Masterwork DF / Re: What's happening in your Fort.
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:19:59 am »
but licking another completely random animal i found amusing as heck.

sadly the game was really confused by changing to adventurer mode, i change into another dwarf after sleeping whom had a broken leg and sucked with a crutch (recently broken, so no time to increase crutch skill)
Those ambushes in the announcements were still there, so i kinda got my head bashed in by a tigerman macelord (3 of them + war elephant)

I'll give it another try some other time, i want to run around with my 110 kill swordsdwarf for a bit :P

Decided i need a few more random dwarf cities to litter the countryside, so making a few colourful fortresses to leave with dwarves in (changing to adventure mode leaves all dwarves in the same city from fortress mode, they will rarely leave).

Might make running around the countryside a little safer with some havens to run to

I just used changemode to change my fortress to an adventurer, done it a few times before with weird responses.

This time i got lucky.

Shame i didn't get one of the guys with a named weapon, but an adamantine short sword will do i'm sure. Plus fully geared out in steel :D

Rofl, in my options of people to talk to it had "Uzol - Deity", sadly, speaking to him caused the game to crash, hilarious all the same.

Loaded it back up, wandered around in my fort, in my "animal room" this happened.

(note, the other announcements were from fortress modes, this was my first adventurer announcement).

dwarf on masterwork mod.
So not really sure why it isn't going up :(

I just checked MW's dwarf raws, and dwarves have both [SWIMS_LEARNED] and [SWIMS_INNATE], oddly enough.

well, at least we know why it's not going up!

thanks! :)

how do you level up swimming? i jumped in the river it said i was "swimming" but no it doesn't level up?!

You only gain swimming experience for moving around in water. 1xp for every "step" you take in water; just floating in one spot won't raise it, even if you use the wait key. At least, from what I have observed anyways.

I dont even get the 1 xp from moving around :/
Just shows as 0/700, will not rise. I've gone from one side to the other through the river (not one of those fords where u can just run across, one where you have to "jump in" use alt + move.
Are you playing a race with [swims_innate]? Because those can't raise their Swimmer skill, like Mermen for example.

The only animals I seem to encounter are raptors. Regular raptors and very rarely dragon raptors.

There is rarely anything else in the surface and silly woodland critters like rabbits and stuff appear to be completely gone so its pretty hard to get meat when you aren't strong enough to murder entire packs of raptors or patient enough to chuck salt pebbles until they die.

I have some but not ridiculously enormous amounts. quite fun knocking cranes out the sky by throwing stuff at them (found 3 of them in a short space of time), 3 sets of raptors (fled from), 2-3 bunches of foul blendecs, 2x sets of cheetahs, and various snakes.

Bit confused why my dwarf starts in some form of weird race's area. Trying to find some equipment.

Must admit though, i haven't tried much of adventure mode.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Multicultural fortress
« on: August 11, 2013, 12:27:08 pm »
Option 1. "Alliance" creature with various different creatures as its castes

Result: creatures will coexist and happily intermarry and interbreed. Dwarves will give birth to kobolds as noted above. Also they will all bleed "allied" blood and share some other things that can't be defined at the caste level.

Option 2. Being of a race is a contagious disease: When a creature arrives in your fort, after 1000 phases, have it randomize into a race with cumulative body transformation probability. Make races then spread their race instantaneously, which is a permanent body transformation into that race (and this must be set to only affect creatures you intend to transform). Since you can't transform the already transformed...

Results: Genuinely different creatures living together. When a creature has a baby, it will make it be permanently of its own race (but it should be already). Intermarriages will still exist due to migrants being married before arrival randomization and who even knows what will happen then. Your screen is flooded with transformation messages when migrants are randomized to a race. Your creatures cannot become werecreatures.

No non-buggy/hackish way to do it, unfortunately. It's something I'd like to do, too!

How difficult would this be to set up?

