of native born adult dwarves. You'll get the message Urist McChild has grown to become a peasant (even if they have skills they'll always be peasants when they grow up, it'll update a bit later)

I am fairly sure it has NOW been fixed, just watch your DFHACK. every season or so you get a message "Fixed X units so that their size will grow/thicken".
I presume this is working correctly.

I've been more impressed with moleweasels than the frilly lizards. Always some vermin catchers, once embarked without them and basically lost my entire food supply very quickly. Couldn't find a way to keep em out.

I generally bring 2x warriors which immediately train on embark (i.e build a weapon rack and they begin). So no animals are required for that purpose, also, why use crap animals when you can get hilarious animals from the elves and request stuff from the drow? i usually buy whatever's going.

I never ever shear, but i usually let me fort run around with tattered clothing usually, i very rarely can be arsed with clothesmaking. Sometimes keep some egg layers, i like birds :P
