Once you expose a tile to the sun, in any way, you can then build 100 floors of solid granite wall over it and it will behave as if its in the center of a sunny meadow.  This lets you build an aboveground castle, highly insulated from goblinite threats.

While give\take commands make workshops specific, I have not seen any evidence that one can actually control loading of stonefall traps...

You can also collect fat from animals, then convert that to soap.

You can then build your fortress walls out of soap.

Magma reduces need for charcoal. So does coal.

I just wish I Could find coal around.  Seems to be nowhere.  I've taken to dropping an exploratory shaft in the first year to pierce the magma sea and hopefully as few caverns on the way as possible.

I will only support beams if creative methods of weaponization are found, giving dwarves the reality of beam weaponry.

1.  Heavy shields hurt more when you get bashed in the face with them.  Crap soldiers have a harder time lugging them though.

2. I give as much as I can in the hope they'll bring fancier stuff.  Especially the damnable elves.  I want exotic animals.  They seem to bring more every year.  I buy all the cloth, because it takes me forever to get my own industry going...the clothes always rot off long before.

3.  I look forward to reading others answers.

I don't believe in ghosts either, but that doesn't mean I don't think they're awesome.  Especially when the show up out of nowhere and hack someones leg off, and then he has to hobble around on a crutch for the rest of his life.

Dwarves like to be buried, and they get so pissed when they aren't, they're coming back to getcha.

I haven't gotten into Adv mode yet, but I think ghosts there opens up a whole new class of fetch quest.  Purify tomb, etcetera, and so on, and so forth.

Just as an aside, I like to split off all steel production.  Big room, 4 stockpiles, no bins, magma shelters in the middle.  Quadrants of iron, flux, fuel, pig.  Finished steel goes to magma forges. Nearby.  One can then see at a glance how stocks look and whether or not it's time to melt a bunch or ore.