Would be a fun/interesting succession game with people having a year each.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

After my last 2-3 hunters had "incidents" involving various enemies, i required some more, so i chucked therapist and selected the best 2 which had nothing better to do.
Then realized one of them had a baby and on her first trek had it stolen. I was expecting the mother to be distraught and go crazy...
instead she didn't give a sh*t, no bad thoughts or anything, i checked therapist, all dwarves are happy if not ecstatic, wtf!?
I give her a year before she gets a new baby, i swear this fort is like that, it's like when anyone dies "bah, we'll get a new one". There's about 4 families in here, dont think anyones excluded in those 4. Seeing i get a death or two each year to wandering around on the surface i think my entire fort is "doesn't care about much any more"

Been going 5-6 years now, just got some fun animals to try (masterwork version, drow spiders faedogs and such). Got most of the fortress defense invaders enabled, so not doing too badly seeing i have 0 fort defense other than military (excluding the fact i've built a wall around it)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Babby's First (Second) Ambush

Goblins also tend to be rather weak, especially individually. I send groups of 3-5 untrained, unarmed, unarmored migrants in to go kill the dudes, and they either get caught and die, or end up with skull-in-the-brain syndromes.

I would disagree about untrained ones. A group of 10 bow goblins will seriously make a mess of untrained unarmored (and most likely armored ones also) dwarves.
Personally i just train 2 ultra godly ones and kill massive sieges with it :P

A simple way to ensure you're good to go early on. Is of your starting 7, put 2 of them as military of the same type (hammer/sword i generally find the best). so proficient in weapon skill, (i also add +5 dodger to one and +5 striker to the other, as they level slowly without some points thrown in). At embark add copper weapons, if you can afford it, iron short swords/silver war hammers (silver is good for war hammer but bad for swords, iron is good for both but silver is better for hammers)

In a year you have 2 legendary dwarves whom will generally slaughter everything. Adding some metal armor helps also. To give you an idea, just these 2 will take out a 40 strong goblin siege without much trouble (also fun to watch!) if given the time to train (spar)

Do NOT add more dwarves to their squad. You're best off with 7x 2 man squads than 7x 10 man squads. Once they hit legendary no reason why not to chuck em all together.
There is something about setting training for 5 sets of 2x dwarves in one military squad, but i've tried to and it is no where near as effective as putting a new squad for each pair of dwarves.

use therapist to find the ones best for military a 60% dwarf for a weapon skill will hit legendary with a similar training partner in roughly 2 years.

Masterwork DF / Re: [DWARF] - Bug reports and known issues.

Not sure if mentioned or wtf is going on.

My hunters keep spamming "Hunting cancels hunt: could not find path" i removed 2 others from hunting to lower the spam a little. It's still literally 1 every second coming up.

Currently got centaurs on the surface, so perhaps not hunting those but i've no more animals on the map?
so perhaps it's trying to hunt something in the caverns and i've revealed very very little of the caverns, so would make sense in that respect, cos it doesn't know the path to the enemy in the caverns.

edit:
Was correct in my guess that he wanted to hunt something in the caverns, not smart seeing he committed suicide by attacking a bunch of giant bats.
So solved (he died therefore no spam of announcements lol)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I found a cavern filled with water
« on: August 03, 2013, 07:32:00 am »
As far as goals go, I just want build a large and wealthy fortress. Also, I lied when i said it was the whole cavern, but everything except the bottom z level that's filled with water is empty space and walls. And, as far as I can see, It's all water. Almost like an aquifer, but i turned aquifers off.

Caverns can get water from outside source ( the hollows off to the sides of embarks ), or have ponds of water in it.

If it's in the way, cave in something from above :D

You can remove water via cave in?!

Getting this on masterwork DF will be amazing. My processor dies from normal DF too quickly.

Seriously looking forward to antmen mining into my fort and making a mess which allows other random stuff in.

Kitten claws a goblin off the map. Sadly the goblin survived so the cat didn't get a name or kill to it's name.
i must say also, that was one fast kitty. Anyone ever compared the speed of cats? they can change as much as dwarves it seems.

Still was hilarious watching this kitten chase the thief off the map though.
